my contribution to DACipher 's 2011 grand release
It is not at all a custom of mine to publicly share work-in-progresses of work that is not yet complete. However in this instance I think that what went into one of the key elements in this piece makes for a good walkthrough, and with DACipher in mind, who are awesome, I thought "why not?"
Those of you who have followed my work here on dA for a few years or more might recognise this being a redux of an older piece :)
Again, this is a walkthrough, not a tutorial, and the only reason why I submitted this to Resources & Stock Images > Tutorials is because I can't find a more suitable place to put it
So thank you for viewing this, and happy 2011 to all of you!

Man, I just couldn't bring myself to do it-- Foreman was all coiled up to turn this redneck douche into some kind of first amendment hero while conveniently glossing over all the racist/misogynist stuff in Hustler just to make a point-- I'm not a Woody Harrelson fan, and so far, I think Ed Norton bears the same relationship to James Woods that Christian Slater bears to Jack Nicholson-- cheap, K-Mart copies of the original item in both cases, I think (but no one agrees with me )
Still, it's not fair to dismiss something I've never even sat down to-- what did you think of it?

LOL Christian Slater. What is the guy doing now? Is he still alive?
The introduction? SCARY. Seems like it's the kind of book that I CANNOT escape from.

NBC keeps casting Slater in tv shows-- the sad thing is, he's proven himself capable of doing good work in things like The Name of the Rose (eons ago) and a nice little role in Aaron Sorkin's excellent The West Wing series-- whereas Norton is always a pale carbon copy of James Woods (but I swear NO ONE's ever called him on it)...
What did you think of the Larry Flynt movie? Would you recommend it?

Fuuuck. I can't remember the last time I saw The Name of The Rose. Sean Connery ftw.
HE WAS IN THE WEST WING?
I... liked the Larry Flynt movie and I like Woody...
James Woods is so much more awesome than Norton.

I'll watch the Larry Flynt movie if you liked it...
Yah, he played a Navy lieutenant in it for like a three episode story arc, with almost zero Nicholsoning around!

You like 50% of the movies that I like.
Let's keep my fingers crossed.
I REALLY WANT WALKIE TALKIES.
omg this reminds me of how awesome James Woods was in Nixon.

Wow, I so agree with that-- as Haldeman-- really nuanced, subtle work...
I'm goin walkies NAO!!!
Woods is maybe at his best when he gets to articulate some of the rage that's always seething under the surface-- his best role may have been a made for HBO movie called Indictment-- he's totally fuckin mesmerizing in that...

What does quick and deliberate strokes mean?
Like what i would exactly love to see is video of you shading something with brushes
The result is outstanding

It just means to apply the colour fearlessly. Do it quickly, with just the right amount of pressure. It's all in the wrist. Just imagine yourself being extremely cool it works for me. Think "yeah, this is so awesome, being an artist is the best".
And we do have some videos of me painting however they're not as refined as I imagined. Would be GREAT to get a time-lapse video...

I found myself a shading technique for pencils etc but that's it
I freaking love painting so o bougt myself a grea tablet but i am still not familiar enough with it
And now you are posting this and i never realized that i can do such a things with regural brushes and acrylic color if i am right and you are using aclyric paint...
I will try it soon myself and i have to find the right tutorial to open my eyes about tablet

snowunmasked In reply to ViRPo [2011-01-01 21:07:03 +0000 UTC]
No, I mentioned on many occasions that I used watercolours not a fan of acrylics as it's kind of like painting with plastic, for me. Some people are amazing at it though, like ^sphilr and `kolaboy .

ViRPo In reply to snowunmasked [2011-01-02 00:18:50 +0000 UTC]
I was totally up to write watercolours because I felt like it should be what you are using but then I tought how hard it could be with watercolours so i guessed it was acrylic paint...
I should maybe bother about it a bit more
And I love how we get into a good talk anytime I comment one of your works/journals

Indeed I do use watercolours in a very unconventional way, it really isn't right lol I hope my methods are not misleading
I actually find it's easier to work in watercolours than acrylics, as acrylics dry even faster for me than watercolours
How about you? Have you worked in these mediums?

ViRPo In reply to snowunmasked [2011-01-02 11:39:37 +0000 UTC]
As I already said I always had my color pencils with me because i loved them and i managed to create my own technique of shading and drawing with them and i didn't really work much with other things
Even my teacher at school loved my drawings with pencils
Now i am looking forward to discover how to work with tablet in the best posible way

Colouring pencils are a lot of fun. I use them for spotting my watercolours, when they're nearly finished

OMG YESSSSS. The thing about you both, and Gillian, is that the physical process is also twisted up in the emotional and the thinking and the concepts behind the painting. It's why I can stare and stare at your paintings for ages, just trying to understand what was going through your heads a tiny little bit.
I'd pay good money to see what Keith's developing process looked like too.

snowunmasked In reply to synconi [2011-01-01 16:29:30 +0000 UTC]
Gillian is a whole lot more developed in the area of weaving in symbolism. I need to put more stuff in my paintings lol
Oh my god yes. Keith is trying really hard to get into digital... to no real avail. Also trying to do film, as in moving image, which I think he'd be AMAZING at but it's just one of those... "very expensive hobby" deals, if one wants to go all out and get really good gear.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
synconi In reply to snowunmasked [2011-01-01 16:39:01 +0000 UTC]
You're doing great- I can't handle all her symbolism yet. Just SO MUCH in every new work.
You guys have a film cam right? But yeah, it is HIDEOUSLY expensive. Worth it if you're going to invest your time and energy into it, and if it's what he wants to do though...
I've finally convinced the parental units to buy me a new lens, hopefully wide angle, but they're still stalling. It's a lot of money to get decent gear.

snowunmasked In reply to synconi [2011-01-01 16:49:37 +0000 UTC]
-sigh- you should see her work in person. It's just so much more... involving. Even her drawings are phenomenal.
Well we have like a little digital handheld video camera. It's great and all but really not professional. Keith loves filming though, he's really good and obviously he's a good photographer. We'll see. GIVE HIM ENCOURAGEMENT.
!! What lens?

synconi In reply to snowunmasked [2011-01-01 16:59:48 +0000 UTC]
God I'd love to see that...and yeah, her ink works are crazy. SO detailed and powerful. <3
Dude he should just go with it already. We all KNOW that he'll come out with something incredible.
I would -really- want the Canon lens- the EF-S 10-22mm. Parents would rather get the Sigma 10-20mm as an alternative (for half the price of the Canon).
Still unsure really, there are a few wide angle primes that I'm looking at, too. Guess I won't make up my mind until we go try them out tomorrow. Our Jessops store is awesome.

It amazes me that she has that patience for ink, and she's starting to apply that to watercolours, which is AWESOME. I'm glad she's taking more time now with her important work.
What other lenses do you have?
