1. Ump Lays An EggWriter: Erica Rothschild
Director: Marten Jonmark
Date: November 4, 2022
Synopsis: "Bog's pet lays an egg."
It's time for a little tender loving care (TLC). Let's see how this episode does it. The episode is about Bog's pet glypotaur Ump (voiced by Fred Tatasciore) laying an egg, which he's not cool with since he has to care for it. This episode gives a solid message on how you shouldn't be afraid to put in the effort to show that you care. Let's break this down.
First Half:
We start on a nice wholesome note with Eureka, Pepper, and Barry playing with their animal friends. They then run into Bog, who gives an interesting reaction. He's lying in a hammock and says that they spoil their pets too much. He sees booties on KB's feet, and Barry says how they use them as long hats during the winter. It's pretty cute to see them be like bros. Eureka says that they love them a lot and wait to make them happy, which is certainly true if you see them as best friends. However, Bog says that it's too much work for them. He says that Ump is easy to care for since he just sits still and cleans himself up and naps and grunts all day. He does care for Ump. However, he seems to operate under the mentality that pet owners should have distant relationships with their pets, and should care for themselves. For someone who's all about taking little risk, it's not really a surprise.
We then see Ump rolling around acting strangely. Bog initially thinks he's just being playful, but when hearing him not act calmly, he reluctantly checks things out. He sees that he laid an egg, which makes him scream in terror. I'm not kidding with that part. Ohm says how this is an exciting opportunity for Bog, but he's not cool with having the extra responsibility of being a caretaker. He is trying to weasel out of responsibility, but more because of the unfamiliarity and great chance to mess up. Ohm says that the egg needs a nice moss nest that's slightly damp, and Ump needs to sit on the egg to keep it warm. Ump needs to kept comfortable and well fed, and Bog isn't exactly cool with also having to love the egg. Case in point, when Eureka says they'll help him care for the egg, he thinks she'll be the caretaker instead of him. She is more open with her feelings, do you can understand his perspective in wanting to give the egg a better owner. Still, his pet laid the egg. He has to be the caretaker, but she's at least considerate enough to help him transition into it, especially since he can't think of anything caring to do. Barry suggests building a nest and Pepper thinks it should be called The Egg Shell. Teamwork makes the dream work. Eureka asks Bog what he thinks, but he and Ump are napping. At least he's still loyal to his pet, just through laziness. Everyone prepares the nest, and Eureka asks how Bog wants to help. He says they should put a picture of him in it, which Eureka says is a start, albeit very sarcastically. He's barely putting in the bare minimum, and even asks them to get more ice for him, but she says that the nest is done. At least he didn't go any further than that. She asks him to help lead Ump and the egg into the nest, but he's reluctant to do it himself, so she helps him.
Second Half:
She puts the egg in the nest, but he just asks for more drinks. Ump is making happy grunts when seeing his baby comfortable. It says something when the lounge animal shows more active compassion for his baby, but it's sweet to see him be proactive. She guides Bog to the nest so that he can touch it, and he feels warm inside. He actually feels a sense of compassion. It's not that he couldn't. It's that he would often suppress it so that he wouldn't be seen as weak. Now, he actually feels nice about it. He even sings about how great it is to be a dad in a song called "World's Best Dad". Now there is a sense of ego in how he hypes up his parenting skills as if he's the best. Still, he has a genuine sense of compassion with how he moves all around and spends time with him. If he feels strongly about something, he isn't afraid to show it. He's just feeling more positively now, which makes the song pretty sweet.
He holds a baby shower, and while he shows an ego for his dad skills, he becomes much nicer. Case in point, Barry gives him some booties for him and the egg, and he's shocked when he both tries it and thanks him. Eureka gives him a baby carrier, and she's surprised at how he appreciates that she made the gift. He's certainly become more mindful of others' well being, which is nice. Things then get haywire. He feejs exhausted and goes to relax, unaware of the egg rolling away. The egg goes to the waterfall, and he tells Eureka about this. We then get a short, but interesting reaction. He initially regrets showing care before Ump later finds the egg. It shows that he feels so strongly about something that he's willing to completely change for the better or worse. Fortunately, he embraces the egg and says that he'll take good care of him. The egg hatches, and he's excited to be a dad now. He names the egg Bump. That's a nice way to end the episode.
2. The Peace Of Pizza
Writer: Johnny Lazebnik
Director: Maeve Garvan
Date: November 4, 2022
Synopsis: "Eureka wants to share every pizza slice fairly."
When can you be too fair? Let's find out. This episode has Eureka wanting to make sure that every slice on a pizza pie is equal so as to make her friends. Things don't go as planned. This episode gives a very interesting message on fairness. It says how some things can't be made exactly fair. Know how to keep your priorities straight and see how your actions affect others. Let's break this down.
First Half:
We start with everyone talking about the long day they've had at school. Yeah school can be tiring no matter what happens. Per Barry's suggestion, they decide to go to Paleo's for pizza. Eureka asks KB to fly to Paleo's, and we later see that she made the pizza. Things don't go well from here. As Eureka tries to slice up the pizza, Bog says how they're unequal when both Pepper and Clod get bigger slices. He then says that they should all get equal sized slices (although he says his slice should be bigger). Yeah, he often tends to complain to the point of nitpicking. He would try to pick this apart. I mean, there's still ego in him wanting the bigger slice, but the rest of his logic isn't broken. Since Barry tries to avoid/lessen conflict, he says that they're almost the same size, and that it's impossible to make pizza slices perfectly equal sized. He's not trying to downplay anyone's efforts. He just wants to focus on what they have at hand. Of course, since Eureka is all about beating the impossible, she thinks of making a pizza cutter that makes each slice precise. She's at least considerate enough to make it with Pepper and Barry. She's all about thinking of the possibilities.
Everyone else says that it's already cut, so she tries to put on the charm and ask Roxy to make another pizza. We see that she's not exactly happy with this because if means more work than need be, but she doesn't get angry. She instead plays along slyly since she knows that Eureka learns things the hard way. Plus, she's smart enough to give the old pizza to Murphy since she was going to make him one anyway. Eureka is about to cut the pizza into six slices, but KB also wants one, so she adjusts the pizza cutter. It's still not good though, which leads to a Calypso/reggae song called "Making The Slices Equal". At least it sounds that way. Regardless, it's quite the bop and shows how the attempts to make things completely equal is tearing them apart. For example, Bog says that Ember's slice has more sauce and that Barry's slice is thicker and has more crust. Barry says isn't a big deal, but she decides to adjust and make them equal sized. There's a great sense of contrast in how the song is upbeat and lively, but the lyrics are about disharmony and confusion, not harmony and togetherness.
Second Half:
So it seems like things are better with the slices now being equal sized. Barry then asks if there are any toppings, which she forgot. At least he doesn't care about size, showing some open mindedness on his end. Still, he can sometimes make foolish decisions when not thinking clearly, or in this case, too much. They all go to the garden, and get toppings such as mushrooms, peppers, starfruit, spinach, and cocoa beans. Everyone then complains about some slices having more toppings (such as Bog not liking that Eureka's slice has more mushrooms and Pepper not liking that Ember's slice has more starfruit, which she didn't want anyway). Barry complains about them arguing. You can feel the tension in the air in how they're putting too much detail in everything going exactly as planned. Eureka is at her wit's end for trying too hard to make them equal, which Bog says is impossible. It's here where she does something unusual. She decides to use the slushie musher to make them perfectly equal and make pizza smoothies. Yeah that's just nasty, but it also highlights how desperate she's become. She just wants to get this over with. Everyone doesn't really like how it looks, and other than KB, they don't really like the taste either. Eureka sees that she didn't make anyone happy. They then see that trying too hard to make things equal, and that having a delicious pizza that's not equal is still better. They obsessed over the details and not the whole thing.
Eureka goes to her mother and says how no one ends up happy when trying too hard to make things completely equal. Roxy says how she isn't exactly happy making a third pizza, but Eureka says that she and Murphy will make this one. The way they say this is one of mutual respect. Roxy is willing to help Eureka with what she needs, but she needs to know how much she has to do and not exceed it. Eureka may have been blinded by ambition, but she's just as willing to fix things if others are obviously unhappy. She then makes a cheese pizza, but when she goes to get the pizza cutter, they say that she can cut it any size. Everyone enjoys the pizza as a result. Now this episode is one that's cooked to perfection.
