Description Tried something new with this portrait of Milo. He was a bit too "clean" and had very little visual interest, so I tried adding the more realistic scars that you would find on larger sea creatures such an manatees, sperm whales, sharks, humpbacks, etc. Enjoy!

I must confess that this is most likely my favourite of all the characters I've seen you draw. The inspiration behind him was a subject I was interested in long before I encountered either your work as a whole or this particular character. Whenever I think I can't be any more blown away by either Milo or your immense level of artistic skill, you top my expectations every time. And this time? You've really blown my expectations, if you'll excuse the pun, right out of the water!

The shading on this piece is absolutely perfect, particularly on Milo's skin. Speaking of which, I absolutely commend your decision to give his skin more scars similar to those one would expect to see on real cetaceans. They look exactly as intended; they put me in mind of the scarring on the skin of Risso's Dolphins or a Cuvier's Beaked Whale. The setup for this picture as a whole is adorable and seriously makes me smile; I just love seeing this gentle giant of a character interacting with animals or characters smaller than himself. You can tell just how gentle he is at just a glance of this piece.

Again, I truly commend you for this piece - it's nothing short of marvelous, perfect even. I adore what you've done here and can't wait to see what else is done with this wonderful character of yours. You should be proud of yourself for this wonderful piece of art.

Alright, adding that little bit of brush texture to the background really helped make it more visually appealing without drawing attention away from Milo and his new fren. I think the brush strokes look a bit like wispy clouds and that really helps break up the monotonous single colour.

You've still got a bit of a tangent going on with the bird's beak and wing being so close to Milo's face. Something you could try doing to check for tangent lines on your own is to create another layer and fill in the shapes of the characters in all black, then zoom out and look at the thumbnail. Is the silhouette still readable? Can you tell what the different shapes are supposed to be? Are they touching or blending together in a way that makes them hard to read? Over all though, you've gotten soooooo much better at not making tangent lines, I see them less and less in the pieces you do.

The Pelican's wing also disappears into the background, it's very hard to read the bird's left wing. (The one we see the inside of, it's so light and only barely lighter than the blue background).

I definitely think the scars add more visual interest to Milo, I like his design a lot better when he doesn't look so soft and clean. He's still the gentle giant I know and love, but the scars add not just to his design but to his backstory as well. Like I said before, the scars suggest life hasn't been the kindest to Milo but regardless he's triumphed and remained a gentle emphatic being regardless. Hanging out with whales, and seals, and pelicans.

I'm very happy to see more of Milo and I'm excited to see the progress you continue to make with him.

The more the whale gets hurt, the more scars appear.
That is how I made the comparison.

The bird kinda looks like it wants to eat his nose...

and now I can't unsee it XD

But the painting itself looks amazing! The scars are a cool effect.
