Backstory

He was born and raised on Solstheim, in Raven Rock. He was a bit rebellious as a kid, he'd never listen to his parents when they tell him not to wander far away from the town. Like that, he'd explore the island with his siblings, sometimes going so far that he'd need few days to come back home, which always worried and angered his family.
At the age of 14, he got himself into a trouble for being at the wrong place in the wrong time, and ended up as one of the testing subjects of an illegal experiment. They brainwashed him, using multiple torture techniques and illusion magic, trying to make him believe to be of a Dwemer race.
After months and months, his mind cracked and he started genuinely believing in that. After being released (or running away) from the experiments, he traveled around Tamriel, researching the remainings of "his long lost race" and collecting knowledge on the Dwemer. In the end he came to Markarth in Skyrim, where he met Olive Monet and became her business partner, and thanks to her, he gained access to Calcelmo`s laboratory and researches.

He was born on the 1st of Sun`s Dusk 4E 159, in Raven Rock (Solstheim), and was given the name of Vallion Aradvani. His parents were immigrants from Morrowind, but he and his younger brother were born on Solstheim, and have never visited Morrowind.

He was a bit defiant as a kid, didn't listen to his parents when they told him not to play in the woods, as it was very dangerous. He was a dare-devil too, so his parents (mostly father) always had a little war, wanting him to stop being so reckless. But he still had a respect and love for his parents and they had a healthy relationship.

At the age of 14 (the year of 4E 173), while roaming around the forest on Solstheim alone, he encountered a mysterious hidden building. After sneaking in to investigate, he found out that somebody, unknown to him, was conflicting experiments on various kidnapped people. However, Vallion didn't manage to escape the building and inform someone about it, as he got caught and sent to an unknown location somewhere on Tamriel.

There, he experienced the same fate as the other people who were caught. In the experiments, they did various cruel brainwashing techniques - they would give him painful shocks, beat him, make him starve and not sleep, put him in cold, threaten that they'd hurt his family. They used a lot of illusion magic to alter his thoughts, then give him a treat like sweet food - all of that while telling him that everything he knows is a lie, and that he is actually a Dwemer. They forced him to study Dwemer science, magic, mechanics, philosophy, way of life, and would make him practice blacksmithing to no end, while any opposing to their teachings was heavily punished, yet other times they'd act friendly and gentle, telling him that he can go through it and that they are his saviours. He was slowly breaking down.

In the end, the brainwashing on him was successful. His mind was completely changed to believe that he was indeed a Dwemer, his memories shut down by his broken mind in an attempt to stay sane and partially blocked with illusion magic. And now, altered with new, made up memories which he took as absolute reality. He changed his name to Stholec Durmstratz.

As a new person, in the year of 4E 176, he suddenly found himself "free", waking in the middle of (to him) some unknown part of Tamriel. He ended up starting a new life by traveling around Tamriel, researching the Dwemer and trying to find out "what happened to his brothers" and basically devoting his life to it. In the end, he came and settled in Markarth in the year of 4E 198.

He was quite poor when he first came and couldn't afford buying or renting a home, so he ended up in the Warrens for a few months. He kept trying to gain access to the Dwemer museum, but Calcelmo always denied him. After some time, while working at Ghorza's forge to earn for a living, Stholec got renowned as a very good blacksmith around the city. Somewhere at that time, Olive Monet came back to Markarth and was searching for a blacksmith for her business. She heard of him, and proposed him a partnership, in which Stholec only wanted to get Calcelmo to allow him to go into the museum and his laboratory. As Olive`s father had quite an influence in the city, she arranged and convinced Calcelmo to do so.

In the end, Stholec got what he wanted to, and he is currently taking part in Calcelmo`s researches, while living with Olive and crafting different things that she enchants and sells.

 ***************

Personality

He is cheerful and easily gets excited over new research at Dwarven magic and science. He used to always be kind of cheerful and excitable, but these traits got even stronger after the experiments - he used cheerfulness to battle the pain inflicted on him.

He makes tons of good and bad jokes, innocent and gross ones, and doesn`t really notice if people don't laugh at them. In general, he is very bad at hiding his emotions. He takes on everything as cheerfully as possible, but when he does feel different, he won't be able to hide it. For example, if feeling sad, he'd make awkward jokes avoiding the topic and would give out forced smiles that are too obvious to be fake.

He is quite intelligent, has a great memory and an amazing concentration span - he is able to stay focused for hours and hours, forgetting about everything around him - from his surroundings, to his basic needs, and often the only way to make him notice you is to inflict strong physical pain on him (pinching his ears, which are quite sensitive, is the easiest way to do it). Even after his attention is drawn to something else, he keeps going back to the thing, and it's almost impossible to make him stop thinking about it. He also has weird moments of talking to himself (saying his thoughts out loud) when he's looking at a piece of metal he is working on, as if he's talking to the metal itself.

While he is very calm when focused, he can become really angry and violent if people continue to interrupt him. When angry, he subconsciously sets random objects around him on fire, especially candles.

He is blissfully oblivious to untold words, political games, lies and such around him (which is why he is a perfect companion to Olive, he suspects nothing). You can argue that he is naive - he doesn't even consider these things as existent, and thinks that everybody should be honest. But at the same time, he doesn't notice other people`s feelings very well either, often accidentally hurting them with his words.

With people who he spends more time with, instead of developing a friendship, he is more likely to develop a very submissive type of realtionship. He'd subconsciously start doing everything the other person asks him to, would avoid any kind of conflict and would not oppose them even if he strongly disagreed with them, also would be terrified of getting punished if he makes a mistake. It's usually followed by him feeling a huge anxiety and burden for no reason. Only a little bit of authority over him is enough to trigger this, so having someone who is completely equal to him to make a friend is hard to find. This started after the experiments conflicted on him, because that's what his relationship with the people experimenting was like.

 ***************

Skills & Powers

He has a "deeper connection" with metal. As long as it's made out of metal, he can do anything with it. As he'd say, "he politely asks metal to bend, and it does how he commands". He would sometimes really think of metal as his best friend and would have weird moments of talking to himself while looking at a piece of metal, as if he was talking to it.

He generally has a very deep knowledge of Dwarven science and mechanics and philosophy. He learned these skills "from his ancestors" (he actually researched it to the point of going insane, but he doesn't remember this happening). However, he doesn't know anything more than what is already known about the Dwemer, and despite believing to be of the Dwemer race, he likely doesn't know as much as the biggest experts on that matter.

On the other hand, he does know some magic. He is good in flame magic (a bit too destructive though), uses it as a help in smithing. He is good with restoration too, and always uses it in combat, but is rather useless with a weapon of any kind. He can make the finest sword, but he can barely wield it. He still carries a Dwarven sword when out exploring, because magic isn't always able to help him.

 ***************

Interests and everyday routines

Stholec spends most of his time working on something, be it taking part in Calcelmo`s researches or at home forging weapons and armour for Olive. He is very passionate about the Dwemer, although his love "for his kind" is often more of a crazy obsession than sincere love. He keeps trying to work on his projects and ideas and learn more about them. On the long run, his dream is to bring the Dwemer back, although this dream often changes with his explanation of what had happened to the Dwemer, so sometimes it ends up with him wanting to join the Dwemer wherever they had gone to instead of bringing them back to Nirn.

Because of what had happened to him, his mind always stays focused on that particular topic, making him almost unable to get interested in anything else. However, it is still possible to make him interested in other thing, just if you know the right way. When he's not working, he often visits the Silver-Blood Inn for a drink, especially when Frabbi gets the sujamma she specifically ordered for him.

Olive usually uses her father's caravans, but sometimes she sends Stholec to deliver an item to the customer who ordered it, so he travels around Skyrim from time to time. He doesn't like being kept away from his work for a long time, but he does enjoy changing the environment - and he secretly enters some Dwemer ruins on the way back.

 ***************

Explanations about his conviction of being a Dwemer

Stholec sincerely believes that he is a Dwemer, despite that obviously not being true. The memories of his real past he often avoids, eventually making himself forcefully forget them, although he gets flashbacks from time to time and is always confused as to what those places and people are. He doesn't remember even the experiments conducted on him, but certain things (like shock magic) can trigger memories from those moments, which leads to panic and fear. He doesn't know what he is scared of, but he gets terrified at those moments.

Even if he believes to be of a different race, the culture and race he grew up in is very much present in his behaviour, although he is unaware of it. For example, he often uses Dunmer honorifics, insults and slang, especially when not in control of his emotions. He also has an excessive love for sujamma, and would feel more comfortable when talking to a Dunmer than someone of a different race.

He obviously can't speak Dwemeris, but when asked about it, he changes the explanation for that every time, and doesn't even realize it. A similar thing happens when asked about his past in general. However, he uses some known words from Dwemeris, notably old names for places, like saying Nchuand-Zel instead of Markarth.

Relationships with other characters

Olive Monet

~ friend, roommate, co-worker, possible love interest ~

(an OC of mine)

His relationship with Olive started out as a work partenrship, but developed into friendship. They are quite open to each other, although they don't necessarily have to talk much when together. While Olive is essentially uninterested in his Dwemer machines and can find him quite annoying with it, and while Stholec is uninterested in anything that isn't Dwemer related and rarely pays attention to it, both of them enjoy doing their things near each other.

His part of their job is to craft numerous weapons, masks, shields, armour, jewellery and other items that Olive later enchants and sells. He is often lazy and instead works on his own unimportant projects, so Olive gets very angry at him from time to time. He tries to calm her down by starting a roast challenge, seeing who's going to get more insulted in the end. Needless to say, it never calms her down.

He tends to remember small and random details about her, even if he doesn't understand what they mean. Olive gets surprised by things that he can remember about her, and gets worried that he might find out her secret, but he actually quite rarely even thinks about any of those random details he memorizes about her.

It is unsure if he sees her as more than just a friend, because his actions sometimes look flirting and very gentleman like - way more than with other people, while other times like a brother-sister relationship. However he in general seems emotionally incapable of dating anyone.

Calcelmo

~ higher-up, research partner ~

(NPC in Skyrim)

At first, when Stholec first came to Markarth and wanted to gain access to the Dwemer museum and the excavations, Calcemo did not trust him, as seeing a guy who barely has enough money to eat definitely doesn't seem promising. Thanks to Olive who made her influential father recommend Stholec, Calcelmo took it into consideration, and decided to give him a test to prove his knowledge. The fact that he knew and understood the things Calcelmo asked him, as well as how Stholec crafted up a dwarven spider from a broken one without using any blueprints, convinced him that the guy has some worth.

Calcelmo might not be aware of it, but Stholec does subconsciously see him as his "master", which is why he does all the things Calcelmo asks, even those completely unrelated to the research. He is quite scared of Calcelmo.

At first, Calcelmo would get annoyed by Stholec`s claims of his Dwemer ancestry, but after a few months he realized that something really was wrong with the guy and that he truly believed in what he was saying. He never dug deeper into it, never cared about it.

Aicantar

~ friend, research partner ~

(NPC in Skyrim)

You could say that the two are friends - Stholec does see Aicantar as his best buddy, and thus likes to hang out and laugh a lot around him. Aicantar is annoyed by Stholec's sometimes forced cheerfulness, but he secretly enjoys doing the research with him and sharing their knowledge. Very often, when Aicantar feels bad about his uncle not caring for him, Stholec comforts him and makes fun of Calcelmo behind his back to make Aicantar brighten up.

His family

Stholec simply doesn't remember neither his parents nor brother, his mind avoids thinking about them. However, sometimes he'd get flashbacks or dreams about them, not knowing who those people are, and very soon forgetting he even had such visions. Deep down he feels longing to meet them again, even if he doesn't understand it

Around acquaintances and strangers

He doesn't take a lot of interest in other people, his head is usually thinking only about his works and plans after all. Well, unless they got anything Dwemer related to offer him - then his eyes are all on them. He doesn't make much difference between people of different races. As much as he doesn't pay attention to them, he might not even notice what race they are. However, even with his weird beliefs of being a Dwemer, he still feels more comfortable and open with the Dunmer.

Thanks!

Same, I love doing character sheets probably more than I should xD
This sheet is around a year old though, but this is the first time I am posting it here on dA. I posted another character yesterday too, and will probably post two more today or tomorrow, when I get time.
