**PLEASE READ**Pattern pieces: Read the instructions in their descriptions!
Part 1: [link]
Part 2: [link]
Part 3: [link]
NOTE NOTE: The wings and other pieces on Part 1 page are too big! They won't fit very well on your dragon. When you print them out, please shrink to about 75%. This will save you headaches. NOTE OVER.
Here's a tutorial for making a stuffed Night Fury (Toothless) from How to Train Your Dragon. I want to just make them as gifts, these days, so you can make your very own. The construction is fairly simple, if time-consuming, but should be a fine project for beginner or bit-past-beginner sewers.
You don't need a sewing machine, but I highly recommend using one, as the work will go quicker and the final project will be more sturdy. It's a toy, it'll probably get thrown around a lot.
PLEASE DO NOT SELL YOUR FINISHED DRAGON you made from this tutorial. Instead, give it as a gift!
If you make a dragon with this tutorial, PLEASE send me a picture, I'd like to see how it turned out.

Sorry...I'm being SUCH a pain here....when you say 'plastic wrapped' copper wire....could you elaborate....went to Boyes and they had no clue.

The wire I use is electrical copper wire, I get it on a big spool at the hardware store, or you can buy it by the foot. Look for the solid copper wire and not the braided copper wire (thin strands inside the plastic wrapper) as it just doesn't hold its shape. You can use any sort of wire you like, but I like the plastic wrapped copper wire because a) the ends are less poke-able and b) this wire doesn't contain lead.

Is the wire a sort of cable?
I have green garden wire....but would that be too thin?

I'm not sure I can be any more clear than I already have been. So. How about a picture? Here is my spool of wire that I got from the hardware store, though as previously stated, you can buy it from the hardware store by the foot. [link] It is labeled as being 14 gauge solid copper plastic wrapped wire.
I don't know if your green wire will work because I don't know the gauge. My guess though is that the best would be between 14 and 16, and gauges in the 20-22 range would be far too thin. Here is a Wikipedia article on wire gauge: [link] most of the information presented is about electrical wire, but the gauge as a measure of diameter also applies to floral and craft wire.

That's great....Sorry! I know I'm asking loads...I've used the green wire and just wrapped it around about 3 times.
Thanks so much for the help!

Sorry....but I'm confused my the second part....what is the 'back spine'?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Skylanth In reply to LordOfThePandas [2011-10-24 16:24:13 +0000 UTC]
The back spine is a long piece of wire that runs from the neck to the tail. When it is time to add the wire and stuffing into your dragon, it is best to run this back spine through the U of wire left between the wings, so the spine does not slip out of place.

So, for the wings, do you put wire straight through both so they join?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Skylanth In reply to LordOfThePandas [2011-10-24 16:22:41 +0000 UTC]
Yes, it's one long piece of wire going through both wings. thread the wings onto each end of the stick of wire as if the wire is arms and the wings are sleeves. There will be a little bit of wire left between the two wings, which is good. Fold the wings so they lie one on top of the other and the extra wire between them makes a U shape.

Pipe cleaners work just as well as wire ^^

Skylanth In reply to The-Psychic-Paligin [2011-10-15 16:08:37 +0000 UTC]
Depends on how big your stuffed critter is. If you printed out the pattern as it is given and didn't enlarge it, the pipe cleaner would work okay, though I've used pipe cleaner before and really prefer a bigger gauge such as 20 gauge floral wire. Pipe cleaner unfortunately is too thin for the size I typically make this dragon at (20 inches long by 22 inch wingspan, and 10 inches high). I use 14 or 16 gauge copper wire, which keeps the dragon from going too floppy, especially avoiding floppiness in the huge wings.

What size pipe cleaners you using? Cus i have some 60cm long and i have some 30cm long. Plus pipe cleaners are easier for me to get a hold of and cheaper plus you don't need wire cutters. Copper wire or even garden or a sturdy wire is A) Annoying to get ahold of where i live and B) more expenisve if you can find what your after.

Skylanth In reply to The-Psychic-Paligin [2011-10-18 14:35:29 +0000 UTC]
It's not the length of the pipe cleaners that's the issue but the width. Unless you're using very light fabric and making small dragons, the pipe cleaners aren't going to be strong enough to hold the dragon's poses or support the fabric of the wings. Since I make lots of dragons, I bought a spool of copper wire from a hardware store, and I simply use pliers for cutting wire. They are cheap and available everywhere. You can probably get floral wire from the same place you get your pipe cleaners. I use 18 gauge floral wire which is pretty hefty as far as floral wire goes.
But use whatever you have on hand. I just don't think the pipe cleaners are hefty enough to give you the results you want.

They seem to be strong engough for my dragon
As for buying wire this maybe something to do with living in different countries because i know wire is not cheap here nor easy to get ahold of where i live. And i get my pipcleaners from a book store that has a small selection of arts and crafts materials

Have you made a stuffed toothless using this pattern? I'd like to see it very much! Well, you'll have to use what you can get, I suppose.

I got the idea off someone on DA a couple of months back but i didn't use this patteren and its at home home at the moment with my sewing stuff unfinished. I need to get ahold of some sort of stuffing atm to finish him but the pipecleaners are holding up. Unfortunatly I don't have time while I'm at uni to work on him so he probably won't be finished till the Easter hols when i'm should be revising.

[link] here's a link to the dragon I made with the pattern, to test it out. My hand is in the picture for scale. My pattern I use for making stuffed Toothlesses (and other dragons) is bigger, but I wanted this pattern to fit all one one page for people's ease of printing. Feel free to increase the size if you want. I will say that bigger is easier in this pattern's case.

this is just too tempting!
definitely on my to-do list
out of curiosity what type of fleece did you use? anti-pill?

Skylanth In reply to DeadlyDingo [2011-08-13 04:40:40 +0000 UTC]
Just regular fleece seems to work okay, as I don't intend to wash it. But I've used the anti-pill stuff as well and can't tell the difference, except that maybe the anti-pill has a fuzzier texture.

The only difference I found between anti- pill and blizzard is the anti is better quality...
Also, if I use the pattern is it ok with you if I modify it a little?(still not selling or anything)

I like your Toothless, he's very cute and looks quite cuddly. I'd only recommend putting wire in the wings, makes 'em posable.

Sewpoke In reply to Skylanth [2011-08-13 11:13:35 +0000 UTC]
I might do that with the larger ones... the smaller ones are to be cuddly, and I don't want people poking themselves with wires, which minky doesn't contain very well. x3 But thank you. <3

Skylanth In reply to Sewpoke [2011-08-13 14:38:50 +0000 UTC]
Bend the edges down on themselves and wrap them in tape. That's what I've done for dragons made with minky, and it works just fine.
