Description
And now, peeps of all backgrounds, I mentioned a while ago that Verdi's backstory was getting revamped after the whole.... throwdown that led to Verdi leaving the overblown Rosmarin tribe and getting axed from the plot. Well, here is is. This is gonna go into the fan group because NPC, but this is all canon to Verdi's backstory. Lady here won't be showing up much if at all after this, but this is just to fill in the empty void that used to be Verdi's childhood. So here we go.Believe it or not, Verdigris used to be an incredibly bright child. Did well in school, polite to everyone, the perfect little boy. He was the prime candidate for adoption. Enter Delphine Brightmaur. She was a very well-off wyngro woman with no husband and therefore no heir. She went to the nook asking Alma for one of the more 'potential-filled' children. Alma wasn't initially comfortably with the manner in which she spoke, but before she could say more, in walks little Verdigris, about 8 at the time. He smiled politely at the lady and greeted her with a "Good afternoon ma'am! Are you inquiring about adopting a child? I do hope your search is successful, there are plenty of eager wynglings here!"
She adopted him in a heartbeat. He was practically already trained.
At first, Verdigris was elated. He had been given to the nook as an egg, so finally! A mother of his own! A family he could take pride in, share what he learned in class with! And this lady was so pretty, perhaps she'd teach him how to paint her face so?
Then the scoldings happened. Got a B instead of an A? He was supposed to be smarter than that. Expressed interest in her make-up and clothes? He was a little boy, he didn't want to grow up and be a drag queen did he? Spoke casually and without his polite demeanor? He was an embarrassment, not worth his mother's time. As hard as Verdigris tried to please his mother, the only thing that did was when he was absolutely perfect.
He grew to hate it.
He was caught one day with a pot of eye shadow he spent his allowance on, and his mother was far from pleased. The make-up was destroyed and he was struck across the cheek. "Why must you be such a disgrace?! I don't ask much of you. Bring home the grades I know you're capable of, and be polite. Grow into the young man that you are supposed to be! You shame me when I present you and you act so lowly. This estate will be yours, and if you damage my name in any which way, then I will not hesitate to lock you in with that nasty farm down the way. Do you understand me??
"But I don't want to lie to anyone, mother, especially not myself. And what harm does a little paint do? What's so bad about pointing out when somebody is being mean? You're being very mean right now."
Delphine was livid, dragging him by the ear and locking him overnight in the puckoo coop in her private farm. It was cold, wet, dirty, everything Verdigris hated. He screamed and cried for someone to let him out, that he was sorry, but the maids and farmers were instructed to leave him alone. He got sympathetic glances and even some jeers, but no help whatsoever. He was brought back inside the next morning.
Something inside the child broke that day. If she wouldn't accept him, then why bother trying?
His mother was having a dinner party that weekend, and Verdigris, as he was being dolled up by a maid, began to think. He stared at the maid, who had passed by him in the pen without much more than a sad glance and spoke. "You know, I know you try to make everything look nice, so it's a wonder how you haven't been able to fix the fact that your clothes are always dirty and that you cannot dust to save your life. I inhale the dust whenever I throw open the curtains. Puckoo face."
The maid looked a little shocked, as the child was usually quite warm. "Young master, that wasn't very nice."
Verdigris just shrugged, and the maid, uncomfortable, went on with her job.
Verdigris waited by his mother quietly as the other well-off guests began to arrive. They chattered and gossiped and made snide comments to one another about other gros that they had come across, some standing on one end of the parlor while the very object of their gossip stood on the other. Verdigris waited for a lull in the activity before tapping a spoon against his glass as his mother had instructed him. "I apologize for the interruption of your fine evening. However, I look out among this sea of gentleman and ladies, and I simply have to share my thoughts upon laying eyes upon all of you."
And then hell broke loose.
One lady was called a ferret dressed up in a ratty doll's skirt. A gentleman described as a money-hoarding pig not suitable for even the cheapest cut of bacon. Another accused of spitting so much venom when she spoke that she melted the lips of the poor saps who kissed the ground she walked on. Every single gro who arrived at the Brightmaur party that night received an insult, a tragically honest comment, a snide remark, or all of the above. People were livid and raising to hysterics at the rat child sputtering such nonsense. Especially Delphine. She ordered the waiters to drag Verdigris to his room, and the wyngling allowed it, a smirk on his face the whole way there.
He was returned to the nook the very next morning, Alma getting an earful for giving her a 'disgusting child'.
Alma could tell that he wasn't the same. He didn't cause any physical disturbance, nor did he do poorly with his lessons. But every compliment was coupled with a snide comment. That once bright smile turned into a snarky smirk. He didn't go near the potential parents, eventually aging out of the nook and leaving after landing a job at the Rattle's Rest, where he still works as an entertainer to this day. He was colder, snider, holier-than-thou.
Alma was no fool. As a child, it had been his defense mechanism. As an adult, it had helped him bridge the gap into who he really was. Confident. Intelligent. Witty. He found an incredible mate, had two glowing children who he treated with the utmost affection and love so they never grew up feeling the same way he did. He had been stifled as a child and now lived leaving no words unsaid, no interest unexplored, no regrets made. Except one.
He never got the opportunity to tell her off for all the horrible, disgusting things she did to him.
He doubts he'll ever get the chance.

So the sasshole was raised for a year by a major asshole, and went from sweet little angel to, y'know, Verdigris.

she thinks she looks like a sunset, verdi would adore telling her that she looks more like a baboon
and thank you! it's closer to the original story i came up with for him when i converted him out of the wyngro-verse, and it actually feels way better having his wyngro-self better match his elf-self lol
