WOW, 12th century. Just sitting here wondering what it was like. A hard life I would think. Staring at your picture...

Indeed and the area where this abbey stands can have really severe winters - the thought of a Yorkshire winter with no central heating ...... I feel cold and shivery just thinking about it!!

That's how I feel about the place. It has stood through centuries, survived King Henry VIII's demolishing of Abbeys (just) and if only it could talk would tell incredible stories to add to our historical knowledge.

It is a beautiful and imposing building. Thankfully it is managed and maintained by English Heritage, an organisation which sets out to save many of our historic buildings. So, hopefully, it will be standing a while longer. Thank you so much for your comment - pleased you like this little bit of our history!

Thanks for the link - I see the similarities, although the difference in climate is very obvious from the backgrounds!! Yorkshire can be quite bleak at times: wet, and very cold. It certainly doesn't tell a tale of baked earth as in your photo!

Well, in the Alcarria of Cuenca the weather is not as warm as you think. They may reach kinda cold temperatures in winter.

Must get my geography sorted! Is it high altitude? It is hot in summer though? Went to the Catalonian Pyrenees 2 years ago and it was scorching hot up there.

Only 835 metres above the sea level yet it's between mountains so...

Rievaulx considerably lower at around 170 meters but is in a valley below higher moorland. The most telling difference, I imagine, is the degree of latitude at about 54 degrees compared to ... ? about 40 degrees? Never gets very hot.

Do you know about microclimas?

smallsofthamish In reply to Autodidacta [2013-04-03 14:39:18 +0000 UTC]
I imagine that's what we would call a microclimate and if so, yes, although I don't have much knowledge of the science behind it.

I hadn't heard of this place before, it looks stunning! But then, we're quite partial to ruins
We are sort of planning a few holidays this year (don't ask about previous years, lol) so if we get to Yorkshire this could well be on our itinerary.
I've been to Yorkshire twice but it's a big place so I haven't seen very much of it.

Worth a visit, says she who has never paid the money to go in!! North Yorkshire is beautiful. We love the Moors: so rugged and almost bleak at times. If interested here are 3 links to N Yorks sights: another one of Rievaulx [link] on the Moors [link] and the town of Helmsley [link]

Wow! Thanks for those links. Yorkshire is beautiful I've always wanted to go to York (the city) but really I want to see the moors and all the little towns as well.

The skeletal scaffolding of gothic static is resistant against the power of time.

Absolutely and, no doubt they will still be standing long after our modern buildings have been demolished!

Glass and steel are fine new static elements which can be impressive, too, where you cannot see the construction and the hard work to built.
Is it planned to rebuilt the roof?

smallsofthamish In reply to andersvolker [2013-03-04 18:21:59 +0000 UTC]
Glass and steel are certainly good building materials but I have to confess that for me they do not hold the appeal of stone.
As far as I understand, the buildings of Rievaulx Abbey were destroyed and the roof stripped of its valuable lead on the orders of Henry VIII. I don't think that there are any plans to rebuild the roof after nearly 500 years. I guess half the charm of the Abbey is the fact that it is a ruin and the history behind it.

Perhaps an invisible glass roof is an idea to protect the abbey against complete fall and create a museum site.

smallsofthamish In reply to andersvolker [2013-03-05 12:01:43 +0000 UTC]
It's a thought but I doubt it will happen, certainly not in my lifetime! We Brits are strange: we quite like our ruins!! Rievaulx Abbey attracts many thousands of visitors per year and is one of our most popular "English Heritage" sites so I imagine it is well maintained and although there is a small museum attached, the whole site is in itself a museum. I guess to put on a glass roof would be very costly and I feel that a glass structure would detract from the feel of history which surrounds Rievaulx. That's a personal feeling. No doubt many would disagree with that thought but I think many would agree.

It must be stong visitors which come on rainy days and freeze in the abbey. But you are right, its very impressive as it is.
