Hello everyone!
I've been hard at work on Sacred vol.2 and while answering my cousins questions about screen tone i thought "WOW!! i'd love to do a tutorial on that!!" so here it is! :3
this is a little over view of the BASICS of using tone / adhesive tone/ comic tone/ manga tone etc. (it goes by a TON of names XD ) like it states in the tutorial, some things might seem like common sense BUT you'd be surprised how long it takes for one to learn these lessons LOL trial and error, messing up, and finding tone scraps on your pets are JUST a few of the issues! ROFL
i hope you'll enjoy this guys!! HAVE FUUUN!! and feel free to ask questions!!

Shit.... this looks hard. If i ever make a manga, maybe i'll just use digital screentones... I KNOW, it's kinda like betraying the art of handcrafted manga, but wel, maybe i'll just have to learn this. XD

LOL it only looks hard but it's very easy and straight forward it only takes some getting used to (when it comes to maneuvering the blade XD ) it's once you want to start layering tone that it gets a liiiittle confusing XD which ever you chose i'm sure your comic will look great!
good luck to you, hun!

becoming a professional artist is just my little silly dream... But i'm sure i'll be able to learn it, if i ever decide to follow that silly dream XD

As a starting comic book artist this is very helpful to read! I read other tutorials but this one is easier to follow~~ Though screen tone still scares me..... -_- I probably will only use it when it's absolutely necessary, lol XP Thank you for sharing this dear, you're so kind! ^^

my goodness, i'm so happy to know i was able to make something that was helpful to you! oh no1 don't be afraid!!
it's a very fun and easy medium to use! just take it slow and plan out your cuts :3 example, if you look above at the tutorial you'll see that the excess tone i'm peeling off from his face is one large piece! i did this for two reasons: 1.) to be able to use that excess tone to shade something else on the page/it wouldn't be as useful f it was cut up into 100 pieces XD and 2.)to prevent his face from being scraped by the blade, leaving behind lines
just be patient with yourself, take it slow, remember to rely on your crosshatching skills even when you're using tone to shade, and save your scraps! remember that you'll be fine! good luck with your comic!!

Gosh, thank you so much for explaining it so well to me You really are a sweety~ I'm definitely going to try it, though I'm not really a patient person I want stuff to work out in one go XD Ah, I'll see how it goes when I order them ^^
Thank you~!!! Can't wait to order Sacred 2 btw~~!! The first volume really was an inspiration to me~ It's one of those manga's that I go through whenever I feel like I can't do my own stuff anymore and I'm stuck somewhere (by now it's comletely worn by me going through it and rereading it all the time, lol
)

wow! so very usefull!!! wish I had proper manga-drawing papers and treditional screentones...but on the day I have them I'll use this tutorial! so thank you very much!
but I have a question- how do you shade with screentones?

OMG! thank you so much for thinking so, my dear! i'm s glad! ; U ;
[link] and [link] are my fave places to get my manga supplies from! i hope they help!
and about your question, how to shade with screen tone? that's what this tutorial is showing, sweety! XD if you look above, i've cut the tone to form the shading :3 so sorry for the confusion!

GNneko In reply to SiSero [2010-06-12 16:34:20 +0000 UTC]
wow! those are some useful webs! thank you!!
and my question...well. I guess I was unclear. I meant to ask how do you shade A screentone. I mean, you already have a screentone, and you want to add a shade to it...like with clothes and such..
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to GNneko [2010-06-12 16:50:55 +0000 UTC]
i'm so glad! you're very welcome, sweety! ^ U ^
oooh!! you're asking about patterns! oh yes! they have tone with patterns printed right on them! all you do is cut and stick and your characters clothing have a detailed design on them!
tone comes with all SORTS of designs, such as flowers for background (to make it all romantic), hearts, plaid, and even polka dots! <3 i hope this helps, sweety!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GNneko In reply to SiSero [2010-06-12 17:01:17 +0000 UTC]
well it does help, but that's not what I asked ^^''
I mean shading. you know, like you have a shirt that you used screenotone on, and now you want to shade the "colored" shirt.
I'm sorry for all the trouble I cause to you...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to GNneko [2010-06-12 17:18:21 +0000 UTC]
oh no, not to worry! i want to help!
now you're talking about SHADOWS, right? shading? but you said ...like you have a shirt that you used screen tone on, and now you want to shade the "colored" shirt... colored shirt? screen tone is primarily used for black and white illustrations so i'm not sure if you should exactly use it to shade an entire shirt you could always do it (some ppl add tone designs on back grounds of pieces so it's totally possible! i've even done that LOL ) and if this is what you were asking me, then all you'd have to do is follow the same directions in this tutorial
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GNneko In reply to SiSero [2010-06-12 22:25:45 +0000 UTC]
yes yes shadows! that's what I'm talking about~
and when I said "colored" I meant the black and white.. just meant to say that the shirt already have screentones.
and the shadows... I mea like you did to your character sleeves on the tutorial, the darker places... you just use another screentone?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to GNneko [2010-06-15 04:15:30 +0000 UTC]
yeah, that's exactly what i did! <3 i used a different screen tone for his sleeves :3 what i used for the sleeves isn't what i used for the skin (the one on the skin is a lighter tone)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GNneko In reply to SiSero [2010-06-15 07:24:49 +0000 UTC]
no no, I mean.. the shade on the sleeves, like, there's a part on the sleeve which is darker then another part of the sleeve...which creates shade. how did you do that? ^^''
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to GNneko [2010-06-15 07:55:17 +0000 UTC]
LOL i just told you how i did that XD it's different tone :3
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GNneko In reply to SiSero [2010-06-15 09:19:37 +0000 UTC]
umm....but you said..."i used a different screen tone for his sleeves :3 what i used for the sleeves isn't what i used for the skin (the one on the skin is a lighter tone)"
I ment...on the sleeve itself, with no connection to the skin, there's the base color and darker areas, which are the shadow of the sleeve. so how did you make them?...
once again, I'm very sorry for all the trouble I cause..
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to GNneko [2010-06-15 15:17:25 +0000 UTC]
yes, and that's why the sleeves are darker than the tone i used for his skin and the darkest areas below the darker tone i used for the sleeves is done with markers <3 don't apologize! XD it's sort of hard to understand what ppl are asking me sometimes ; __ ; darn typing!! LOL
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
GNneko In reply to SiSero [2010-06-15 15:57:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh gawd, that is one very good tutorial! I really like to do everything traditionally rather then digitally, but since there are no tools for traditional screen toning to be found and bought ANYWHERE in my town (this type of art isn't really used or popular in my country) I have to do it digitally...
But nevertheless, it was soooo much fun to see how you do it! You make screen toning look so easy!

LOL not at all! screen tone has been used among comic artists for DECADES! it's still primarily used by professional mangaka in Japan
it's the new generation that's all about digital
LOL
it was my pleasure, my dear!

OgawaBurukku In reply to ??? [2010-06-12 07:32:02 +0000 UTC]
Oh weird... I had no idea you used actual tone for your books. And how weird that you use the art knife to shave! I use the box cutter for that, since I want to keep my art knife tips nice and sharp.
Nice to see more people are starting to use screen tone
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SiSero In reply to OgawaBurukku [2010-06-12 15:56:58 +0000 UTC]
oh yes! i have photos of my work space with my tone and pages up! :3 SO FUN ARE THEY!! XDD LOL that's actually not a weird technique at ALL, sweety! how else do you thin mangaka get that shine effect on the hair of their characters? any "How To Use Tone" book will tell you the tone cutter is to be used and can be used to scrape shine into your pieces
but because the sharpness doesn't last as long when you use it to also cut tone, i use an Xacto knife which is super sharp!
oh yes! i hope more ppl will start using it! the older generation, such as CLAMP and Takeshi Obata, still tone traditionally but the new generation is very digital right now i hope this lovely art is never lost! ; _ ;
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
OgawaBurukku In reply to SiSero [2010-06-13 00:51:17 +0000 UTC]
Ah, I don't use "how to" books, I learned how to cut tone and stuff from a school for mangaka and from assisting professional mangaka I use the box cutter for hair highlights and pretty much any other scratching effects, but I guess whatever works for you, right? I personally just prefer using the box cutter because I want my knife to be good and sharp. And that's how I was taught to use it and how I use it on the job, etc.
Xacto knife is the same as a box cutter, right? I'm forgetting English XD
Well, the shuukan manga is still mostly done traditionally, but you're right that a lot of mangaka are going digital. I've only seen two or three manga where I couldn't tell it was digital, though. Mostly it's either gekkan manga or yonkoma manga that's digital. I guess it's more green to do it digitally though, so maybe I should switch over someday.

luckily in Japan traditional tone is still used primarily among the mangaka! that's including CLAMP and Takeshi Obata, the artist behind Death Note! so at least i know screen tone is still alive and kicking!

like, if you see in my tutorial when i'm pulling the tone off of the characters face it's in one big piece? make sure to do things like that so that your pic isn't covered in blade lines XD i hope this tutorial will be useful to you and help you when you're ready to conquer that tone you have!

XD i haven't bought any new tone for over a year and i did an entire 224 page manga! some ppl use ink washes and paint (which i'm doing for other stories ) there really is no one way of doing it, which i think is so beautiful!
screen tone is just one of the many ways of shading comics that have been around for decades
