Hello everyone!
I've been hard at work on Sacred vol.2 and while answering my cousins questions about screen tone i thought "WOW!! i'd love to do a tutorial on that!!" so here it is! :3
this is a little over view of the BASICS of using tone / adhesive tone/ comic tone/ manga tone etc. (it goes by a TON of names XD ) like it states in the tutorial, some things might seem like common sense BUT you'd be surprised how long it takes for one to learn these lessons LOL trial and error, messing up, and finding tone scraps on your pets are JUST a few of the issues! ROFL
i hope you'll enjoy this guys!! HAVE FUUUN!! and feel free to ask questions!!

I only tone digitally right now
but I assume art school will ask me to tone on actual pictures so I'm going to fave this for future use and have it ready for linking to people who ask for a good toning tutorial

Oh god this helps SOO much, I just bought myself a pack of tones. Thanks for this!
But, I have a question, how fast do you say a sheet runs out? And where do you get your tones, because I get mine at akadot and they're...pricy. =n=

SiSero In reply to Yu-Xin [2010-06-17 18:03:30 +0000 UTC]
OMG!! i'm so happy this was so helpful to you, hun! it was my pleasure! ^///^
oh sure! a sheet can run out in one shot OR after a few months it all depends on how much you use at a time or how large a space you're toning is
that's why i say to save your scraps in the tutorial! it really saves money, and you'd be surprised how much you can do with a tiny piece of tone XD i buy from Akadot too! i also buy from a Japanese company called Deleter-->[link] there is also a brand called Letraset that's not as expensive, and there are junior tones that are smaller BUY allow you to purchase more designs at a time and save money :3
i hope this helps you, hun!

Ahh, wow, you are really helpful! ;A;
I never even knew there was an english online Deleter shop- and the prices are lower, too. Thanks so much! Would you recommend buying the junior tones if I were making a one-shot shoujo (30~ or so pages)? D:
I'm so sorry for bombarding you with questions, ;n; I know you're probably busy!

SiSero In reply to Yu-Xin [2010-06-19 03:24:15 +0000 UTC]
i'm so glad i was able to help!
LOL don't worry about asking me questions! if any of us have the answers we should offer them to each other! <3 that's how we learn ;D so no worries, okay?
hmmm for a 30 page manga i say buy juniors for the designs (like hearts and plaid) but try to buy 2-3 sheets of the regular "dot tone" preferably SE-36 or SE-40 you wont need as much of the designs ones BUT you'll find yourself using lots of the grey scale one because it's so versatile XD it's great for shading, for hair, for items, EVERYTHING!!
good luck hun!!

Desopilar In reply to ??? [2010-06-13 22:38:22 +0000 UTC]
That is SO cool! I never knew that there were such things. I thought that the artists just manually did those designs with ink. Silly me lol.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to Desopilar [2010-06-16 16:45:44 +0000 UTC]
oh yes! it's a veeery old technique that's been around for decades! LOL many of that is done by hand, but for a clean consistent look screen tone is best
doing designs by hand gives the art work a different feel (and depending on whether you want that different feel or not is something else) and also, for mangaka who have a deadline to fulfill, they cant afford to do all the designs by hand
so tone saves time too <3

I never knew that this Manga Shadings were made like this!
What a lot of work! Now I do not longer wonder that some artists need so long for doing one Manga book.
I thank you for explaining that!

oh yes! it's a very old technique! one that's been around for decades!
absolutely! this and that fact that they have over 200 pages of artwork to draw and ink XD it's a challenge and needs a lot of discipline, but it's so much fun!
it was my pleasure, my dear! thank you so much for enjoying this tutorial!

You are extremely ambitious to do old school toning. I watch to watch an art group in Japan do stuff like this, but as I have a huge fear of cutting myself I do any toning (which is next to none currently) on the computer, however, I want to thank you for doing a tut like this. It's very informative.

OMG thank you for thinking so i'm always about being true to the art and doing it traditionally, so it only made sense for me to want to do it the way mangaka in Japan still do it; using traditional screen tone
i wana try digital one day just for the experience :3 LOL are you?!! XD i'm in LOOOVE with the Xacto knife!! o U o which...my sound kinda creepy!! ROFL its such a fun process!
i'm so happy you enjoyed it, sweety! thank you so MUCH!!

isnt there a way to do this digitally
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to third-day-risen [2010-06-15 03:55:52 +0000 UTC]
LOL of course there is, but in Japan they predominantly use screen tone famouc mangak like CLAMP and Takeshi obata of Death Note use ONLY traditional tone
i'm one who wants to do things as true to the mangaka as possible and i want to do everything traditionally
i personally prefer the look of traditional tone over digital tone
digital tone looks a bit cheap to me at times o _ o;;

That looks like a lot of work!! How long does it take to tone a whole page when you're working on Sacred?
You just made making manga look like even more work. I can't believe you finish a whole volume so quickly!
Thanks for the helpful tutorial
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to OmiOhMy [2010-06-15 03:53:29 +0000 UTC]
LOL it's only a lot of work at first! for volume 1 it took me 30 days to do 30-40 pages, now it takes me 11 days to do 30-40 pages
practice practice practice!
i usually do 4-5 pages a day, but the more detailed, dramatic pages take more time
LOL like i always say: when you love doing something it doesn't feel like work and you forget how much time you're putting into it :3 it's so much fun! but it's important to not have unrealistic expectations whe doing a manga, you know? i know i'm able to do 4-5 pages so i push for that, but once i'm done, i'm DONE! XD i dont' push for any more LOL
it was my pleasure, sweety! thank you so so MUCH for enjoying it!

ah..isn't it so tedious to do all this for every panel? xD
I wish they had like....something where you could place a screentone on using a computer...(If they do, well...im slow)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to 0OnlyInYourDreams0 [2010-06-12 17:41:50 +0000 UTC]
not at all it's all about what do you like to do when it comes to your art? i'm very hands on and i thrive off of a challenge, so this is a breeze to me. i also look at my characters as my babies LOL so toning them is a very loving process for me XD i must sound so nutty! ROFL but it's true!
some might find traditional toning tedious but it's not difficult to do
oh yes! there are a tone of programs that allow you to digitally apply tone to your pages, but it's still a process everythign is a process basically XD that's one of the extreeemly fun things about art!!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've checked out books that included how to use and apply screen tone but they were barely clear and lacked photos to show you how to do it. I have manga manuscript paper, a4 for practice, but no screen tone because the store I went to stopped selling them because of lack of sale from it ;A;. Still have to find where to get some tho. Still, thank you!

you're VERY welcome my dear! i know what you mean! i have a couple of those books, and they helped me when it came to buying materials but the actual process of applying tone was VERY unclear
so i'm so happy that this was able to help you!
aww maaan!!! that's so annoying! darn lack of sales = A = this is where i get my screen tone! it's from a Japanese company called Delter :3 i hope this helps you!-->[link]
good luck and have fun!!
