Description

EDIT:: You can now see anΒ animated version on tumblr!!

Every image is roughly 15 minutes of work. Sometimes I missed the timer and let it go long, and there might have been some undocumented work between the steps. Okay, okay, so there's nothing consistent here but I tried.

---

I've been wanting to put up something that shows my process for a while now. As you can see "process" for me is synonymous with aimless wandering.

In all seriousness, this is how a lot of my stuff starts out, a vague tonal drawing with some sketchy lines over top, suggesting a pose that I think is interesting, and then I go from there, blocking in colors and hopefully establishing a sense of atmosphere as quickly as I can.

This is a strange one too because I started this back in October and got a couple hours in before letting it go, and then when I came back earlier this week I forgot where I was, and was mostly just turned off by how dull the color was, so that's why there's a sudden saturation jump.

This is a pretty weak tutorial from an educational standpoint, but hopefull you get something out of it! I want to do the tutorial sort of thing moreso on Justin.tv, because I feel like it's more interactive.

Painter 12.

6-8 hours.

I like to print my work out because I just bought a big fancy Epson printer that can print 11x17 images, so I like to work at higher resolutions. Usually my images start out at around 3300x1400 px at 150dpi because I like that aspect ratio, if I like how things are going, before I get to far in I'll push up the resolution to 300dpi for printing and change the size. The full size of this image is 5100x3300 at 300dpi so I can get a big print without losing detail.

While I appreciate your putting up the steps here, let me second the request that you do a video tutorial. I love how the process shots here go through the roof from #2 to #3... you could just as well title that "then apply talent." I want to see it happen.

Where is your work being published? I do hope it's everywhere and I haven't seen it. It reminds me so much of the Playboy illustrations of my youth, Vargas and his acolytes. You should totally be considered in that coterie.

Plus, I want that "Dr. No" poster.

That's definitely fair. I'm hoping to do a justin.tv stream this weekend! I really like being able to work and respond to questions as I go and explain what I'm thinking about, making it more of a demo than a tutorial, but I can see the value in explaining things in video tutorial form. I guess I'll have to get on the youtubes. I appreciate your thoughts in this regard, it's really valuable.

My work isn't published in too many places right now, but I want to change that. I have a full time job in video games which keeps me busy, and so I really just have some occasional editorial work. I'll definitely share any work I have that shows up in cool places! The Vargas comparison is wonderful, you pay me a high compliment. It's definitely an aspiration of mine to be able to do work like that for Playboy or any publication some day.

Also, yes. Me too. So badly. I'm glad you noticed.

I hope this is the first of many streams. And not just because I won't be around this weekend to watch this one.

Definitely! It will actually be the second, but the first was a couple weeks back and I haven't found a good night to do it consistently yet. I'd like to make it more regular.

Actually, I don't really feel like I'm learning much from process pictures like these. I think it would be simpler and much more educative to watch a recording of you working instead. You should try it!

sketcheth In reply to Slipmaskin [2013-12-13 16:31:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for saying that. Similarly, I don't feel like I get that much out of written tutorials either because they oversimplify things, which is why I didn't try for any text here. I'll definitely try some video tutorials in the future, in the mean time I'm going to become more active on myΒ Justin.tv channel , so please take a look there in the future!

It can be a lot of fun to see things in the abstract first and then work a character into it. You should definitely try it.
