Thank you! Yes, I did it by myself. Most CalArts films are done by one student, unless they ask others to help.

Adored it! Your animal designs really are some of the strongest I've seen from a young animator! It's uncanny.

Nicely done. I have to ask, was the gray scale for the animation a requirement or in a way a nod to the movie based off the book that was originally in black and white (the movie that is... well I guess the book too since it was typed in black and mostly on white paper ^_^)?

sketchinthoughts In reply to Quachir [2010-05-04 02:46:02 +0000 UTC]
Thanks! The black and white is actually a requirement- freshmen films aren't allowed color, not until our second year.

Quachir In reply to sketchinthoughts [2010-05-04 21:45:39 +0000 UTC]
Is that to give you more of a reason to pay attention to lighting and shadowing effects on a character? Either way it looks great in the gray scale, once again great job!
Have you heard how you did on this yet?

I think it may be just a time thing to be honest. Since most freshmen(including myself) didn't have quite an accurate idea of how long it takes to complete a film, it's encouraged that we stay in black and white so that we don't need to worry about colors. There were still quite a few first years who colored their film, and some of those that made it into the Producer's Show were colored. I think it's more of a guideline than a rule, just so that we finish and get an idea of how long it takes.
As far as I know we don't get graded on our films- we just get credit if we complete it. The biggest honor you can receive would be to make it into the Producer's Show.

very impressive. I actually just finished my freshman animation as well (not at CalArts, at Loyola Marymount) and it is not near as detailed as that. good job!

it's really great actually. freshman year, we just do a traditional animation, using pencil/paper. but next semester we use computers and work in groups. I really love it.
I actually applied to CalArts, but ended up not attending (obviously, haha). What's it like?

sketchinthoughts In reply to marbri [2010-05-04 21:02:00 +0000 UTC]
Very nice! It's good to learn to work in groups, sometimes I feel like CalArts could definitely focus some attention on that area.
It's been one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. There are so many amazing artists here and we all just feed off each other in terms of enthusiasm and inspiration for animation. That, along with the encouragement from teachers and further inspiration from visiting artists, has probably made this year the most life-changing I've ever experienced.
