Hello everyone!

I've been hard at work on Sacred vol.2 and while answering my cousins questions about screen tone i thought "WOW!! i'd love to do a tutorial on that!!" so here it is! :3

this is a little over view of the BASICS of using tone / adhesive tone/ comic tone/ manga tone etc. (it goes by a TON of names XD ) like it states in the tutorial, some things might seem like common sense BUT you'd be surprised how long it takes for one to learn these lessons LOL trial and error, messing up, and finding tone scraps on your pets are JUST a few of the issues! ROFL

i hope you'll enjoy this guys!! HAVE FUUUN!! and feel free to ask questions!!

You're welcome! I thought I found one before, because they cut out the screentone, then suddenly, I got trolled, because they scanned it and moved it over the image. Another one I saw was one with packages of screentone that they scanned into the computer, and I'm like, SRSLY?!

So yes, it is so much appreciated you did this! Keep it up!

Where do you buy your tone and toning supplies?

SiSero In reply to Zetsubou-no-Girl [2012-03-17 17:00:27 +0000 UTC]

I buy all of my tone from the official Deleter Tone site --> [link]
Deleter is one of the leading manufacturers of tone in Japan!

And I buy my manga supplies from a shop called Akadot:

I hope this helps!

Thank you! ^^
I was leaning toward those sites-- I actually get my paper from Akadot too.
The shipping on tone isn't too bad is it?
Anyway, thanks again.

I tried once to work with screen tones... It was a really hard work, but I had fun... with your tut, I wanna get them out of my 'temporary not in use' corner.

That's really awesome though I can't really buy any of the materials needed right now, I'd like to try this method one day. I just started a comic that I want to use screen tones with just for fun (and to learn how to use them) so this will be useful in the future! For now I will have to just use digital though.

i'm so happy you enjoyed learning something new! ; U ; this is SUCH a beautiful and fun medium! traditional toning is still the standard from mangaka in Japan and most of Asia (and even Europe!) i think digital has become the norm here in the states LOL

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NovaWoProduce In reply to SiSero [2011-04-27 19:58:36 +0000 UTC]

mhm! i think that's pretty much why it's kind of the first time i've seen some one do it the original way!
Since you know how to do it the original way, do you also know how to do it the digital way ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiSero In reply to NovaWoProduce [2011-04-27 23:26:27 +0000 UTC]

that must be it XD they teach it in some colleges but, that's pretty much it, i'm afraid
i can work pretty fluently with most digital mediums, but i choose not to use them i'm absolutely in love with the processes demanded by traditional mediums > U < it's so much fun, i love the smell of the inks and paints, the feel of a brush on canvas and simply being able to hold my piece when it's done ; U ; it's good to be well rounded, i feel

HellWingz In reply to ??? [2011-01-09 15:38:04 +0000 UTC]

hey i was wondering, if i wanted to publish a work professionally would i have yo go through all of this
im talking about plastic layer tones
wouldnt it be easier to just photoshop the tones
it just that all the cutting seems like it would take forever just to finish one page

i mean, there has to be a reason for why mangakas do it this way
is it cus it looks more proffessional? is it because this is the way it suppose to be done? or what?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiSero In reply to HellWingz [2011-01-11 06:36:53 +0000 UTC]

this is the "real" way of toning a page: the historically tradional way artists toned their work. in Japan mangaka like Kaori Yuki (Godchild), Kazua Minekura(saiyuki)and Takeshi Obata(Death Note) all tone with traditional adhesive tone in my personal opinion it does look better but beyond that, as an artist i've always favored traditional mediums. i like to hold my work and know that it's physically existing, you know what i mean?

also, this is NOT a lot of work (i can ink and tone an entire page in about an hour ). i know too many artists who complain about traditional tone, but they're also more accustomed to working digitally o __ o;; i know an artist who enjoys making her own oil paint FROM SCRATCH and also stretches her own canvas that's a true traditional artist XD LOL loving the process and doing all they can to own everything in their artwork :3 art is NEVER easy and something as demanding as creating a manga, or any publication for that matter, is time consuming and demands discipline and patience that's derived from a true passion for the art-form. when you love doing something, you'll only want the best for your work and not look for any shortcuts. but of course if you're concerned with how hard this process looks, that's understandable. digital might be for you and many other ppl. but just understand that as an artist one should be looking for challenges every once in a while and not be afraid enjoy a little challenge now and again to allow your abilities to develop i hope this makes sense

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HellWingz In reply to SiSero [2011-01-11 17:48:26 +0000 UTC]

wow
your totally right and i completely agree with you

its just that in the last 2 years i've noticed that my vision has gotten worse and worse
and i was even beginning to think i was gonna go blind in a few years
so because of that, ive been trying to find the fastest way to publish my work, you know, before its too late
i figured it beats not publishing anything at all

but i recently realized that my art isnt as good i thought it was
well, its not at the professional level i would want it to be

so now i decided to take 2 years to work on improving my art, before actually attempting to work on my actual manga
so hopefully i get to improve some and not go blind

after reading your reply i feel like you really are a true artist
a very knowledgeable one too
thanks so much for your words of wisdom

This is SO helpful!
I bought screen tone last year but when I tried to use it I failed...I was using a dull xacto blade and trying to scrape with it
Thus I was wondering where you bought your tone cutter? What company is it?
I see some on the internet but I don't know what kind is best....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SiSero In reply to Sun-kiss [2010-12-16 14:11:41 +0000 UTC]

i'm so glad you thnk so, hun!

oh yes...a dull blade will do it to you
the cutter? i recommend you used an Xacto knife for cutting. their blades are easier to come by AND they cut smoother and with less friction to answer your question, i bought the tone cutter (the one i used for highlights etc. ) at an online store called Akadot.com

I hope this helps you!

they're pretty rare in the USA too (belieeeve me!) i buy almost all of my supplies online o __ o one of the good things about the site i buy tone from is that they give you free shipping after you buy a certain amount i've never tried cg toning before actually (i'm so old-school when it comes to art XD i like doing it all by hand o 3 o )
