Description
I drew this… last month, I think? Maybe a month and a half ago? Either way, I forgot to scan it for ages, which turned out to be fortuitous because my host family’s house has much better lighting than my own (my room here has a skylight! How cool is that?). Anyway, the story behind this is that my sister and I did an art challenge in which we each drew one of the other’s characters wearing clothes that matched a randomly-chosen aesthetic. She gave me Hunley and cottagecore, and I took the concept and ran with it.So, without further ado, behold…
the great H.L. Hunley, cottagecore submarine!
…Oh, and here are the notes
-Apparently, the upper part of Hunley’s hair is cream-colored, not white; you can see that here and here , in some of my sister’s recent drawings. I’ve been drawing and imagining her with white hair for ages and my sister never corrected me lmao
-Anyway, cottagecore is one of my absolute favorite aesthetics - it’s very nostalgic to me, as it reminds me of a lot of the books I read as a little kid! Because of that, I would normally go for a more fairytale-esque design, but since this is still Hunley I decided to tone it down and give her a simple outfit instead of a more frilly or whimsical one.
-I went with a strawberry theme because strawberries and cottagecore just go hand in hand in my mind. Specifically, the strawberry designs on her clothes - as well as the pink color surrounding them - are inspired by the way strawberries are often portrayed in Winnie-the-Pooh merchandise (including my own comfort object!), only red instead of pink.
-The idea of her carrying a basket of berries on the barbs of her torpedo randomly came to me while I was drawing this piece, and it was too amusing - and cute - to pass up!
-I originally planned to give her brown overalls since that would fit better with her normal muted palette and could also match her current rusty appearance in real life. However, I kept imagining them as green and ultimately went with that, partially because I couldn’t see them any other way and partially because green looked better with the strawberry theme! The brown idea does live on in her shoes, though.
-I went with pink gingham for her shirt and bandana just because it looked cute and matched the berries. Also, I really love the color pink, so that was also a deciding factor.
For her part in the aesthetic challenge, my sister drew Mauretania in a kidcore aesthetic outfit. Check that out here !
