my contribution to DACipher 's 2011 grand release
It is not at all a custom of mine to publicly share work-in-progresses of work that is not yet complete. However in this instance I think that what went into one of the key elements in this piece makes for a good walkthrough, and with DACipher in mind, who are awesome, I thought "why not?"
Those of you who have followed my work here on dA for a few years or more might recognise this being a redux of an older piece :)
Again, this is a walkthrough, not a tutorial, and the only reason why I submitted this to Resources & Stock Images > Tutorials is because I can't find a more suitable place to put it
So thank you for viewing this, and happy 2011 to all of you!

I'll have to try the 300lb paper some time to feel out the difference I've made a New Years resolution though to paint only in oils in 2011, after I've finished this painting that is!

I really learned a lot from these walk throughs! I also have a personal preference for the crisp, soft and smooth and clean looks you achieve but being an amature would have never thought of some of the ways you acheive this effect. I am kind of excited about possibly trying some of your techniques! Thanks so much for sharing
! Your work is amazing as always!

thanks for the insights! I thought you were doing some airbrushing; great control of watercolor!!! Now, where can I pick up a bottle of "patience"?

It's great stuff I don't know if it can be used for other mediums, don't see how it could hurt acrylics, however it does wonders with watercolours

... my sister is into the whole One-Stroke technique made popular by Donna Dewberry who suggests her students use a "floating medium" when blending acrylics and I was wondering if this was basically the same stuff... does Ox Gall liquid change your water viscosity to thicker or thinner?

I have no idea, actually. I drank it once by accident and it tastes horrible does that tell you anything?
All I know is that... wait, I think the water feels just a tad bit slimier. Like... smoother if you run it between your fingers. It's such a slight difference that I doubt most people would notice.

According to Wikipedia:
"Ox gall is gall (or bile) usually obtained from cows that is mixed with alcohol and used as the wetting agent in marbling, engraving, lithography, and watercolor painting. It is a greenish-brown liquid mixture containing cholesterol, lecithin, taurocholic acid, and glycoholic acid."
... I would suggest not drinking it any more...

It looks like water to me and pretty much odourless. Then again it's CLARIFIED ox gall, or some shit.
It just tasted bitter >__>
But there, see. Lots of uses :D

It's always interesting to see how artists create their pieces and this isn't the exception. Your watercolor technique is quite elaborate I might say, and provides good results.
Happy new year to you too! (again)

Haha! I loooove turkey and we had it for New Year's Eve dinner. But since we don't eat much in my family, there's still a lot of leftovers in the fridge.
Why walkie talkies and not mobiles?
And yes, I am! I can't believe we'll be married so soon.

I LOVED turkey in Asia, oddly. It's only when I came here to the US that I tasted really really BAD turkey. Tastes like nothing.
Sigh.
WALKIE TALKIES because they produce that satisfying CRACKLE and you can say over-and-out. But... cats won't do that. So... idno. IT'S COOLER. So there.
Being married is awesome I wish you much happiness. And so wonderful to be married early in the New Year!!

alexandrasalas In reply to snowunmasked [2011-01-02 20:11:24 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, if we ever go to Asia someday, I'll make sure to have some turkey. Maybe our turkeys here in Costa Rica aren't the same as the ones in the US.
Haha! You're right about the crackling sounds and the over-and-out thing. It's just too cool. Now I want to get some walkie talkies for Liam and I.
Thank you dear! I thought it would be much better to get married in January than December. Less convoluted after the holidays and all that.

I'm pretty sure any turkey is better than the ones in the US.
YOU GUYS SHOULD SO get walkie talkies. It ought to be a married couples thing.

`DiegoTripodi and I like to argue about that one-- I LOVE the Ken Kesey novel it's based on, but I think Milos Foreman, in attempting to "find" the character of the Big Nurse turns her into a hassled bureaucrat who doesn't deserve one tenth of the abuse McMurphy heaps on her-- whereas, in the book, she's a castrating monster... I think Cool Hand Luke does everything the movie tries to, and with so much more style and grace...

snowunmasked In reply to SRaffa [2011-01-02 01:15:02 +0000 UTC]
I... love Milos Foreman's work
And it's interesting, it really did not go in ANY WAY that I had predicted. If anything I thought the nurse was a "good guy". Well I guess there's no real good guy or bad guy... she did kill Billy though THAT WOULD HAVE prompted me to leap on her and strangle her to all hell.

SRaffa In reply to snowunmasked [2011-01-02 21:11:32 +0000 UTC]
Meh-- it's one of my favorite novels, love-- I was gonna be tough to please on it no matter what the decisions were; it's a great cast and the performances are all commendable...
I think Foreman's Ragtime is really exceptional work, broadening and deepening even E.L. Doctorow's source material, and also reintroducing film audiences to the great Jimmy Cagney (one final time)...

snowunmasked In reply to SRaffa [2011-01-02 21:34:53 +0000 UTC]
Keith says the book is absolutely amazing, and that the nurse is pretty much a mirror image of McMurphy. Which is really cool.
I still think that what she did in the film TOTALLY warrants McMurphy's reaction. In fact the second I saw Billy laying there like that I was immediately prompted to do EXACTLY what McMurphy did, and my god was a satisfied.
Maybe I'm... just a really violent person >___> I've been punching things a lot.
Did you see that Larry Flynt movie?
