Description
Okay! This is kind of rough. Colored sketch, really, but it was an idea I wanted to get out there. A How to Train Your Dragon roller coaster! Why not? When you board, you can pick a night fury or a deadly nadder to ride. And then you're off, on a nice flight around a forest. Can't go upside-down, I don't think, but would be thrilling enough due to the open feel of the ride.
The ride design is based on the Pony Express ride at Knott's Berry Farm in California, and here is a photo: [link] and on this ride, there is a back pad that swings up and presses against the riders' backs so that they don't fall off the ride. On the dragon coaster, it would take the form of the dragons' tails (hinged somehow so they'd be down when loading but would move forward when the train was ready to depart).
Wanna take a ride?

Instead of a pad against the back, why not a mock harness, resembling what Hiccup wears? Something you lay in, another half lays ontop of you (hinged at the bottom - the seat, maybe), and the two halfs are trapped together and adjusted for the passenger.
If it doesn't appear to be as exciting as what the moving shows, not many people are gonna want to ride it.
This way, the ride can do anything!
Also, make the cars be farther apart for more of a wingspan. Perhaps even parallel tracks for more of a racing feel?

Haha, there'd be like two lines. A long one for the night furies and a little short one for the less charismatic ones.

I personally wouldn't have the dragons beside each other but its still a cool and great idea

it does make for kind of an awkward thing with the wings (the inside ones would be folded, not good for flight, that), but it makes it so that you can sit next to your friend and increases ride capacity. So I guess it's a tradeoff...could go either way. Another option would be more than one person per dragon and the riders would decide who gets to be big spoon and who gets to be little spoon. ^,^

OMG I would so ride that but don't make it go to high, so little kids can ride. Also you should have safety features like what kind of safety belt.

Yeah, it probably has some sort of safety belt, but I didn't draw that in because seat belts are no fun to draw.

that doesnt seem safe. if you sit IN the dragon, and it being a different dragon per-set.

Here's the ride I based it off of: Pony Express at Knotts Berry Farm, California: i1.ytimg.com/vi/bVS0uOb8yfA/ma... As you can see in the picture, it has more of a restraint system than I cared to draw for the dragon coaster, but that's due to laziness on my part, not ignorance of the amount of restraint needed. Sitting /in/ the dragon could be done, but I thought it would feel too much like Dumbo. Riding the dragons like motorcycles might feel more thrilling, especially since this ride design doesn't allow for most of what other roller coasters can do. The hills can't be very steep or very high, the corners can't be very banked, no inverted elements, etc.

Oooo, looks like fun!! Clever!!
I was thinking of a How to Train Your Dragon ride as well, but it would be all virtual, like Disneyland's Star Tours. This idea looks just as fun, if not more (and probably less expensive... )!!!

I've been saying that Universal Studios Orlando, Florida should do whatever they have to to get the right to How to Train Your Dragon and make a whole area for it in Islands of Adventure. If they did that, they could build a ride like this. That would be so awesome.

Someone needs to build this.
...In my backyard.
But, obsessive fantasy aside, this is a wonderful concept! I would go on that ride about a trillion times if it existed, believe me.

I would definitely ride this. As far as the upside down problem, a few straps on the arms and legs with a secure harness to the back might solve that problem.

Because of how passengers would have to perch on the dragons, I don't think it would be a very intense ride. But it'd be super fun, especially at night.
