Description
Smacky's hometown won't actually be named after her, but she's an important part of it, and I want your ideas and suggestions to be part of her world as well. I've already received a lot of good advice on putting together a semi-realistic medieval city from DAZ members and from Faveral himself (who makes most of the good 3D medieval sets out there), and have built the rough city that you see here.Couple things to note so far:
- Building placement is not written in stone. There will be an additional smaller inn, a blacksmith, and additions to the church, and maybe more homes if I find that I have too much open space.
- There are no people or any small details yet (like barrels, carts, plants, wells, fountains, etc). I want to have all the buildings placed before putting any decorations so I don't have to rearrange them a million times. Not to worry though, I have a ton of assorted props that will be placed all over the city to make it more realistic and detailed.
- The ground plane is a custom creation by Lyrra that is subdivided into 9 parts each, and there are 9 planes in this example. This will allow me to create ground textures with paths, roads, and detailed terrain without using tiling or a single giant plane that would lose texture detail at this size. Again, I'll begin texturing them once I know where all of the buildings will go.
- The kingdom will be near a river that leads to the sea, so I plan on having a dock community nearby. My original plan was to have Smacky live in this smaller seaside area, but that may change as we finalize the city.
Many of the important places that Smacky will visit and have adventures in (including fighting the occasional monster or demoness) will be here, including a tavern, Molo's shop (where she gets weapons, SHOES!, etc), the training area (where the weapons master who raised her works), a marketplace (where all the little tents are), a mage's workshop, and so on.
This is all still a rough layout, so if you have any suggestions at all for what you'd like added, where stuff should go, or anything at all, please feel free to comment or send me a message. Visitor suggestions helped shape much of this city already and I hope the ideas of my friends and watchers here on dA can help personalize it even more.
If city planning isn't your thing, I'll be building the tavern interior soon and would like any of your ideas for three of it's regulars: the owner, the obligatory drunk, and a devoted Smacky fan always eager to hear of her latest adventures. The new tavern will also surely pique the interest of a certain elite demoness as well...
Thanks for viewing!

Thanks. This is very old though, I'm hoping to remake it in the future.

I keep looking to see if you added to this, and you never have. It is almost as if you realized people or more interested in sword wielding girls than stone work.

They are, haha. But I haven't added to it because I'm taking a break from 3D art for a while. I still have the file and would like to continue on it in the future. Thank you for checking in though and I'm sorry that I haven't had anything new to show.

Haha, thank you! That was a really early test that got lost, but I decided to work on smaller areas of the city now. There should be a few other pictures in my gallery. Thanks very much!

I'm eager to see the final draft of this town. Are you still working on it, by chance? I didn't see any other images of it in your gallery.

Thanks for taking a look! I haven't worked on it in a while because I realized that it makes much more sense to only build the parts that I'll actually use in scenes. Also seeing this [link] really made me rethink how I should make it (his stuff is amazing). I do plan on having some city scenes in the future, just not sure what or when yet. Thanks again, I appreciate it!

this is fantastic ~ brings me back to the days when I'd design pen&paper towns for RP (mine not quite as logically thought out as this, mind)
as mentioned, I think more congestion in some places will give the right feel;
for example, does the tavern need all that space leading to + around it~? I presume it's more for locals, and any travellers would head to the Inn.
It sounds like you've already got plans for expansion outside the walls.
The only other little thing I can think of right now, is to call the church a "temple", which might free you up on it's design & function - mostly cos Smacky reminds me of worlds like Hyboria ~ tho of course you may already have an amazing design for it already.

Thanks very much! Yes, I'm definitely going to try and fill it up with more stuff. I planned on a fountain area in front of the tavern, that's why there was extra space there. A lot of the layout may change though when I get back to working on it, I saw some great images on Medievalworlds.com that I'm going to use as reference. Thanks very much for the ideas, they're always appreciated!

I've had more than one person tell me that, but every 3D example I can find has them mostly lined up. Some of the home models actually come in rows, all neatly lined up. I'll try to mix them up a little more when I get back to working on this though. Thanks!

just an other idea, if possible twist radomly the various row axis,so they look less "parralle" to each other, giving a more "chaotic" feel to the whole town inside the wall,I will try to make a render to show what I have in mind in the following days

Actually having a town for the many projects is a godsend. I've had together my own out of freebie scraps. I can't enough reasonably priced Architecture!

Yeah, I need to try and use backgrounds more often and this has been good practice. If you're a DAZ Platinum Club member, there are a lot of good buildings for $1.99, otherwise you might want to check out this site: [link] Good fantasy and modern buildings there.

How about some guild houses? Guild of thieves? Guild of assassins? Guild of spice merchants?

I imagined places like that would be mingled within the other homes and buildings, but if they would be larger buildings, I will see what I can do. Thanks for the suggestion!

If it's a small town then guild houses need not be larger then ordinary homes.

It's not a huge city but it's not really small either. I will try to mix some larger buildings among the small ones and we can decide what they will be if they fit OK. Thanks!

aw thanks for the credits Snowy Your town is looking good - though I still think you have a lot of open space. You can probably squeeze in another ten or so buildings. And remember the churchyard (possibly outside the city) where the poor peeps get stashed. Rich sods get filed under the church or in tombs in the church. If you have a rich quarter remember the bordello in easy walking distance *heh*. And only one church? is your universe monotheistic? or can you add some temples to other dieties? not as if we have a shortage of poser temples thats for sure ... for that matter .. where does your clergy live?

SnowSultan In reply to Lyrra [2011-02-12 18:45:16 +0000 UTC]
Thanks very much. I had planned on adding a graveyard or whatever else I could find behind the church, but maybe a tomb would be more appropriate if only the rich are buried in town. A bordello is a good idea, maybe it can be that last house in the alley at the bottom against the wall for privacy.
Probably will only have one church here though, it's still fantasy and there can be other temples outside in the world. Maybe I'll add another building near the church for clergy though like you said.
Thanks very much for the suggestions and the ground plane.
