I've been meaning to put a new reference sheet together for my main OC Socks for ages now... the last one was done in 2014! Granted, I stole a few things from that one because Socks' color scheme and design really hasn't changed, nor has his overall personality. I just really wanted an updated ref for him. I kept the old drawing of him showing his spotted paw pads because, ancient as it is, I still think it's pretty cute. The pictures in the front along with the whole tree/rock 'frame' are brand new. I included both the digital and traditional colors. I mostly use Crayola pencils (fancy, I know) and the colors used for Socks are: gray, warm gray, brown, light brown, tan, peach, black and golden yellow. Pretty simple but fun to blend.

Anyways! Recently I saw an OC meme in a friend's journal and thought it looked kinda fun buuut didn't feel like filling out all the questions. So I'll just share some fun facts about my little derp instead. Feel free to read if you're so inclined.

Socks was first created way back in 1994 when I was nine years old; not long after The Lion King was released. That movie really kicked my creativity into high gear. At the time I didn't use the term "fursona" (I didn't even know what a "furry" was) and sometimes I still don't, but Socks quickly became my best imaginary friend and "animated" persona. He helped me get through school and daily life -- hell, he still does.

Originally Socks was a mixed breed dog named Rebel who was more or less a female (yes, he was a she back then) version of Dodger from Oliver & Company. Some time around 1999 Rebel transformed into a wolf pup (same name) then, during my "anime days", into a timber wolf named Akiko. Finally, in 2007-ish I combined his older designs (and my love for both dogs and wolves) into a wolfdog named Socks. That name, by the way, has nothing to do with actual socks. It comes from Two Socks, which is the name of the wolf in Dances with Wolves. You can see Socks' past variations here (old art): sta.sh/011jsbn2wzvv

Since Socks is such a personal character he shares several things in common with me, including:

Being aro-ace (aromantic-asexual)
Vegan (and has an addiction to kale)
Having an undeniable wanderlust
Being a major dork and hopeless daydreamer
Having anxiety and OCD (yes I have both; no they're not fun)

If I had to pick a "theme song" for Socks (which was one of the questions on that meme) I think "Unwell" by Matchbox 20 (www.youtube.com/watch?v=WziA88… ) and "The Way I Feel" by Keane (www.youtube.com/watch?v=n60shf… ) both fit him pretty well.

Through the last 25 years Socks has evolved and, likewise, so has his "in character" story. I've written bits and pieces here and there but am always changing things up and I'm unsure how much, if any, I'll ever get finished. In short he was born to a stray dog and a lone wolf. His mother, though I have given her a different name/look in the past, is basically an updated version of Rebel. I think it makes sense and is a nice little nod to his origins. Because of Socks' wanderlust he becomes separated from his family and is forever searching for them. Through the years he meets and develops friendships (and makes some enemies) with other characters like Suski the coyote, Pibz and Demon the pit bulls and eventually his story ties in with some of my friends' original characters like Sparkz the cat. In "current time" there's always an ongoing story between them but it's fun to explore the past, too.

Anthro Socks is kind of an alternate universe type thing, the character has always been primarily feral but occasionally I enjoy drawing him another way -- and so he can be an air pirate, haha. I suppose there are two "versions" of Socks: the universal character who can appear in any world or form and the "in character" one who is limited to the restrictions of his story. If that makes any sense -- and if not, oh well! What fun is there in making sense?
