Description
EDIT:: You can now see anΒ animated version on tumblr!!
Every image is roughly 15 minutes of work. Sometimes I missed the timer and let it go long, and there might have been some undocumented work between the steps. Okay, okay, so there's nothing consistent here but I tried.
---
I've been wanting to put up something that shows my process for a while now. As you can see "process" for me is synonymous with aimless wandering.
In all seriousness, this is how a lot of my stuff starts out, a vague tonal drawing with some sketchy lines over top, suggesting a pose that I think is interesting, and then I go from there, blocking in colors and hopefully establishing a sense of atmosphere as quickly as I can.
This is a strange one too because I started this back in October and got a couple hours in before letting it go, and then when I came back earlier this week I forgot where I was, and was mostly just turned off by how dull the color was, so that's why there's a sudden saturation jump.
This is a pretty weak tutorial from an educational standpoint, but hopefull you get something out of it! I want to do the tutorial sort of thing moreso on Justin.tv, because I feel like it's more interactive.
Painter 12.
6-8 hours.

Wow... I just have one question. How much often do you change the layer? Do you have some rules like " sketchlines ", " bodyparts" or things like that?
Thks anyway!

Very nice pic! Sweet to see the progress, it is very inspirering. Only critique i can give is that adding light reflection from the gameboy to her face/torso is missing and leaves the impression that power has been turned off.
Any way nice work. Looks really natural and coasy.

You know, that's a totally fair critique. I think it does kind of break the narrative a little bit. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I appreciate it

No worries, i guess thats why we publish our work, except for the fact that others appreciate it. Any way, i will probably take a look at this next time i blow the dust of my Cintiq

Yep, exactly. Getting a response, critical and not is the only real reason to share your work and I always relish the critical feedback. But yeah, especially if you've got a cintiq GO MAKE STUFF!

I'm such a slow replier.. Any way! i tried something I've never tried before. I've always drawn stuff in black'n white, then made the layer 'luminosity' and added colour behind it. It woks great for outside environments were you generally only have one light source and then some bouncing light.. but in inside environments it just doesn't cut it. So, with inspiration from your drawing, a lot of other tutorials and some knowledge about colours and light bounce ect. i drew directly in colour, and.. im surprisingly happy about the result! So.. there should come some pictures on the page within this following month.
So.. I WENT MADE STUFF! (i know.. horrible grammar in that last sentence, but it had to resemble yours)

damn it. my current project is a 3 page comic.. page 1 is done, and with a relativly good flow, then i start on page 2.. and i've redrawn the first pic 3 times now. its funny how you make a whole page with relativly ease, and then when you have to start on page two you just cant get it right.

An assortment of custom made brushes in Painter12. Most of them are based off of the charcoal brushes in one way or another, though. I'm planning on releasing a pack of my favorite brushes in the future so stay tuned!

Great progression ! For the line, you do a special layer, and you hide it later, or, you paint over ?
And again, nice work
π: 0 β©: 1
sketcheth In reply to Loup-sauvage [2013-12-17 18:00:39 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, with these I usually have the sketch drawn right on the base canvas layer and I just start painting directly over it. If I want to try something that might be a bad idea, I'll try it on a separate layer and then flatten it later. I like to keep the sketch on the canvas though, because then I can't get rid of it, and it reminds me to keep moving around the painting to cover up all the areas I haven't touched yet.Β
