Reference sheet commission for *Foxchibi of Rayeir! I had immense fun while working on this, and I hope it shows.
Text was written by *Foxchibi with a few edits by moi, and the lovely human!Rayeir silhouette and the array were also done by *Foxchibi with a few slight tweaks (color) by me. :>
Originally finished 20120414 but waited to post it today, Monday, for the start of my work week. And before anyone asks, yes, there are many influences of Reign of Fire wyverns in this design. c:

I was wondering if it would be too much trouble to ask of what kind of reference sheets from other artists that you like.

I love reference sheets that treat the character like a being rather than something that 'looks cool'. What I mean is, I like seeing depth in the details and the text. The more details I can see and read that went into the character, the more respect I have for the artist for fleshing the character out as well as the technical skill that went into the image(s). It also makes it obvious if the artist has done their homework in the anatomy department as well as the understanding that goes into it, but that isn't always necessary! Harmonic color use is ideal, there's nothing worse than a very dark character on a neon green background -- blinding!

Most of the time when I see reference sheets of only the side view, it kind of makes me wonder about the actual shape of the head in particular.
You are totally right about the character, in particular the amount of research and back story(if any), they're always such interesting reads. A character which is just drawn there as if posing for a contest is indeed kind of bland.
And on the colour part, I find that you are right too! I've seen reference sheets that either have a background make the subject hard to see or distract entirely from the character.
