my worst dilemna is that the fight could go either way: kid could see edward's asymmetry and either: a) faint or b)want to destroy him even more

If I remember correctly, it was the opposite leg. That would probably make it worse, because that is two factors now instead of one.

Not quite. True, he does have one of each for both arms and legs, but Kid looks at the left/right symmetry, meaning the left side would have to look exactly like the right (if one arm is metal, the other one would have to be, or Kid would go berserk) to keep Kid sane.
