Description Think it's about time for another break from the city after this, I'm getting worn out.

Added: stairs to access outer walls, dock, more homes, water and two test terrains (more will be added later), new building arrangement. Stalls removed from marketplace area for now, there's going to be so many little items like barrels, carts, and such that I need to assemble it separately from this giant city.

There are still some empty spaces that I'd like to fill with something other than more homes, two of which I've marked to possibly add a statue of some hero or town founder, and another for a fountain or something else the people can enjoy. I honestly don't know what's going to fill the space near the castle yet though, so any ideas are welcomed.

Thanks as always for taking a look and for your ideas! Now I'm probably going to take a day off from 3D, watch Tangled (which I finally got today), and then make a gorgon for a future pic.

Thanks very much. I'm slowly working on the castle part now and making a lot of improvements.

I like what you have done with the place since the original in 2011. The river (lake? seacoast?) is a good addition. There was simply no way to move goods quickly and in large amounts other than water before railways. You could not support a town of this size without a river or large body of water. Also the town is less symmetrical. Real towns and castles tend to be far less symmetrical than fictional ones.

And yes you must put fortifications across the river.  If there is a bridge armies can cross it.

Thanks for the information. I worked on the castle itself a bit since this test, but not the city itself. It's kind of a big job that I haven't quite felt up to yet.     Thanks again!

You might want to add a church yard - with graves and things for the people that don't get filed in family tombs or under the church. Maybe some above ground tombs and such as well. Perfect for skulking around in

Also maybe a paupers town .. little shacks and shanties, suitable for beggars thieves and unsavory personages. Up against the walls, or outside the gates. One or two farms and livestock pens outside would also be a nice touch

Are the quays meant to be used by larger ships? if so than that gazebo thing might make it hard for large wagons to get by. you might want to skootch it out of the way.

The open area to the other side (without the church) would be a good place to stick some training equipment, and maybe tourney stands. And thinking of displays, do you have a theatre?

Is this world monothestic? should there be a temple as well?

SnowSultan In reply to Lyrra [2011-05-20 16:19:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I haven't done anything with that whole church area yet. Will add the graveyard, tomb (there's like 50 of them at DAZ, I probably have half of them, lol), and I'll try to make the church more of a temple (the world probably is monotheistic but I'm not going to make religion a big issue besides the Ryte being hypocritical followers of it).

A couple people have suggested a paupers town but I'm not sure what buildings to use for it. Will have to look around a little more. That's the problem with most of the good ideas I'm hearing, I don't have the props to do them well. Farms are good too, I'll probably add those to the east of the castle if necessary. Most of this will be background filler for renders in-town, so I might not make everything until it's necessary.

Thanks very much!

I have no other choice than to admire this concept. Your attention to detail is rather impressive. Here's a couple thoughts I have:

1. You should place farmland in the southwest corner. Just a couple farmhouses, wheat fields and a windmill should do well to add to the realism. If not there then around the castle walls to the east. Both places if you feel so inclined!
2. For the barren places around the castle, a stable and a barracks are a couple things to consider. You could also include a few manors to house the nobles and knights.
3. Decor is an absolute necessity in a city. It improves morale, so I think a fountain, a statue and a garden are excellent ideas. Those marked locations seem like ideal places to put them.
4. A shipyard might not be a bad idea either, though not necessary. A couple fishing boats in the water would be a nice touch, though.

I'll stop sharing thoughts for now! From this point on I'm going to watch your work to follow this project. ^.^ Enjoy the movie! I sure did.

Thank you very much for the ideas! Yes, I will add farms if any renders would show them (I don't want to spend too much time making areas that won't be seen) and there will be ships later. Glad to hear you agree on decor, I don't want things to look too boring. Will add lots of little stuff when it's time for a real render. It never seems to end with something this big, that's why I need a short break, haha.

Some greens areas around the castle outside the walls some of the housing, that always pop up in the security of the fortress,,

Thanks very much for taking a look. Yes, I would like to add a little greenery to the scene, maybe some potted plants near homes for a little detail and color.

This is really coming along good I think to the left of the castle you might want the barracks for the guard. I was going to say public gallows but they would have been in the market square in traditional times I think since they were a family event to go and see someone get hanged... Outside the main gates...I would probably make a roadway and have grass on both sides of the road. Could also be a place where traveling caravans might park during what ever to sell their stuff like a festival grounds if you want something...but since it's the main gates, I would think a roman like road leading to the main gates. As during sieges that would be where the enemy would park themselves to throw stones at the city. Since that is over water, have you thought about creating more of a mote around the city and the bridge is a draw bridge?

Did you render this is DAZ?

SnowSultan In reply to Nythande [2011-05-20 16:28:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for writing. Yeah, I do need to add the barracks and the training area, and that left area is a good place. I wasn't sure if those things would be within the castle area though. The caravans are a good idea, I'll think about that if I need to render outside the walls. There is a drawbridge where the long bridge connects, it's just hidden here.

Yes, rendered in DAZ Studio 3 using an Uberenvironment light with AO on (that's important for building detail). Thanks!

Barracks I kind of meant training grounds. I've played WoW and there are several towns where they have training grounds for the town troops outside the central building used to house the towns big gun, so that's what I meant about barracks, but I would think the "grunts" would be housed outside the castle and the officers would have quarters inside. Just a thought if you needed something to put in that corner.

Yeah, I've already built a training area but it's kind of small. Important to both Smacky's father and Eri though. Thanks very much!

Hmmm how bout some kind of hedge maze with a pool in the middle? Perhaps a mausoleum / cemetery behind the church? I don't see a stable specifically shown anywhere. Perhaps that would be something to put outside the main gates... tho I'm not sure how well that would be if they were under siege, so maybe have smaller stables in the lil areas around the two land gates. This is coming along so cool tho. I'm jealous of your patience

SnowSultan In reply to DesignsByEve [2011-05-20 16:25:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for writing. Yeah, there are two little stables in the secondary gates already but no main one. Wasn't quite sure where to put one, hehe. The church/temple area isn't made up at all yet, I'll probably get to that after my break. Thanks for the ideas!
