Description
I've never done a lineless side view before, and this one has it's flaws for sure but I think it came out alright. I'll be doing more with this character soon! I'm doing my best to resist working with him until mermay, but ah well...Enjoy!Almost forgot to mention, the little fae he is holding is this lil girl Dream Creature , her name is not fae but for now that's what I'll call her.

This is just beautiful! It definitely caught my eye and stands out very well.
I love the lighting, the contrast is beautiful and the shadows are placed very well!
The subtle glowing in his hand really makes the image 'pop'!
(How do you get your shading to be that damn smooth!?)
The proportions are also very accurate and his expression is very nice.
I LOVE and I mean absolutely LOVE his hair, it looks so soft and fluffy!
I really adore the little fairy/creature's design also, it's so cute. <3
Overall this is a wonderful drawing! Keep up the fantastic work!

You're very kind, thank you! I made a speedpaint if you'd like to see the process with how I made it.

This is a really creative idea - I really like how you used your dream creature to emphasise the merman's size, as well as showing them interact. You can tell he's a gentle creature from the look on his face, which is really well shaped and built up, as well as seeing the curiosity emanate from the tiny creature.
I do have a few nitpicks on how you shaded and blended the piece however; it feels too smooth, as in you can't really see any brush strokes or feel much texture besides the freckles on his hand - the hair could also have done with more texture work and focus play. The face also feels a little flat and harshly shaded, but the eye is really well done. It's a tad unclear if the creature is the light source or not, since the lighting is a little erratic.
Overall, this is a very good piece despite you mentioning you've not attempted a lineless profile before. I really like seeing your characters interacting, since they have so many possibilities since they're so original. You did use brush strokes to create the fin detail on the small creature, which you can exploit and use to bring in more detail and effects. The only recommendation I have is play with custom brushes, and don't make my mistakes with over-blending. Keep up the great work girl!

Thank you for taking the time to critique! I'll keep in mind what you said and work to integrate that in the future works I make.

I first figured Fae would be really small ... but now that I think of it she's that small compared to Milo who is HUGE .... so she must be around the size of a little kid or a toddler...

She's like the size of a tiny new born, Milo is roughly speaking around 26ft long all together. I gotta draw more of her sometime

Your line-less digital painting is coming along real nice!
I think the lighting looks stunning, and the facial proportions on Milo look much better than they had before when you showed me the WIP.
I do have a couple of suggestions; you fixed the tangent line where the top of the fae's head was touching Milo's thumb but you still have a tangent line where the very tip f his thumb is just touching his pointer finger. It's a minor issue, but I think you could better frame the fae in the piece if Milo's thumb was raised slightly; that would get ride of the tangent lines and create a circle around the fae drawing the viewer's attention to her.
The colours are a bit boring. Don't get me wrong, you did a stunning job with the painting, like, 10/10! But most of the piece is cold colours. The fae has some pink and slightly warmer blue, but over all the piece is nothing but cool blues and grays. Even fae's bio-luminescence is a cool blue. I know Milo's skin is supposed to be blue/gray, but maybe push some warm colours into his skin as well? Assuming he's a warm blooded mammal, being a magical whale and all, he'd probably still have some pink/peach tinges to his skin on his cheeks, maybe the tip of his nose, chin, lips, or ears? I think adding a little colour variation in his skin will help him look more lifelike too.
I want to ruffle Milo's hair something terrible, it looks so poofy and soft. I think you did a fantastic job making the hair flow and float like the characters are underwater, and you did a great job showing depth with all the different layers of hair. I'm not sure why some of the hair looks fuzzy and out of focus though, was that done on purpose?
One last thing, those shadows on Milo's forehead seem off to me, I'm not sure if it's too close to black or if it's the sharp angle of the shadow that's throwing me off.
Overall, the piece is still amazing and I'm excited to see more of the characters!

Hope it helps ;3; I always worry I come off as harsh when I give feedback.
And I hope you don't mind me leaving feedback in comments, I'm not a big fan of the DA critique widget.

I understand, kinda was curious for your rating in the star systems but no issue, I really appreciate you leaving your thoughts regardless.

I think the star ratings are silly, personally X'D Like, technique and originality I get, but I have no idea what it means by vision or impact.

kinda redundant I grant you. I also took "vision" as like, "how inspired is this piece? How imaginative" and impact being "how impactful was it to you, was it shocking, did it affect you?"
