Description
IntroductionAethos and all of its inhabitants operate based on these core evolution tiers. They are categories based on the scaling of power, ability, intelligence, and cultural aptitude. Demons which are smart enough to recognize the tier system abide to it strictly, with those below being controlled by those above. With enough resources and mutations, its possible for some demons to scale up into higher tiers, but demons already in these higher ranks will actively try and prevent this from occurring. Tiers come at a cost, however, as a more powerful demon is more difficult for a human to summon, eventually becoming impossible for a single person and turning into cult scale ceremony. This means the more powerful demons have drastically decreased chances of being summoned to Earth, so while being powerful aids their ability to survive in Aethos, it also lowers their chances of ever leaving.
Tier 6: Plantoids or "Plant Demons"
Plantoids are often static individuals, they still eat souls and the meat of other demons which happen to cross their path, but they are nothing short of vegetables. They do not think, they have no social aptitude, many of them can't even move. As a result it is impossible for them to have an affinity for social sins like pride, greed, envy, or lust. They are typically slothful or gluttonous, with a very low chance of wrath. They may have minor magical ability but will use it instinctually or without control usually as a passive effect. This is the hardest tier to climb out of because it requires developing a level of mental consciousness. They are the most plentiful type of demon, and the easiest for man to summon, however, most humans are not interested in summoning a Plantoid, so despite the ease of doing so, it still rarely occurs. Witches often summon these demons for experiments, potions, or magical practices, and higher level demons may often use them for similar purposes, though typically they are used for consumption.
Tier 5: Feral Demons
Feral demons have developed a consciousness, they can move and actively participate with other beings. However, they are not intelligent and rarely exhibit behavior more complicated than an average dog or cat. They may rarely exhibit some social behavior in the form of packs or pairs, but the connection is loose and underdeveloped, rarely being more than a mutual benefit or tolerance. Feral demons, like animals on earth, can have unique personalities and goals for their survival. Like the Plantoids, they are still incapable of most social sins. They have a much higher chance of getting affinities for wrath or gluttony, though they may also be slothful and in rare circumstances can accommodate a social affinity like lust or greed. They may have minor magical ability but will use it instinctually and without control or the ability to expand beyond what comes naturally. They are the most common earthly summon.
Tier 4: Lesser Demons
Lesser Demons have become sentient. Unlike Feral Demons, Lesser Demons have developed a sense of self and others. They may have more complicated personalities, social groups, and cultures, they can learn and hone stills with direction and intent. At Tier 4, the likely-hood of climbing up tiers increases, because the demon can actively plan and work towards it with their new-found awareness. They can have affinities for any sin, but are usually more generalized in the sins they target, instead they have a stronger focus on physical ability in order to keep themselves from dying in their particularly unstable and dangerous tier placement. Lesser demons are both predator and prey, and unlike the tiers below them, they recognize this ever-present danger. They may have magical abilities which they can hone, however as not-to-powerful creatures, their magical abilities are largely limited. Lesser demons are frequently taken as lackeys by more powerful demons or earthlings, because they can be reasoned with, they are easier to control than the tiers below them. At tier 4 a demon will start to make deals and contracts with earthlings.
Tier 3: Common Demons
Common Demons are the demons you typically find in lore all around the world. They are formidable foes capable of representing any affinity, with a decent grasp on magic and physical ability. Their intelligence may be more varied depending on the species and individual, though they will never have a lower intellect than a tier 4 demon. They are considered the average joe in demon society, they make deals with humans, and are typically a little more difficult to summon, usually requiring human sacrifice, but still frequently able to be summoned by one or a couple individuals. Because of their increased ability they are harder for earthlings or higher tiers to control, they are more stubborn, confident, and mentally developed than Lesser demons, often with an agenda that is more involved than simply staying alive. Many of them have the resources to begin to specialize their survival strategy.
Tier 2: Greater Demons
Greater Demons are ferocious foes, extremely powerful with a steep increase to magical ability. They can no longer be summoned by a single human and rely strictly on group summons to be taken to earth. Even while on earth they may be hunted down by angels and forcibly removed or destroyed before they can cause too much damage. To say they are difficult to control would be an understatement of their independence and abilities. They are the High-Class or aristocratical society in Aethos and form complex social networks cross-species, construct or at least plan out buildings and cities. In addition, they almost always have a legion of weaker demons. Many Greater demons are famously known on earth as "Princes" and at this stage of power their primary concern is owning sections of Aethos and ruling it under an Iron fist, or serving as right-hand demons to Tier 1 individuals if they are lucky. They are on average very intelligent and are quickly educated and learned to read and write.
Tier 1: Legendary Demons
Legendary Demons are extremely rare and even more rare to summon. It would take an entire city with a population of hundreds of thousands on earth to summon a demon like this, which would cause nothing short of an apocalyptical event that could end all life on earth. They are hyper-intelligent, specialized, and magical beings who's names go down in history books. Many of them have been alive longer than the earth has existed and to demon's below them their existence is often regarded as a myth in and of itself, with many demons claiming tier 1 does not actually exist. Most legendary demons are hibernating on the lowest plane of Aethos, waiting for something interesting to happen, while a small collective supervise Aethos from afar. They see no value in the tiers below them, at this point in their being, existence seems futile and their goal is not to survive or conquer but rather to watch others below them struggle to climb the hierarchy with great interest. They rarely interfere and above all else value entertainment. Rather than being referred to as legendary demons, these demons are usually mentioned by name directly, they are so rare that their population count is estimated to be within the mere hundreds.
