Grimlock used to be an Autobot general, and one of the most stubborn. He also owned perhaps one of the best sections of the Autobot team: the Dynobots. Unfortunately, he made the foolish mistake of taking his team along to ambush a group of seemingly anonymous lowlife Decepticons near a natural history museum in Little Rock, Arkansas without Nova Prime's permission. It was unclear what the Decepticons' intentions were, but Grimlock wanted no human casualties and he felt wherever the Cons went, there would be. The battle was short, as they happened to be fighting 2 of the 7 Apostles of Unicron, Shockaract and Darkstream, who overpowered the Dynobots within seconds. It turns out the two sadistic bots wanted the Dynobots to come to the museum to help them complete their latest project: the Dinogeist Force, which was to replace the vehicle mode of each and every Dynobot with dinosaur modes and infuse them with Dark Energon to make them loyal to the Decepticons. Luckily, only half of the process worked on most of the Dynobots... except Grimlock. They infused a dino mode into his basic structure, but it didn't replace his vehicle mode. It now seemed to accompany the mobile carrier. Not only that, but it turned him into one of the first Creed Shifters to appear in centuries (Creed Shifters- Triple changers that have a vehicle/weapon mode and a beast mode who convert into their beast form by saying an oath and driving their bladed weapon into the ground)However, the extra mode addition did make Grimlock pretty peeved at the Decepticons who captured him and his team (as well as feeling anger towards himself for making such a stupid mistake), so without warning, Grimlock burst out of his holding chamber, knocked the two Apostles out, killed their lab assistants, took their weapons and freed his trapped comrades. He now looks back on that day in a heavily scarred point of view. But years of looking back on that mistake have made him wise...and calm.

The Dinobot commander Grimlock is somewhat based off of Piccolo from DragonBall Z. You can kinda see it in his head, shoulders, and cape, but it's also a bit hidden by his visor and his faceplate.
