Description I've been using this as a reference sheet while I work with him over mermay. I've also been doing lots of male torso studies, and I think the results are finally working through.

Upon first seeing this character, I was mesmerized.
However, this critique is for the reference material. Ding large scale creatures is not uncommon yet intimidating at the thought (in my personal opinion), how you took to the design is simple yet that is where the beauty lies. A design can be lost if there is too much for the eye to take in and more of a chore to implement in a series of works.

As much as I praised for the simplicity in the design it lacks content. I did pick up in the fine details you added on the body, inviting onlookers for a closer look, the whale half lack a bit of texture to the back. Whales of this size didn't appear out of nowhere, the time spend in the ocean allows all manner of life and corals to grow. Even for a dreamy, fantasy inspired whale mermaid (merman) he may have some details on the back, a suggestion, if you are interested may be light flares or streaks on his back mimicking that of how an ocean refracts light. This doesn't have to suggest a shiny skin or hidden light source but may add to his dreamlike appearance. Aside from that the outlines are sharp although understandable if you were after a a resolved look.

Using a monochromatic design helps not only defining a solid color silhouette, yet empowers his already piercing eyes. The use of the height scale is vital when establishing a set size, this also compliments the surreality this character radiates. Mat background that is easy on the eyes and showcases the character wonderfully. Side view may have a twist in the tail yet is acceptable for finned character as the tail needs clarity and not only that, it is not photogenic to capture or render a tail fin on its thinnest angle. I honestly can't stress enough about how elegant the hair looks, surprisingly fitting for the character's face and personality, this somewhat serious yet gentle graceful feel.

All in all a wonderful piece!!!

This is really helpful showing scale I mean it's easy to tell that Milo is big, but how big compared to a human...

I went with a 6ft human, although my measurements are slightly off. Roughly speaking he's around 26ft. I wanted him to be large, but not so large he's impersonal. I think 30ft is the biggest you can get before it comes improbable for any relationships to develop.

Kron is about half his size (13 ft I think.... around 4 m), being relatively large tiger shark. I think Milo is just a good size
- I mean well big enough to be a whale, but not too big for interacting with regular sized humans.

Actually the scale is almost the same as with Mercury when he's small and regular human

How did this elude me?

Not at all.
It only adds to the how it adds to the impact the image gives.
This surrealistic character of a dreamscape where size may be an illusion.
Even whales depicted in similar scenes have scale differences.

I think everyone is entitled to self-indulgent OC art, I know I enjoy seeing people's original art works and it's been tons of fun seeing all the mermaid and mermaid hybrids for May.
