Description When doing that Marine Mammal Tour, I learned something. People have one track minds.

Yes, this tour exists. Yes, you can take it. Come visit us!

Crits = love, so tell me things I can improve on to make my comics look/work/taste (wait...) better.

AAWWW. I only worked for petsmart, but I get your pain.
You TRY to teach someone something imprtant about an animal... and they blowup your brain.

RichLady: "I would like to buy these goldfish for my party"*points at a tankfull*

Me: "Oh exellent! How many do you need? How are you setting them up... as gifts?

RichLady:"Well i was using them as place settings. Little jars with the guests names on them."

Me: "OOOhhh COOL! And then after the party, you send each one home with the guest? Is this a birthday party, becasue thats a wonderful idea....*excitement and enthusiasm on my part* NOW, you'll need to buy each fish its own net, container of food, and some water conditioner at the LEAST." *runs off to get that stuff*

RichLady: "Thats.. not really what I was....doing."

Me: "Oh, your just putting them in a big tank then? Thats cool. Lemme get you what you need then."

RichLady: "I dont think I really need that for the party. I was just going to flush them down the toilet when I was done, so they'll be fine without the stuff."

Me: ........."WHAT?"

RichLady: "Yes, they'll be fine."

Me: "NO THEY WONT! They'll be swimming in HUMAN FECAL MATTER and chemical WASTE! THEY NEED AIR. If they even SURVIVE the plumbing... then they'll be INCINERATED at the water treatment plant!!!!"

RichLady: "Are you sure? I only need 20 or so for the party."

Me:............"Ma'am.............IM NOT SELLING YOU ANYTHING LIVING."

[worst. customer. EVER.]

Well. That's just special.

These folks didn't want to flush the dolphins down the toilet, just wanted to get as close as they could and take pictures. Which is fair but... a little single-minded.

Argh, not you too! I bet you won't be happy until you pet them, whether they like it or not! Grabby humans, they always want to touch.

Thanks for the fave and the watch, I really appriciate it!

Yeah we usually use something like this: [link] ( I have no idea how to call it in english xD sorry ) It seems to work, We`re more like a cetacean rescue center, We dont do those dramatic seaworldlike shows xD

Skylanth In reply to RobindV [2007-09-30 16:30:42 +0000 UTC]

That's a...what do you call those? I'd call it a Squeegee but I think that's the brand name. A scraper, how's that. The place where I worked didn't have dramatic SeaWorld shows either, just these little tours of the lab to talk about research. I don't think I could do a dramatic Seaworld show, I'm too sarcastic.

D'oh, I fell for the dolphins too. I recall they're predators, as well as orcas. Aha, for a moment I tried to think of platypi, but remembered they weren't marine mammals. I saw a colony of seals one time. They were along the same lines of cute as dolphins too. *tries to recall non-mammalian marine creatures, like Jellyfish and frogfish*

Haha, so true. The ignorance of most people, even some self-confessed "dolphin lovers", can really annoy me though. Not that I feel people should know everything about dolphins, but that people can't see beyond their rigid smile.

Wow! Thats awesome! Im going to volunteer at the Virginia Living Museum this winter on the weekends. So i hope im going to like it. They have beavers and otters there. Those are the only "marine" like animals they have. I wish they had more, but i think its great because i'll be working with animals ^_^ And thats what i love to do! I hope i dont get put with the general audience because i have a problem speaking with people sometimes, and sometimes i have anxiety attacks occasionally. So thats not a good thing hehe ^_^;;

yeah, you'll love it. the easy thing about presentations is that you hold all the cards - you know the answers and they're just the dumb public. You're an authority figure, so talking is easy.

I like it, I like it a lot. What a great idea, comics about nature conservation. The issue you tackle here is a familiar one. I work with endangered orchids and it's hard to balance public access to plants with site degradation concerns. It's important that people can come and look at the orchids and photograph them. Hopefully they are inspired and join the battle. The irony is that the sites are very fragile and frequently sustain damage from these well-intended visits. You want to educate the public about the issues, but it's up to them, what, if anything, they choose to do with the information. Do you work with marine mammals? I just love all things water and I want to go diving with seals...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skylanth In reply to katevlcek [2006-01-03 07:47:23 +0000 UTC]

Great signature, by the way. Whell! I worked at the marine lab, caring for, working with, and giving tours talking about the marine critters, the ones in my comics. Did that for about four years, but decided to get a paying job instead. Oh well, it was fun, and greatly supplimented my college education!

I hear you about working with the public: "To show your love and appriciation, leave it alone." but that's not an easy thing for people to do, they like to run up and hug, and that's not healthy for your orchids, I'm sure.

As for diving with seals...oooh, they're strong buggers and have big teeth. You first.

oh... my GOD!!! this is SO DAMN TRUE!!!! Every summer I work at a reptile exhibit and one of the animals I do best with is alligators. So I stand there holding the 3-4ft American alligator, and while I explain about the aligator and other animals around, I here every two minutes almost on cue I hear 'Will it bite?' So, I laugh a bit, and explain that Spike (the alligator) knows me, and Ive also been trained in how to handle him, and that he was hand raised. I explain he has 2 reasons to bite, one if I was prey which I am too big to be, and two, if he fealt threatened/challenged, which he wasnt. In the end I explain he'd have to be provoked, ad since hes not, he has no reason to bite, but I also tell them anything with a mouth can bite. The person replies. "Oh... so will it bite...?"

Skylanth In reply to yang [2005-03-21 19:07:34 +0000 UTC]

My roomie doesn't like dolphins, she thinks they're creepy. I'm inclined to agree, but I'm around them so much that I'm used to it, and like them just fine. But not to the exclusion of the other critters around the lab, and I think that's where the distinction lies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

yang In reply to Skylanth [2005-03-22 19:00:31 +0000 UTC]

Yes. The best thing to do to turn people off of dolphins is to tell them that they rape other dolphins. Though I think that you'd probably risk your job to be telling that to kindergarteners.

Skylanth In reply to yang [2005-03-22 19:18:29 +0000 UTC]

Aye, with intelligence, first thing to go is innocence. Gotta choose words carefully around the young'ns, though I've found it's best if they continue to be enthralled with nature. Even if it's dolphins. If they have any sort of passion for something outside their little indoor lives, then so be it.

Makes sense that this would happen. After all, random tourists (especially kids) don't really care about the science or all the complicated experiments; they just want to see the cute animals.

Er, anyway. My only beef is that the close-up of the dolphin looks much rougher than the rest of the pic. Otherwise, I like it a lot -- especially the fact that the tourists look the same in the first panel as the last...the exact same way... And those seals have really big, adorable eyes...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skylanth In reply to alcoraiden [2005-02-18 02:07:34 +0000 UTC]

They're Sea Lions. *herring*

I do agree about the dolphin, that one wasn't cleaned up as well as the others. I think I was just rather tired of doing clean-up at that point. It's true that people coming to the lab don't generally come to learn about recent experiments...but it's always a goal of mine to have them leave with a little more info than what they came in with. 'Sides, our stuff is really really cool. I mean, who else is this creative in using skylights?

Aye, we have no seals. But the neighboring mammal group, with which we share space and some facilities, does have seals - a harbor seal and a (female) elephant seal. They are currently doing hearing tests too.

Otters are far too cute for their own good, and for stupid people's safety. I wonder how many people have been mauled attempting to give one a hug.
