Description I'm really quite proud of this model - it took me so long to complete, since it was the second attempt, the prototype failed dismally

It's a 5" Weighted Companion Cube that I made with a twist, but you have to check out the next photo [link]

Here is a link to the pattern if you're interested:

Epic model!
How to you put each square (where you stick the button and the pinkstrips) together. It seems that there are too many tabs.

Hahaha! Thanks.

It was a fun model to make and apart from those pesky pink strips, relatively easy to make.

Those pink strips were/are the bane of my life - I never figured out how they glue onto the model, it never made sense to me and I consider myself a relatively experienced papercrafter.Ā

Here's a video tutorial that may help you build it:Ā www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlK7vZ…

Cool!

I don't mean the pink strips (I watched the video) I mean the the squares that you make the cube out of.

They just ... fit together! You'll have to actually try assemble it to see how the pieces connect.

amazingly well done! I'm really impressed by this one. I've tried it (ok, like 3 years ago) and thought it was one of the worst papercrafts I've ever done. but man, this is well done!

Thank you I'm very happy with the way this one turned out.

I really love this model. I've built it a bunch of times, and I even tried to upscale it to a life-size model, but it turned out to be an overly expensive exercise - printing. I still might do it: I'd love to have a 1:1 version sitting in my house ... one day

minidelirium In reply to Skele-kitty [2012-12-22 13:16:07 +0000 UTC]

as you should be! you made me wanna try building it again. I'm hopefully better at it than I was the last time around.

me too! I'd love to have a life size companion cube and I've actually wondered why noone has made a model of that yet. if you do do it in the future it would be awesome to build it for myself, so please make the files avaliable if you make the necessary adjustments?

(also, I really love seeing such perfect papercrafts as yours! you are an awesome builder!)

Im going to have a go at making one of these tommorow. I hope it turns out well. Do you have any tips?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Skele-kitty In reply to myjamjar [2012-06-02 04:28:10 +0000 UTC]

Yes.

As you may have read from the previous commentary, this project was very much a case of trial an error for me. But I found that if you correctly calculated the size of the inner space of the cube, and created a cardboard structural framework (an inner box) for the cube, it'll las a lot longer.

I would also recommend using paper stock that was at least 200gsm, and really REALLY good glue - I recommend tacky craft glue.

Also, read the comments regarding the pink strips, because this will become an issue for you as you construct it. I ended up using glow in the dark pink paper and that looked pretty cool.

I think, if I knew a little bit about electronics, I would have engineered those pink strips to be clear pink plastic and made the cube into a lamp. Now THAT would have been super cool!

myjamjar In reply to Skele-kitty [2012-06-02 09:11:37 +0000 UTC]

That would be awesome! Anyway i have a cardboard cube thats just the right size so im going to build on that.

futarilus [2012-05-13 12:30:29 +0000 UTC]

Hey awesome model

although im normally not the guy who tinkers stuff,
but i wanted to surprise my girlfriend, so i gave it a try.

i'm rly upset because i didnt manage it... i first hat my problems with the circular paper that lifted the paper with the heart on it
and after trying to begin with the edges i couldnt find out how to stick those 3 parts properly..

damn it, im stupid

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Skele-kitty In reply to futarilus [2012-05-13 21:59:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, this one is a has been known to be problematic.
With the heart button pieces:
- first you glue the two sides together so that they form a circle
- then you bend down the flaps on the narrower side to form a surface to attach the heart-face to.
- once you have glued the heart-face down to the sides, you should have a button.
- fold the flaps down on the other edge of the sides and glue firmly to the face of your WCC

You're not stupid, you just need to practice a little more - this is by no means a beginner model.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

SteampunkTinkerer In reply to Skele-kitty [2012-12-13 04:55:39 +0000 UTC]

What I did with this is:
-I glued the two sides together and made a circle
-bent the flaps on the LONGER side, and glued it to the block face first
-Then I put the heart on

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Skele-kitty In reply to SteampunkTinkerer [2012-12-14 08:06:17 +0000 UTC]

AirashiiKyoushu [2011-08-06 00:00:56 +0000 UTC]

Do you have any instructions that particularly come with it?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Skele-kitty In reply to AirashiiKyoushu [2011-08-08 03:41:02 +0000 UTC]

Ah, no, sadly. It took me a long time (and paper and ink) to figure this baby out. Basically, start with the background, then do the heart circle, and work your way out to the corners and edges. I was never able to figure out how to do with the pink strips, so I cut out the tabs and glued them under (and then on top of, in later cubes) the 4 flat sections, but someone figured out, recently, that the pink strips are missing their tabs, so you have to add them yourself!

Thank you! That's a nice complement.

Good luck with the construction - it's a little fiddly - I recommend reading all the comments on this page and the linked page.

I used 500gsm cardstock for the primary cube structure, and then 150gsm paper for the outside stuff

Thank you! I am actually in the process of redesigning the WCC to a half-size model - that is half the ACTUAL size in "real-life" at 50cm. I have no idea where I am going to store this massive cube ... but who cares!
