Description
I ♥ my cube!So I made it into a box! Unfortunately I didn't specifically work off a pattern/template - I kind of DIY-ed it.
I constructed a cardboard box - making the widths of the four sides a millimeter smaller than the template. This is so that the lid would fit on top with ease.
... Honestly, I don't really remember how I did it - it really was a spur-of-the-moment kind of thing that I made up on the fly!
This is what it looks like with the lid on: [link]

Hi there! I made a Companion Cube too, took me a week... guess it's good enough for a 13 year old. XD I didn't do the lid thing though since I thought the interior of a Companion Cube should be concealed. Check out my profile!

A companion cube is a prop found in the game Portal. I highly recommend the game - it's amazing.

Gonna try this. I wonder how one would reinforce the corners so they are nice and durable.

That's why it's called a "storage cube" - in this case, both storage and companion! GR8 idea! I downloaded both versions (storage and companion) but got totally dazed looking at it - is there building instructions anywhere?? (I CAN find out how to, but would take forever)

There is no building instructions, I had to wing it, but it's pretty straight forward ... except for those darn strips! No-one can figure out what to do with the stupid things, and this has been an ongoing topic of conversation on many papercraft forums.
What I did was to cut off the tabs on the strips and glue them directly onto the face of the cube - still looks pretty cool

Figured out how the pink strips work. The original original model was a hat and it was quite a bit bigger so that would make the strips much easier. It does require cutting 2 or 3 mm into the 4 face segments and then folding the tabs down. The tabs on the strips fold up and glue under the tiny tabs on the face.
I had to measure them all because the natural spot is hard to see. And lots of careful scoring lines. It creates a pretty wicked effect.

You can download the template I used here: [link] , but be aware, the template is for a CUBE only. I had to improvise quite a bit to build a box version.

I loved this cube so much, and I am so sad that it is was "euthanised" when it was accidentally squashed.
I really need to build it again. *sigh*

Yeah, some of those tabs are pretty tiny, the key is really good glue - I seriously cannot emphasize that enough - it will make any papercraft project 100-times easier to make if the glue you have is a strong, fast-setting glue.
I would recommend Power Pritt Gel.

Any time!
If you are having trouble finding it, try your local scrap-book store. After all, they specialize in all things paper, so if you cannot find Pritt, they will most definitely have a suitable alternative.

Good luck with that!
This one was actually my third attempt. It was completed after 2 failed prototypes before it, and it took me a couple of weeks of sporadical papercrafting to finish.
Suffice to say that I don't intend on attempting to build another WCC for a long, long time. But I wish you all the very best.
If I were to do it all over again, I would have photoshoped the top corners on the base, to make them the dark grey, and extended the pink line all the way to the top - just for aesthetics.
