Description
Her back had been itching for quite some time, only getting worse after that instance with Effie. Matcha had been forced to put her concerns about growing up to the side for an instance, focusing more on the sheer intensity of her body shifting and growing. It was hardly a comfortable experience, and she found herself fidgeting and shifting in a desperate attempt to settle her firing nerves.
Leutogi, her moomy, checked on her every single day. She reassured the growing girl that this type of discomfort was common with the growing process, and that it was made worse by the rapidity with which she was growing. “On the bright side,” Moomy said, rubbing Matcha’s back, “It means it will be over and done with quickly. You’ve already gotten a head taller I think.”
“What about my magic gland?” Matcha asked, pawing at her chest where she still believed her new magic gland would sprout, “It hasn’t come in yet, and my tongue feels all fizzy.”
Leutogi gave her a careful check, but she already had an inkling as to what was going on. She stooped to give Matcha a gentle nuzzle against her cheek. “Don’t fret about that right now. You are perfectly healthy, there isn’t anything to worry about. You will be just perfect when you come out the other side of this. Try and rest instead of letting your mind race, alright?”
Matcha wasn’t convinced and Leutogi knew it. Still, Matcha, ever the rule-follower, laid her head back down with an affirmative noise. Leutogi gave her a blanket and instructed the other stumps to leave her be so she could recover.
She hoped the girl wouldn’t have to recover for much longer.
-----------------------
A few days later, Matcha awoke to the sounds of soft chirping flitting through the window of the room Leutogi had lent her. Sunshine left soft dapples across her flank, now much bigger than it had been a week ago. A pile of blankets of varying sizes were stacked unceremoniously in the corner, and an uneven kick sent the woolen cover laying on top of her into the pile alongside them.
Matcha lifted a huge paw up to rub her eye. She could feel the beginning of fur along her leg, coating her paw in a velvety fuzz that felt unfamiliar to her fluffy face. That too would finish growing in relatively soon, if Leutogi was to be trusted. Matcha hadn’t looked at herself in quite a while, so she wasn’t too sure how close the fur was to ‘done’.
Her paw dropped to her empty chest, and her heart along with it.
Where was her magic gland? The one that was meant to give her the ability to protect everyone, just like her Moomy. Matcha shook her head. Even if it wasn’t on her chest, as she had been so certain it would be, perhaps it would be on her paws? She did feel something new and squishy developing there.
A glance at the underside of her paw revealed something more akin to raised skin. Definitely not the black of a magic gland.
Now thoroughly concerned, Matcha heaved herself to her paws. Fortunately, her gait was similar to the one of her youth, which meant that she did not have to relearn how to walk like some of her other housemates had had to. Still, her larger size made things awkward as she stepped over to the large mirror.
Her face, somewhat familiar and somewhat not, stared back at her. The horn on her nose was much shorter and duller, her hair was longer, not long enough to distinguish it entirely from her head like some staxies had. Her legs were fluffier, and her tail was wider and harder to wave. Her magic gland was nowhere to be seen. Not her chest, not her eyes, not her paws, not her tail, not her cheeks.
No. No, no, no.
Trembling, Matcha turned her back to the mirror, sitting down and screwing her eyes shut. When she opened them, she told herself, her back would be clear and green, just like it had always been. There would be no glands on her back. There couldn’t be.
She opened her eyes and her heart sunk even lower.
Staring her smack in the face were six pitch black lumps decorating her back. The lumps that said that you could control minds and make staxies act like people they were not. The lumps that people whispered about. The lumps that children heard about in stories and feared.
The beginnings of tears pinpricked her eyes as the realization of the matter hit her. This was no mistake; the tongue that she saw when her jaw dropped was a fleshy pink. Those six black lumps were her burdens to carry for the rest of her life.
What if people were afraid of her? Her moomy, her old friends, many of which still small. The new children who would float in and out of the stump house, looking for a home and comfort and finding her instead?
Would she not be allowed to be a Moomy like this?
The thought is what brought those tears trickling down her face as Matcha began to gasp for tiny breaths. She couldn’t be a Moomy because everyone would be afraid of her. It would be cruel to the kids to even ask. Her desires didn’t matter one little bit if the kids wouldn’t want to be around her. She could never force anyone to like her.
Anxiety made her brain spiral further and further down to a space that was as black as her magic glands. Could she even still live at the stump house if she was so frightening? Would her friends even want to be around her? Would her Moomy still love her? Would her Moomy be disappointed in her?
Her Moomy found her half an hour later, curled up on the ground and sobbing into her paws, her magic glands on full display as she hides her face from the world.

Nobody expected the extistential crisis upgrade!
Also these aren't all of the adult upgrades I want to give Matcha, of course. Leaving her in an awkward teenage state seemed appropriate!
