Description An ominous presence loomed over Alderaan, an evil unimaginable, unparalleled, and completely devoid of mercy or sympathy, with but a simple gesture one man sentenced an entire planet to death, some two billion lives extinguished in an instant... I'll never forget that feeling, the sudden rush of emotion as I sensed the terror, even half a galaxy away, each and every scream hit me, their pain and anguish ringing in my ears, tearing at my heart, I think I collapsed after that... I remember Isabelle shaking me, I couldn't hear her, or anything... Isabelle... It wouldn't be for another hour or so before we heard the news, and she... She was Alderaanian... What I felt, even that couldn't come close to the anguish she would feel, moments before she was talking with her little sister, Maya, who was looking up at the night sky, unaware of the malice hiding between the stars... Quinn Shara's memoirs, Rebel Alliance years, remembering the moment the Death Star annihilated Alderaan, and the consequences it would have for her and her friends...
-------

Wa'hhh... I don't know how some people can so easily kill off innocent characters left right and center, for me this is so stressful! ;_;

Ahem! Anyway, more Star Wars OC AU stuff, this time exploring another supporting character, Isabelle Devon, and her kid sister Maya Devon... *cries* The events in this page correspond with the scene in Star Wars: IV A New Hope, when Wilhuff Tarkin orders the Death Star to fire upon Alderaan, this runs parallel... Whilst Leia is having her back and fourth with Tarkin, Isabelle and Maya share a warm family conversation. As the Death Star fires it's malignant superlaser, Quinn feels a sense of dread so strong it freezes her on the spot. And as Obi Wan feels the pain of Alderaan, so does Quinn, however unlike the experienced Jedi Master, Quinn is unable to comprehend this feeling, nor contain the overwhelming flood of sorrow...

Quinn's force sensitivity is exceptionally strong, at times like this though, it's like a curse...

I want to try to expand the stories of all the characters in my AU, even those who, y'know... Die. Because I firmly believe that it's the Characters who make the story, and not the other way around.

I want to expand this little mini comic also, just a couple of pages, exploring Orchid's reaction, as she also sensed it, also maybe Orchid and Maya being long-distance friends, as when Izzy's talking with Maya Quinn and Orchid are often around, I feel that that might me a very sad but strong story, where Orchid experiences losing a friend for the first time...
I also want to create some tension between Izzy and Quinn, as Izzy lashes out in grief...
I can't tell weather I'll do it soon, or at a later date, hence the question mark... XD

By the way, I must apologize for my dreadful handwriting, I have dyspraxia, so it's really hard to make my writing readable, hope it ain't too bad...

Ga'hh, Maya has a pink Wookie plush toy... I want her to live so badly, damn you to hell Tarkin... (Although I guess I'm just as bad...) ;_;

Anyway, I nattered on long enough, hope ya'll like, please lemme know what ya think. ;_;

Okay, seriously. This is just too much, who said you could do this to my emotions?!
You really nailed the expressions on this. They really work with the scenario, and convey far more emotion than text ever could.

Also, why is your handwriting nicer than mine, you can actually read what you wrote, unlike when I write things!

I can feel the anger flowing through you, take your Jedi weapon, I am unarmed, strike me down with all of your hatred and your journey towards the Dark Side will be complete!
It only gets worse in part 2: fav.me/d880e2b ... ;w;
Ah, thank you, I really appreciate it, they say a picture speaks a thousand words, and I'm really glad that's the case here. ;w; Isabelle isn't aware at that moment, but that's the instant she loses everything, damn you Tarkin... ;_;

Eheh, I find that really hard to believe, my writing is awful! XD

NOOOO, STILL SO SAD, also, I didn't know there was part two, let alone that one was it.

Yeah, I must admit, I am quite envious of your art skills honestly. You have a talent for faces and eyes that I can't even dream of!
When I first saw that scene around the time I was nine, it didn't really hit me that there would have been millions of people living on that planet when it was destroyed... now it gives me chills.

Heh, if I could, I'd send you a picture of mine... 'Tis far worse!

heheh, I really like Maya, but whilst there'll be plenty more of this Star Wars artwork, I fear there wont be much of Maya... ;_;
It's sad because I do find her adorable... ;A;

The feels...

I was listening to music while going through my deviations and while looking at this I was listening to:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jjLMm…

It was sadly appropriate and I could sense Quinn's despair....

I have no idea how people can kill off characters seemingly easily either tbh, I never have it in me to do it at all, it seems.

But gosh I love this page. So much emotion. Took a few reads to understand that the first two panels weren't a flashback tho. Also your handwriting is totally legible!

I know, it really killed me to write this, but it's a major plot point which serves to drive a wedge between Quinn and Isabelle, this subplot'll only get sadder... ;_;

Thank you Tori, I'm really glad. Eheh, yeah, it does look like that, I think for flashback panels I'm gonna give the panels thicker, coloured borders. Eheheh, you're far too kind, I really hate my handwriting...

;_; I know what you mean, I'm working on a follow up with Orchid, so uh... More feels incoming...

Still, it's good to establish character motivations, this here's an introduction to Isabelle, who's Quinn's captain pre-Hoth.

I want to create some tension between Izzy and Quinn, like, this tragedy has a traumatic effect on Izzy, and changes her motivations, rather than acting on duty, she now acts on hatred, and that puts her at odds with Quinn, who worries for Izzy's morality... That story ark is resolved during the battle of Hoth.......

Oh this sounds both tragic and promising which is always an interesting combination.

Once again by the way, you are able to capture the raw emotive qualities of your characters in your artwork and that emotion is very easily seen in the gestures and expressions of your characters.

I almost wonder if perhaps Isabelle would blame General Rieekan (commander of Echo Base on Hoth) in some way since he was on Delaya when Alderaan was destroyed and delayed sending evacuation ships for fear of provoking the Empire.

Heheheh, as much as I want to give all my characters a carefree life, tragedy is just so much more engaging...

Ah, you're far too kind, often I worry that my style isn't really defined enough, like, if my art was submitted in a manga group it just wouldn't stand out.

That's certainly an interesting idea, I know that in the aftermath of Yavin, whilst the Alliance is celebrating it's most significant victory yet, Isabelle is angry, because she feels the loss of her home is of far greater significance... In the battles that follow she argues for a more aggressive approach, Quinn dislikes this as she feels that Isabelle is putting her own personal feelings ahead of the lives of her men, and the two friends become distant as they're constantly arguing... However during the battle of Hoth Isabelle proves Quinn wrong when she saves Quinn from a falling AT-AT, moments prior Quinn had been thrown off her Tauntaun, Isabelle grabs Quinn off the ground and pushes her to safety, however she herself is consequently crushed by the falling war machine... The battle of Hoth is probably one of the most traumatic battles for Quinn... It's also shrapnel from the falling walker that gives her the scar on her right cheek, a scar she chooses to keep as a reminder of Isabelle's sacrifice.

SlingBlade87 In reply to SithPostsArt [2014-11-30 02:01:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I can certainly understand that...it doesn't help that we're writing in the midst of various wars and conflicts either!

Honestly I think if you submitted it in a manga group it would stand out as unlike most manga styles you actually go into great detail (even when you do it in monochrome) with your backgrounds which is smoething most manga artists neglect or simply do not do. Add to that the fact that you do not use the generic (except in your joke panels) emotive expressions for your characters but again go into more depth your style does indeed stand out from most manga based styles.

Jeez, Isabelle must hate the Alliance leadership as the war goes on. I mean they aren't exactly being docile but after the initial elation from the victory at Yavin wears off and the fleet is scattered they really tone down the offensives. I can imagine that would be very frustrating to her. I can certainly see how her desire for blood would clash with Quinn though. For all her fighting prowess she's certainly not a murderer (something that Aira-ty for example is despite her innately good nature). And crap, that is one hell of a way to go, especially after being so estranged from her one time friend for so long!

Indeed... XD

Eheh, I guess the thing that I see that differentiates most is that I don't ever ink my pencil lines, I prefer not to because I like the roughness, the sketchiness, and the variance of soft and smooth that you can get with pencils, where as ink lines are just solid... Though actual drawing style wise I just worry that it's not really unique... Maybe I'm overthinking, I dunno. I do try to avoid those cliche's, aside from the joke panels of course, cuz' they can get a bit grating, and I read a metric ton of manga...

She certainly finds it frustrating, particularly after the Alliance tones down it's offensives, she urges for strikes against the Empire, but her plans are always sidelined, she also feels a fair bit of jealousy towards Quinn as time goes on, with Quinn's growing Jedi powers she's a more effective operative, Isabelle often having to coordinate Rebel forces from a base whilst Quinn is out in the action... Though of course Quinn see's this for the best as she can feel Isabelle's anger, and whilst Quinn has definitely killed before, she's always done it purely as a soldier or pilot fulfilling their duty, never out of hatred. As time progresses their relationship does get rather frosty, during meetings their opinions clash a lot, however they do try to remain civil (though it doesn't always work out), as Quinn can understand Izzy's anger... And as time goes on Izzy herself starts to see that maybe she's misguided, however this is right before the Empire invades Hoth, Izzy doesn't have the chance to really talk it out with Quinn, and rekindle their friendship (because shortly before the battle of Hoth Quinn has to rescue Nox, who's relapsed, and overdosed whilst on patrol...), so going into the battle Quinn still thinks that Izzy is misguided, it's only after Isabelle pushes Quinn to safety that Quinn realizes that Isabelle still cared... It's certainly one of the most tragic story arks I've got for Quinn and the gang, and it leads into Quinn's final Jedi Trial, the Trial of Spirit, in which she's tormented by her thoughts towards Isabelle, among other things...

I really do agree that your style has a very nice feel to it. That is part of what draws me to it I think...but no, drawing style wise it is unique. I mean you can certainly see the manga influence in it but the coloring and styling are unique.

Quinn and Isabelle's relationship really is tragic but very powerful...I can see how it plays a real part in Quinn's development though and I think that ultimately it sounds as though Isabelle made the choice of her own volition...it's a horrible thing that happens, but ultimately it is a selfless act that in a way redeems all the hatred and hostility she was showing those around her.

Ahw, thanks, I really appreciate it, I'm really glad that you enjoy my style, and overall I am quite comfortable with it, and I do enjoy it. ^_^

It's definitely a plotline I've grown fond of, I love these tragedies, though I do often get depressed over em' too, I can get really invested sometimes... Quinn's death is going to destroy me...
Aye, I plan to have another scene after the Battle of Hoth, when Quinn finally makes it back to the fleet, right after this: Returning home.  Where Quinn finally has time to contemplate the events that took place, I think it'll be one of those rare times when we'll see some tears from Quinn herself... Yeah, I definitely think that also, and perhaps, had the Imperial Navy arrived a few days later Quinn and Isabelle might've made the first steps to repairing their fractured friendship, at the very least, even if the outcome was the same neither side would've departed thinking the other resented them... Indeed, it's not only Jedi who can redeem themselves, and I think that lesson also sticks with Quinn, that even those who've no Force Sensitivity can do amazing things, Isabelle saved Quinn, when Quinn herself could do nothing, for that reason she feels great distaste to Force users who believe themselves superior to the average person.

I think rayn44 said it best when she says that both you and she aren't just artists but also storytellers when it come sto your art which is part of what sets you apart.

Yeah you and Rayn both seem to love your tragedies and traumas I must say!

...yeah I've killed a few characters of my own that I'd grown very fond of and attached to and it's always...interesting.

That scene you have in mind sounds interesting though, and very powerful. I don't think we've seen Quinn cry tet in any of your pieces.

I apologize for the feels! ;w; It was really sad to write, I felt so mean, but I want to put a human face on my character's grief, in the film Alderaan was just a place, you never see the people, so there's not an emotional connection to what's been lost, here I wanted something more, so show a victim and give a face to the atrocity. I'm really glad you like it! ;w;

I'm putting together a follow up, where Isabelle lashes out in grief... Wa'hhh, feelings why... ;_;
