Description
Another redo of an older portrait I made around 10 months ago. I love to revisit my work every so often, to see how I'm progressing and what has changed in my work and what has not. At this point in my art journey, my focus is improvement, and learning the fundamentals to where I can say I've mastered them. I'm still a long ways off but I'm learning. With this redo, I opted not to use the symmetry like I did last time. I went for more asymmetry with the hair and lips. He's still more feminine then I would have liked but I'll leave that to remedy in my next portrait. Here are my previous tries!

I would like to admit to being a bit mean for knocking half a star off you technique rating, know that you work is incredible and ever improving!
As pointed out on a previous critique of the same character's former portrait, the realism is as solid as the sense of livelihood. I sense your character here breathing and expressing its emotions beyond that what lies on the surface. One can tell the thought you put into this character and your art style, the care and passion.
I would say it may be talent yet it would, in my opinion, be more fitting to be called hard work.
The overall look appears more refined and detailed, I can see the character looks larger than life yet that is mainly due to the fact that I am aware of this character's size. Had not given that information, one would assume a cyan man in grey ocean. Perhaps see how one can include scale into a scene without distracting the viewer from the main focus.
Which leads to the broccoli part of a critique.
You have perfected your realistic anatomy and started to work more finely, keep that up.
The scars on the hand seem too... how to describe it?
Too neat, simplified? It feels more like a base you have yet finished from an artist;s standpoint yet at the same time look the part of scars on skin. Perhaps take into account that scars are uneven, at times jagged or even almost invisible to the naked eye at points. It is how the body tries to repair itself and thus wouldn't be able to do so efficiently or consistently.
Knowing how your worked has evolved may conclude it as a stepping stone you are still developing.
For example how the hair had a similar look in past works as strokes that does work as the final product, seeing the hair in this piece proves how you are starting to grasp how less means more to details as well as refinement in how you learned how to draw them in a believable sense.
It is works like these where one wouldn't want to over elaborate yet have so much to share.
In short, you are doing well and appears to take your own criticism to heart while looking to others to point out your most prominent problem areas. Keep it honest to yourself and thank you for the opportunity to see your work.
In my opinion, I am ecstatic at this piece and as I said before, am looking forward to what you have in store for the future.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to share your thoughts!
I agree on the bit about the scars, adding naturally rough features like scars, messy hair, facial spots and so on in a carefully thought out way without making it seem so is still a challenge for me, I'll work harder in the future, thank you!

As I've said before in a prior critique of one of your works this character is, by far and away, my personal favourite character of yours. I've always been partial to aquatic characters in general and this has to be one of the most unique merfolk or merfolk-like individuals I've ever come across. Quite apart from how original he is as an individual, I just LOVE the art you produce with him. Today you were once again able to really nail the picture and produce something absolutely, undeniably, beautiful.
You have a real talent for capturing how light flows underwater. The subtle touch of the reflection of the surface's rippling light against his skin was a wonderful addition. His eyes? Incredibly done; the shading on them is perfect, so much so that I could've almost believed this was a real individual looking back at me. I believe I brought up this point in my last critique of one of your pieces, but it does need to be said - your inclusion of scarring across his skin adds a fantastic touch of realism to his overall design.
It's always a good day when I see this character emerge in my notification feed. It made me smile to see this piece today. Your technique and skill are undeniably apparent through your work - it's an absolute pleasure to see it and be able to share my thoughts about it.

Talk about a glow up, lookit the sweet whale boi all grown up.
I really feel lie you've finally found that middle ground for shpwing the age of your characters and I love how you have such a wide variety of character's ages as opposed to making them all look like teens/early twenties. I like Milo looking like an adult, not old but aged. He seems tired and solemn which fits what you've told me of him as a character, as I recall he's supposed to be a few hundred years old right? Unless my goldfish memory serves me wrong.
I love the scars, I know I mentioned it before but you did a great job of making his skin look like whale skin as opposed to human skin, even with how pale he is. I do like the water reflections that you have on him, but I feel like they compete with the scars for attention visually. They made the piece a lot busier than I think it needs to be. I hesitate to say get rid of them, but maybe tone down the reflections? If he is deep under water would there be much water reflection without light? Just something to keep in mind for next time.
His face looks stunning, really and truly, I'm not sure why it was initially so crooked but I think you did a top notch job cleaning him up and staying away from the symmetry tool. (Milo's nose is finally a manageable size too!) I do think the tool was what made your faces seem a bit uncanny, there were just too clean and perfect if that makes sense? Milo looks nature, real, and I love it.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR MERMAY, I WANNA SEE MORE OF THE SWEET BOI!

You're right about his age, I plan to make that more plain with future paintings of him. And thank you! I'm proud of this face as well, the next time I redo this piece I'll take your advice and avoid the water reflections, they do fight for attention on his face, or at least I'll portray them differently. Thank you for the feedback as always! I appreciate it so much!
