A LONNNNNG overdue art trade with , her tragic and creepy OC’s Julianne and Marianna.This was a tough one for me—Julianne’s hair was giving me some trouble, been a while since I drew really long locks. After having to throw out many, many attempts, I realized I needed to change the composition and move the characters around. Originally, they were in a similar stance as in the reference I was using, but it was just becoming too complex to try to do all that detail so close together. Long hair did not help in that mix.
Also new for me: this piece was almost completely colored digitally. Half because my prismas are pretty much gone, half because I’m feeling a bit more confident about coloring in Photoshop lately. I’m still a little shaky (doesn’t help that I have neither tablet nor mouse: this was all done with a touch pad). It’s important to start moving out of my comfort zone though, and I think I’m making good progress. Any suggestions are more than appreciated.

Yassanswumgame, I’m so sorry this is coming to you so late! I am not worthy! I’m also sorry that I mixed up the eyes—I normally try to be as accurate as I can when drawing someone’s characters, but by the time I glanced back at the ref and realized my mistake, repositioning the eyes would have meant compromising the eerie stare. I hope you still like it anyway!

The only reason they are is because when the lead singers mother died, he had a bad experience with a priest. (This is how I remember the story, so it may be off lol)
He grew up very Christian, and his priest came to talk to him and her when his mother was dying of cancer (i think it was cancer), and he essentially condemned her to hell because he got mad at her. It scared him, and when she finally died, he prayed and prayed and asked the priest to pray with him, and he ignored him and still insisted that his mother went to hell.
:/ That's why he always sounds so angry at god.

As Yassanswumgame told me, the relationship between the two characters was meant to symbolize how hard the cycle of abuse is to break. Both girls were adopted by an abusive man, who became Julianne’s (the older one with the blue hair) lover. Eventually, she fell in love with Marianna and decided she needed to protect her, so she killed their adopted father. However, with a warped sense of love, she’s caused Marianna a lot of harm trying to keep her safe. She pulled out one of her eyes and embedded it in her hand, so she could always watch over her.
So you can probably see how I drew some parallels from Counting Bodies like Sheep.

That's awesome, I love messed up love stories. That song has been a secret favorite of mine for a while... Most people I know aren't into that kind of music, so I don't get to rave about it much. That song can be taken so many ways too, it fits with a lot of messed up relationships... "Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils"... Indeed. Indeed.

My music taste is very eclectic, but a lot of the time, it’s the prog/metal/rock that inspires my work. I liked how the song reflected the whole “I must hurt you and isolate you and prevent you from thinking for yourself to keep you safe’, it seemed to mirror the characters very well.
One of my friends showed me that song (she also has a very eclectic taste) but I live in a place where generally speaking rock and any sub-genres are not the preferred sound, so I know how you feel.

BUTT yes. I agree with your summary, it's awesome to hear those dark themes written alongside music so well. Lyrics always really influence me, and a lot of bands that I like aren't necessarily the most musically talented as they are just damn good lyricists.
Plus this song has influenced a lot of artists... The first time I heard of it, it was recommended from someone who had done some incredible Jhonen Vasquez fanart and had been inspired heavily by Pet.
