**PLEASE READ**Pattern pieces: Read the instructions in their descriptions!
Part 1: [link]
Part 2: [link]
Part 3: [link]
NOTE NOTE: The wings and other pieces on Part 1 page are too big! They won't fit very well on your dragon. When you print them out, please shrink to about 75%. This will save you headaches. NOTE OVER.
Here's a tutorial for making a stuffed Night Fury (Toothless) from How to Train Your Dragon. I want to just make them as gifts, these days, so you can make your very own. The construction is fairly simple, if time-consuming, but should be a fine project for beginner or bit-past-beginner sewers.
You don't need a sewing machine, but I highly recommend using one, as the work will go quicker and the final project will be more sturdy. It's a toy, it'll probably get thrown around a lot.
PLEASE DO NOT SELL YOUR FINISHED DRAGON you made from this tutorial. Instead, give it as a gift!
If you make a dragon with this tutorial, PLEASE send me a picture, I'd like to see how it turned out.

It does, though it's not exact. Use a 1/4 to 1/8 in seam allowance.Β

ah, I see. It's just that I prefer no seam allowance, because when I trace it on the paper the lines I make are my guide for the needle. Thank you anyway.

Also, how did you get the Viking part on the red tail?

ShatteredBoneyard [2014-08-12 16:23:43 +0000 UTC]
How do you do the feet, exactly? It says to cut. 2, but there are four legs. Also, the part with the claws and the feet attachment is difficult to understand
π: 0 β©: 1
Skylanth In reply to ShatteredBoneyard [2014-08-16 22:29:58 +0000 UTC]
So for the feet, only the back feet have a bottom-of-the-foot part. The front feet are just made up of the side piece and the belly piece. For attaching the claws, look at pictures 10 and 11. The claws are felt triangles - sew them on as shown in the pictures - flat side of the triangle flush with the edge of the fabric piece (be it the front leg which is part of the belly piece, or the wedge shape piece that is the bottom of the back foot). Sew them on the "good" side of the fabric so they will be sandwiched between the other fabric pieces. When you turn the dragon inside-out, the claws will be pointed outwards.Β
Additionally, if you don't want to bother with sandwiching the claws between the seams, you can glue them on with fabric glue after your dragon is complete. Just stick them on where you think they should go. This also relates to your second question about the tail - the white viking decal on the red tail is just a cut-out of white felt that I glued onto the red piece with fabric glue. You can also paint it on with fabric paint, I've done that too with very nice results.
Hope this helps! I'm sometimes not very good at explaining these things...

I'll definitley make one of these this week, but one question...about how big will it be when finished?
π: 0 β©: 1
Skylanth In reply to Stella-Madrigal-Wolf [2012-09-16 00:23:02 +0000 UTC]
As printed out (and please see the note about the wing size), the dragon will be about 13 inches long and be about 7 inches high. But it's really up to you - you can make the pattern bigger or smaller - for the pictures shown in the tutorial, I made the pieces twice as big. They're scaled down for the free pattern because I wanted them to fit nicely on a sheet of printer paper.

Have fun making this guy. Please read the note on the wings pattern - it needs to be shrunk in half, or the other pieces need to be twice as big in order for the wings to be the right scale. If you have any construction questions along the way, just let me know.
