Really anime is animation, the labeling is stupid. Before they changed the category to say "manga/anime" I submitted only to cartoon too. щ(ﾟДﾟщ) Why cant people understand a words real meaning?? I too would rather call it Manhwa if it has to be labeled by cultural style influences..

I don't even watch anime, I read comics. From many countries.. I cringe when people say my art is anime but I dont feel like fighting over semantics so often.

Anyway, I'm pressed to believe that the "Anime" category means something like "style that looks similar to what's mostly seen in Anime", aka large eyes and whatnot. It's pretty flawed logic actually, when you think about it...

Apparently anime on here in category is just anything that has to do with the show....? @@ ...or the style?.... Guess we can't really stop how people people right? People think one way, but not the other. When I was young I used to think Sailor Moon was a cartoon, didn't know it was an Anime.

Language is defined by usage more than anything. Since the majority of people who appreciate your art define it as having an anime aesthetic, it's only logical to file it under 'anime' regardless of the broader semantics of the term. Your own personal preferences don't really matter, because your work is going to be mentally categorized a certain way by your viewers whether you want it to or not. It's not about your intentions... it's about how you're perceived.
I know it sucks, but it's true. To use another example, people are always going to lump such diverse franchises as Star Wars, The Twilight Zone, Indiana Jones and Star Trek under the label "science fiction," regardless of what that label truly means.

It's beyond my control if people call my drawings "anime". Sometimes for the sake of convenience, it's appropriate. But so long as I'm categorizing my drawing myself, I will be sticking to the more neutral and more-encompassing "cartoon".

(Case in point word "yaoi", also). Well, what can y'do if a word gets a new meaning, as I think "anime" has. I think maybe "anime" has taken on a different English meaning despite its original Japanese meaning. I guess it means "cartoon works, animated or not, that resemble mainstream Japanese animation"? Sadly. Its a pretty lame word for that. Ganbare on your vocab battle!!

oh, btw I just looked up the etymology of "cartoon" ; 1670s, "a drawing on strong paper (used as a model for another work" from French carton, from Italian cartone "strong, heavy paper, pasteboard" thus "preliminary sketches made by artists on such paper". Extension to comical drawing in newspapers and magazines in 1843.
So under this etymologically strict view, digital drawings can't be cartoons, and perhaps if they're not comical, they also can't be cartoons? Word etymological evolution! : ) just an interesting point to think about. Guess you'd better stick to "digital drawings", lol.

You shouldn't get caught up by semantics.
The purpose of words, in the end, is communication. If I were to say to you that I draw Anime, you'd instantly have a general idea of what I mean simply by the context; That I attempt to draw images in the aesthetic style of popular japanese-made cartoons and comics. If I were to tell you I drew Manga, it'd be the same, but you might require a momentary clarification of if I actually draw comics, or if I'm simply using "Manga" in the same way I use "Anime".
Now, it's good to be able to have discussions about semantics, because often the meaning of words can be confusing. But in the end, knowing about etymology and the precise meaning of words is only useful in so far as it helps you communicate.
Your works could easily be classified as "Anime", regardless of if they're animated, or made in Japan, or even made by a Japanese person (to my knowledge, you're Korean. I could be wrong.) Nobody would come up to you and complain that your works were badly categorized if you put them in the anime section. In fact, most people would accuse you of mis-categorization for not labeling your works as anime.
You need to decide for yourself why you really don't want to label your works anime. Is it truly a protest against the colloquial meaning of anime? Or is it simply because there's a certain cultural group that you'd rather not be associated with?
I will say that, reading this, it had the same feel as reading translated Manga. I don't know what it was. Something about the wording or the use of grammar. Maybe it was intentional, maybe it wasn't. Just thought I'd comment on that.

To be fair, I didn't ask. I just stated my assumption and noted that it was an assumption. I doubt people mean much offense by it; They're usually just curious. If people ask you what country you're from, they probably know you're from some part of Asia, but they don't know WHICH part of Asia, and they don't want to make assumptions about which part of Asia because the stereotype is that some Asians get very offended if you assume they're from one part of Asia rather than the other. "What country are you from" is a conversation starter as much as anything else.
.. So, yeah.

I don't get what the fuss is about, but then I'm Australian, not American or Asian. Is it some.. big.. thing over there or something? When Americans ask about my nationality I just tell them. Most people don't know I'm a quarter Turkish, quarter Greek, half English Born-In-Australian, but if they assume I'm English or Australian I don't get pissed off at them. How would they know? And why should I be offended by people's curiosity?

It's more that I irritated that people keep asking me if I'm Chinese or Japanese. It's always "Are you Chinense or Japanese?"
oO Imagine if you were asked by almost everyone you meet for the first time if you were "Russian or something". Now put that together with a job where you meet hundreds of new people every day. I hope you can see how this can get wildly agitating as shit after a while.
What exactly is important here: That the person is pleased to meet me, or that the person must categorize everyone by their nationality (race) and make it clear and obvious to me that to them that I look like something they can't relate to to the point that have to question my identity?
After being asked the same question over and over and over... It's hard to say which.

I suppose it might get a tad irritating after a while. Eventually it'd probably just be "I get that a lot. I'm Australian, Half English".
As for the if/else statement, they may be trying to make conversation, or they may be curious, and honestly, maybe they ARE trying to categorize you. This isn't just a thing with you, humans do it constantly to everybody and everything all the time. We're slow-thinking pattern recognition machines. It's how we were built. It's in our nature to see people and try to fit them into holes, because most of the time those holes fit. And if they ever encounter a group that never fits into any known holes, they'll start categorizing that group as "not fitting into typical holes" and adapt accordingly. You shouldn't take this personally, because it's rarely personal.
We categorize for optimum outcome. If somebody asks you if you're Chinese or Japanese, it's probably because they don't know and they want to know. As for why they want to know.. maybe you really are a rare case where they can't tell and they're fascinated. Maybe they're just trying to make conversation and don't know that you're sensitive about it. Maybe both are true. Maybe they're trying to make conversation and they choose the most outstanding aspect.
Right now, in trying to understand your situation, I think to myself, "I remember the stereotypes of Asians that they're xenophobic towards each other". Then I think, based on your previous comments, that perhaps you moved around to different parts of Asia in your life and got treated nastily in some places because of your particular group. But I don't know. Nobody can ever know. Assumptions are made because the alternative, not making any assumptions at all, is usually pretty dangerous.
It's easy to say "I just wish people would treat me like a human", but nobody treats anybody "like a human". We treat different groups as we do depending on our upbringings. And if we see something different, we don't know how to act on it. So we ask. Even though it often rarely makes a difference. We try to learn and adapt.
As frustrating as it is, try not to begrudge people for human nature. It's terribly hard to avoid. They rarely mean ill by it.

Don't expect nerds to make sense. Anime and manga are terms that people adopted because they want to feel superior to people who read superhero comics and watch looney toons. It's unfortunate that DA moderators can enforce this stupidity on you, but I'd expect it to happen less now than it would formerly have.

I think it is because on this site its more american or english-speaking-oriented so when you draw moemoes or fanart of asian cartoons and comics they understand it as anime because that is the term they define it as?

I have a similar lulzy confusion when it comes to things that I've drawn or painted and then touched up in photoshop to enhance the work.
Am I trying to present the work in the way I feel is more authentic to the piece in its physical existence, or have I created something that is wholly new and non-existent to the original piece?
In fact, isn't photographing the work alone already taking away from the original intentions of an artwork that is created to exist physically?

What the heck? You should be able to categorize YOUR artwork any way you want! Personally I would just suck it up and categorize it as anime because it'd be worth it to get the DD at least. Regardless of what you say about it, other people will classify your art the way they see it so all this correcting of how you want your art to be viewed will be a never ending circle.... I mean there are artists who explain things right in the caption and there's always some idiot who comments and asks the exact question answered because they didn't bother to look -___-
