Hello everyone!
I've been hard at work on Sacred vol.2 and while answering my cousins questions about screen tone i thought "WOW!! i'd love to do a tutorial on that!!" so here it is! :3
this is a little over view of the BASICS of using tone / adhesive tone/ comic tone/ manga tone etc. (it goes by a TON of names XD ) like it states in the tutorial, some things might seem like common sense BUT you'd be surprised how long it takes for one to learn these lessons LOL trial and error, messing up, and finding tone scraps on your pets are JUST a few of the issues! ROFL
i hope you'll enjoy this guys!! HAVE FUUUN!! and feel free to ask questions!!

get-backers-fan In reply to ??? [2010-11-17 23:11:52 +0000 UTC]
is it possible to rub them without a rubber?
with a coin or a guitar pick for example
π: 0 β©: 1
SiSero In reply to get-backers-fan [2010-11-17 23:21:39 +0000 UTC]
oh my lord, NO! o A o you'll run the risk of destroying the design on the tone even if you rub too hard you might cause the design to heat up and smudge. this doesn't ALWAYS happen, but some designs or more fragile/have thinner lines than others so you need to rub the tone the way they were made to be rubbed down. i hope this helped you, hun

I use letraset screentone, and I've been rubbing softly with a guitar pick (a thin guitar pick, but not so thin); you know, as if I'm using a brush or something
it works pretty fine o.o
it sure helped me
thank you so much!! <3

SiSero In reply to get-backers-fan [2011-01-17 19:01:03 +0000 UTC]
letraset screen tones are harder to scrape when it comes to making effects, so this makes sense i'm glad it's working for you, but i wouldn't recommend it at all
i work VERY fast with the appropriate tools and i can imagine using a guitar pic is more time consuming and may not get the tone as secured to the page
and securing large pieces might be a pain @ A @ (i'm just imagining, doesn't mean i'm right lol )
aaaw i'm so happy this tutorial was helpful!
please take care and have fun with your tone! i'm sure your pages look awesome! :3 <333

Ugh... I've TRIED using screentone *keyword: TRIED*, but I fail miserably at it! T^T It's really time-consuming to cut the screentone and getting to stick is even more difficult! DX
You're very talented at it, though! I wish I could have your screentone skills! For now, I'll just stick to pencil/pen shading...

That's so cool! (The tutorial and the manga!)
I was just curious as to what you used to color the front and back cover, was it paint, watercolor, marker, digital?
and can you tell me any good screen tone books (a book filled with tones to use) or websites that sell the books or single sheets? That are preferably cheap. PLEASE! haha
I ask because my friend and I want to make a one shot manga, and I don't know these things! I wish I could ask you all of my questions about it, but I feel like it'd just be a barrage! hahaha
This tutorial was so helpful! Before I read it, I never thought I could use tones without digitally doing them because it felt like it'd be so difficult! You make it sound so simple!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

This was really a good tutorial! Don't think I'll ever use screentone, but still...
I read an explanation on how to use it in a magazine once, but I didn't get a thing... Now everything seems totally clear and even easy, though I BET it isn't :3
Anyways, great explained, and btw, I love your works!

omg!! this is too much!! with digital toning existing in the world.. traditional toning looks like it can take a week or so just to finish a page..
π: 0 β©: 1
SiSero In reply to Lewnett [2010-06-19 17:24:08 +0000 UTC]
well hun, most digital artists feel as you do XD but keep in mind that actual mangaka like CLAMP and Takeshi Obata of Death Note ONLY use traditional tone and inking techniques Japan and many countries on that side of the world are all about traditional tone
i'm one who loves to paint, draw, ink etc. traditionally. it's beautiful, hands on, and extremely fun!
LOL but just to answer your question, as an American Mangaka who needs to meet her deadlines LOL i can finish up to 6 pages a day
π: 0 β©: 1
Lewnett In reply to SiSero [2010-06-19 17:26:58 +0000 UTC]
wow.. nice ^^ i love the atmosphere of a full day infront of the paper.. but it gets tiresome after sometimes i guess.
Keep it up.. it's ppl like me that's not gonna improve anything with a lazy attitude
