A Kneipp treatment while looking at the pictures (hot-cold-hot-cold)
Do you know Sebastian Kneipp? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastia…

No don't know Sebastian Kneipp and ...  I'm not sure you've completely understood the concept of this treatment. I think you have to go out and physically experience cold and hot!! If photos do it for you though ...!!

LilliTheSquirrel In reply to smallsofthamish [2015-02-23 17:16:31 +0000 UTC]

I understand it this way: sitting beside a hot stove and looking at the falling snow outside
And since you don't know Mr. Kneipp you can't maintain something else!!!!

I would not dare to contradict you! (is that a phrase for google translate?!) You know Mr Kneipp, I do not and we have a saying here " I don't have a leg to stand on!" which means I am in a situation where I cannot prove anything!

No, I can understand this phrase with my own infinite wisdom! My understanding is better than my active vocabulary, and most of things I can guess - maybe I'm sometimes wrong   Is it very evident that my comments are based on google translate?
By the way my listening comprehension is next to nothing

No it's not evident that you use google translate. In fact I would have guessed that you DIDN'T use it: you're too good! Google translate can arrive at some very weird translations.

Ooooohhhh! I fear I was fishing for compliments!
Of course you're right with the weird results of google translate, I know them from translations of English manuals!
I don't ask google for whole sentences, only for single words. And I've found that the LEO translator is better.
Sometimes, when I distrust the given translation I look into the good old dictionary too!
A hurrah for DA, it helps me to polish up my English!
And a much greater hurrah for friends like you!

Is that what you were doing?!  I had no idea you were fishing for compliments ... you shouldn't have told me!!
I didn't know about LEO translator so I checked it out and I agree: it's much better than google translate. Thanks for passing on the information. I agree about friends too and it's so good to be able to tease you, ( hopefully without offence?!) one usually has to be so careful when speaking to someone whose first language is not English; words and phrases can so often be misunderstood. Thanks for being a good friend!

Haha, I appreciate humerous people like you very much! You make me smile on a murky day - and I hope, "murky" is the right adjective for a shitty day
Is "shitty" to vulgar? In my ears it sounds funnily and much better than the German equivalent

smallsofthamish In reply to LilliTheSquirrel [2015-03-01 17:17:15 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad I make you smile on grotty days!! 'Murky' can be used - it maybe suggests mist or fog but if it was just a dull, grey and wet day we may say 'gloomy'. Shitty is not too vulgar but I wouldn't use it in front of my grown up sons (they would be shocked that I knew the word!! ) but I've heard far worse! If German is anything like Afrikaans I know that it can be very explicit!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LilliTheSquirrel In reply to smallsofthamish [2015-03-02 18:17:31 +0000 UTC]

"Murky" reminded me on "vermurkst" (leo told me "botched" for it), so I've chosen that This is my intuitive use of a language
I suppose Afrikaans can be very expressive! No, I meant the simple word "Scheiße", it sounds so dirty. "Shit" is more uncommon to me, so the feeling is better with it
Do you know the phrase "Life is like a baby shirt: short and shitty"?
And now enough of this indecent talk! Next theme: roses or butterflies

smallsofthamish In reply to LilliTheSquirrel [2015-03-05 10:29:11 +0000 UTC]

You are definitely educating me in German!! I don't use the word shit but I could get used to sheiße!! I now also know (Leo) that murky is closest to dunstig and vermurkst is botched (which is doing a job very badly, we also have a saying for botched: "making a pig's ear of something" !!) Never heard the 'life is like a baby shirt' phrase before! So now my education is almost complete and I will be able to hold an intelligent conversation with some German speaking Swiss friends who are visiting us in August!!
As for butterflies and roses ... is that the next German lesson?!

LilliTheSquirrel In reply to smallsofthamish [2015-03-14 16:15:42 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's nice with the pig's ear! But I fear for your Swiss friendhip with that vocabulary...  I would strongly recommend not to use the sch-word more than twice in one sentence!
Next lesson:  = Schmetterling      = Rose   =  Eichhörnchen

smallsofthamish In reply to LilliTheSquirrel [2015-03-19 19:31:13 +0000 UTC]

Hehe ... I'll be very careful: perhaps I'll just stick with 'prost', much safer than the sch-word! Our friends taught us that when you say prost you should also kiss your loved one!!

It is indeed a lovely church and as you say, so peaceful. It was lovely sitting inside for a few minutes and appreciating the silence.

Agreed, although it is snowing here at the moment so I'm hoping that tomorrow I shall wake up to a winter wonderland!

The hills in the background of Cyprus seem fine for ski, no trees?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

smallsofthamish In reply to andersvolker [2015-01-21 10:54:53 +0000 UTC]

no, not many trees and no snow either at the level in the photo; much of Cyprus is dry and barren and mostly fairly warm all year round. There are plenty of trees up in the Troodos Mountains though where it is much colder and, I believe, they do have snow in the winter and skiing is possible.

Nice idea, skiing with beach on one place.

Nice idea but beach and ski slopes are, unfortunately, not very close to each other!

But apres ski party can be on beach in a deck chair.

smallsofthamish In reply to andersvolker [2015-01-22 13:20:34 +0000 UTC]

I would opt for the apres ski and no skiing; these old knees are not up to skiing!

Old knees like mine are fine for Nordic walking, is this possible in Cyprus?

smallsofthamish In reply to andersvolker [2015-01-22 17:31:53 +0000 UTC]

I think you would manage!

Now we get winter back and begin walking at home and make beach inhouse with tea.

Thank you my friend. It was quite an impressive place. Glad you mentioned the lady coming out: I had two very similar photos and deliberated for ages as to which one to use. The other one, although certain aspects were slightly better, had a different lady leaving but, she was wearing white. In the end I decided to go with the red lady, that splash of colour just seemed to lift it!

Is there an organ in there?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

smallsofthamish In reply to slowdog294 [2015-01-12 22:33:43 +0000 UTC]

There is but I couldn't for the life of me describe it! It didn't stand out amongst all the ornate features of the church so am thinking it wasn't all that spectacular compared to the rest of the church.

slowdog294 In reply to smallsofthamish [2015-01-12 23:36:01 +0000 UTC]

Some pipe organs are well hidden, with the console ion the choir loft with the pipes since most old churches have tracker touch mechanical actions between the console and the pipes. Or, it could have been electronic...

smallsofthamish In reply to slowdog294 [2015-01-21 23:54:52 +0000 UTC]

Have to confess I don't really take a lot of notice of church organs unless they are being played and then, wow, some of those sounds send shivers down the spine! I remember being in the Sacre Coeur in Paris when there was a service on and I listened spellbound to those deep rumbling notes.
