Description Technique summary
1) Convert to greyscale
2) Burn and dodge (yes, you can use Layers, but I prefer doing it manually. More control.)
3) select with magic wand
4) Layer VIA cut
5) pencil replace outline with intended line colour.
6) edit and touch up.

Commentaries by the Undivided council,
Ellie and Leslie.

It was long cause I don't really want to make prior assumptions bout the reader(s)

Decided to do a tutorial on my second (Faster) method of doing lineart from scans while working on the 4th Reaper Absol Comic....
(Ooooo teaser...... )

The other method's tutorial is here: [link]

Basically posting this to share techniques..... and if anyone wants to try using this technique.

Currently use it mainly for more complex pics, comics and the more mediocre stuff I produce.
Yes, Lineart can be rather simple......

Absols are pokemon from and (C) Nintendo Game freak.

Well, it's in the introduction paragraph of the tutorial.
Photoshop 6 was the one used.
Though
it works for any version of photoshop and GIMP too.

Welcome.
it's a very fast, but rather crude lineart tech.

YOU saved me! This is exactly what I needed! I never understood the magic wand, I always had to just...paint the line art on which sometimes takes a while. you don't understand how much this means to me so much time wasted T.T Thanks haha sorry if I sound a little on the dramatic side but it really would take forever...~*

Well, This is a much simpler and faster method of lineart...... but it's significantly less clean than the usual painting on methods.

Hmmmmm
Try the GIMP

It's almost as powerful as Photoshop,
but best of all
it's absol-utely free.

run a Google search on it.
and you'll find it

Spread the art!
this tutorial works fine on GIMP as well.

I %^$ want to KILL GIMP.
I tried it once, it overthrew my damn computer!
Everytime, every, single, friggin' time I wanted to look at a picture, ANY picture, even a little 2 bit emote, I had to sit and wait for 5 %^#^%* minutes for GIMP to load.
No other program was allowed to open.
....piece of $%$#^ *growl* *fume*

Snowfyre In reply to misora-hunter [2007-10-26 04:08:11 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmmm

Think may be your com's speed issue.
It works fine for my com

(Did you check it's installation requirements? )
unless of course you didn't install the runtime environment software.

Though if you needed to convert the GIMP files to others, there's many other software that works too.

misora-hunter In reply to Snowfyre [2007-10-26 04:57:09 +0000 UTC]

No, it's the simple fact that it was a hostile takeover.
Paint wouldn't open, Windows viewer wouldn't open; it was all GIMP, all the time.
There are times I'd like to look at pictures, not mess with them.
I really don't like being told what to do by a machine.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowfyre In reply to misora-hunter [2007-10-26 07:14:19 +0000 UTC]

Did you install the correct runtime thing?
Though
if else fails,
there's always windows restore.

misora-hunter In reply to Snowfyre [2007-10-27 07:46:28 +0000 UTC]

Very true.
I just don't mess with it anymore.
Idiot-proof programming really rubs me the wrong way.

Snowfyre In reply to misora-hunter [2007-10-27 12:08:25 +0000 UTC]

Hmmmm
Well, GIMP is not for the faint of heart, cause it's known to be really user unfriendly as compared with photoshop.

But hey, it's free.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

misora-hunter In reply to Snowfyre [2007-10-28 07:20:14 +0000 UTC]

This is true.
So, I just left it alone.

Snowfyre In reply to misora-hunter [2007-10-28 15:37:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, unless you wish to spend the money on photoshop, you'll eventually revisit GIMP.... if you want to embark on digital art.

Poila-Invictiwerks [2007-09-21 10:05:24 +0000 UTC]

It's essentially similar to the inking techniques deployed in an earlier tutorial, but this is a more simplified method. BTW, if you have the time, please check the DD for Today (21/09/2007) on Photoshop CS inking methods, it's very useful - somehow you can use it as reference for your next tutorial.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowfyre In reply to Poila-Invictiwerks [2007-09-21 15:38:15 +0000 UTC]

Not really, this method is quite different from the earlier method. (Ok, it's similar in the second step in replacing colour and also shifting lineart to a new layer.... but other than that it uses different tools for the initial creation. )

It does have quality issues unless you decide to spend lots of time cleaning up the thing, but if you do it fast it's much less of a headache than the previous method.

Note: Both of my established inking tutorials employ very simple tools to get the job done. Sure, you can use the pen tool and so on, but there's always lots of other methods.

May revisit the pen tool in my next drawing that I'm using as an experiment, but that will be some time away.

And thanks for the tutorial's suggestion. that one was very easy to follow.

Don't bother waiting for photoshop. If you don't have it the new ones are HIDEOUSLY EXPENSIVE.....
This works with GIMP. That one's free.

Or you could try photoshop elements.

Dracar-Thirjin In reply to Snowfyre [2007-09-20 11:38:42 +0000 UTC]

i would prefer photoshop, but there is one that is about 50, but it is kind of out dated

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowfyre In reply to Dracar-Thirjin [2007-09-20 14:16:53 +0000 UTC]

The current one? CS 3? That one retails at...... a holy expensive cost.

Though ya ask me, think photoshop 6 is good enough.
(Note: Photoshop 5 lacks text support)

Dracar-Thirjin In reply to Snowfyre [2007-09-20 14:52:52 +0000 UTC]

no CS3 is 500, but there is another that is less, i think it was v6, but i cant remember.

Snowfyre In reply to Dracar-Thirjin [2007-09-20 15:02:16 +0000 UTC]

500 bucks is if you upgrade. Fresh it's bout 1.2K

Unless you are nuts and buy the master collection at bout 3K.

But still, $500 US is HOLY EXPENSIVE for a software, unless you are going professional.

Snowfyre In reply to theEyeoftheMind71 [2007-09-20 01:35:49 +0000 UTC]

Elements is a stripped-down version of the real photoshop.
Bit more newbie friendly then the real photoshop or GIMP, which just dump all the tools for ya.
