1. ShellebrationWriter: Sierra Katow
Director: Claire Lennon
Date: March 3, 2023
Synopsis: "Eureka gets a musical shell."
Here's an episode that can be described as rather hopeful even when it gets poignant. It's about Eureka trying to make a music from a shell last forever, but things keep going wrong. It sounds simple, but there's more to it than that. It actually gives a very well written message on how some things change, and we can't always stop it. Learn to embrace it and cherish the good times you have. Let's break this down.
First Half:
Things start out on a fun note with Eureka watching a game of Ptero Tap between Pepper and Barry. Suddenly, the literal snail mail comes by with a package for Eureka from Grandma Wanda's travels. She sent her a special seashell from Bronto Bubble Beach that makes very special music. I do like how we get a little postcard which shows some of it, making it feel like you're there. Seeing Eureka treasure something like this is also nice. She asks Barry to play some music on it with his drumsticks, and he agrees, making great music in the process. Pepper and Murphy blow into it, and they make different music that's also good. However, the fact that they did something differently and still made good music shows how there's more than one way to do something beautiful.
Eureka sees that there's so many ways to make great music, and thinks that she can invent something that can show off all kinds of music. Talk about expanding your horizons, but she is open to new ideas when seeing potential benefits. It's here where she creates the Shelledy Melody Maker. It's basically the shell surrounded by little gems on some kind of rotating pedestal and under a horn. That is certainly quite unique. We get the song "It's Wonderful", which talks about the wonders of music and being able to spread joy all over Rocky Falls to make everyone happy. This song definitely has a very upbeat vibe and sense of innocence as they dance to the music. We get a sense of unity and appreciation for the natural musical arts. It's definitely a sight to behold. The animals come in and dance along to the music, which adds to this. They plan to take this into town so that everyone can hear it. Specifically, she thinks of bringing this to Paleo, which is a smart idea. A little music can help brighten up any venue and bring in more people.
At Paleo, asks Roxy if she can play it, and she puts it on the counter. Eureka winds it up, and everyone dances to the music. Things seem to go well with everyone just cutting loose and having fun. A spike from the shell breaks off, and the music slows down a bit. Pepper, as laid-back as she is, says it's not much of a big deal since the music is still good. It's not that easy though. When it stops, Clod winds it up, and another spike falls. The music stops, and Eureka thinks that the spikes must be very delicate. Eureka says that she's going to check on the shell so that it won't break anymore if they play it again. Well, she's certainly not one to turn down a challenge. Roxy offers everyone dinoberry pie while they wait. At least she knows how to keep the peace for large crowds.
Second Half:
Eureka thinks she should wind it up gently, but another spike falls off. Pepper and Barry suggest using glooze, but the spikes don't stick. She then announces to everyone that she's going to stop playing the Melody Maker until further notice. This is a hard decision for her, but you can see why. She's too focused on trying to fix the problem and thinking that there's only one solution, fixing something that doesn't want to be fixed. At least she has a backup plan. She asks Murphy to make some music, and he just makes a bunch of trumpet sounds that don't sound that good. Well, at least she tried. She just rushed a solution. Bog tries to secretly wind it up again, but Pepper stops him. Clod tries winding it up, so Eureka puts it on a pedestal so no one can get to it. Yeah extra caution like this can work for kids that aren't tall enough. That doesn't apply to KB since he jumps up and plays it, accidentally breaking off more of the spikes. Barry says he wasn't supposed to do that, and he feels bad. At least he shows enough awareness of his actions to show regret.
Eureka then decides to put the Shelledy Melody Maker inside a cage so that no one can get to it. Yeah this is a little extreme. This is something meant to be played, not just something to look at. Pepper asks if she's certain about not playing it again since the shell isn't really fun when it's not making music. Eureka says to think of the shell's safety and that losing all of the spikes would be even worse. And then she'll eat her words. Even when no one touches it, another spike falls off, and she goes outside to vent her frustration. Yeah you can definitely understand this. She's trying to control something bad happens, yet can't see that there's nothing to stop something that seems inevitable. This fits with how she tries to fix things, but can't always see that everything and everyone does things differently. Roxy comes over to see how she's doing, and Eureka thinks she should hide it at home where no one can see it. Roxy thinks that maybe she should appreciate that some things change, making her slightly confused. We then get an interesting analogy involving shoes. She thinks that it's similar to someone getting new shoes, where you at first try too hard to not wear them so that they don't get dirty or worn down. Shoes will get worn down eventually, but the purpose of them is to wear them even when it happens. She says that losing spikes is similar to wearing shoes, where change is inevitable, and that's okay.
I know this is basically a wall of text, but I wanted to get it all in. This all goes to show that life is about embracing change and taking chances even when it's not easy. Playing the shell is the only way to enjoy its music. Eureka wonders what Grandma Wanda will think, and Roxy says she knows how everything good doesn't last forever. It's all about embracing the good that you have even if it doesn't last forever. The analogy of bringing up Wanda's trips also works since since she's always moving, and yet always comes back to Rocky Falls. Even still, there's still love between them. With everyone else gathered around her, Eureka plays the Shelledy Melody Maker, which they like More spikes fall off, and she notices how there are bumps where the spikes used to be. She gets the idea to make new music by putting the spikes on the gems. Although the music is different, it's still pleasant, and everyone dances to it. Now that's taking a problem and turning it into a solution. She changed the change to make something different yet equally satisfying. That ends the episode pretty well.
2. You Can't Twin Them All
Writer: Matt Eddy
Director: Fiona Ryan
Date: March 3, 2023
Synopsis: "Eureka makes something for the twins."
It's time for some twin magic. It's about Eureka wanting to make something special for Cypress and Spruce's birthday, but it doesn't go as planned. The episode gives a well written message on how you should see how everyone likes different things. Learn to embrace it. Let's break this down.
First Half:
It's painting time at school, and Ohm tells everyone to close their eyes, picture something, and paint it. This has some funny moments. Clod paints a turtle, Pepper paints a waffle fruit (well, she tries to anyway), and Barry paints a drum set. Cypress and Spruce (who wear yellow and green respectively) respectively paint a wagon and a dinosaur, and they combine it into a wheelasaurus (a dinosaur on wheels). The way they compliment each other on their individual ideas and their combined idea shows how they get along pretty well. However they're bummed out about the wheelasaurus only being in their imagination. Pepper and Barry talks about how amazing it would be to have something like this. Eureka thinks she can make the wheelasaurus for them since their birthday is this weekend. Given how generous she is in helping others out, this would be quite fitting. She also says that she's always up for a challenge despite how hard it is.
She tells Murphy she's making a wheelasaurus, and needs a frame for the dinosaur body, needs a soft layer, wheels, and a way to steer. Some time later, she shows off the wheelsaurus to Pepper and Barry, which they like. Her determination is certainly at 100 here. She says that she told Cypress and Spruce to come by this afternoon until she realizes something. They're twins, and yet she only made one for both of them to share. She says that she should make another wheelasaurus. According to her, it should be exactly the same since they're both twins and neither one should be better than the other one. She is being closed minded in thinking that twins should always have things be exactly the same. However, we see that she thinks they deserve something equally good, nothing more and nothing less. She just thinks that everything should be exactly the same in terms of presentation rather than quality. She makes another one, but this one has some differences, such as having more spikes and having purple horns. She thinks that the other would think that the one is better, and says that she should make more versions until they're completely identical. This then leads to a sing called "Inventing Your Inventions Twice". It's about about going above and beyond to make sure things are exactly right even when it's not easy. The song definitely shows Eureka's persistence and speed with how she's able to make many of them really fast and yet they all still look good. This shows how she can make quality inventions, but is too focused on a specific goal. Case in point, they're still different from each other, such as some having more feathers or spikes and some having green or purple heads, and that it isn't good enough. At least she says how when you have more than one friend, you should aim high and do what you can to please. Plus, the song is upbeat enough that you find her stubborn determination endearing.
Second Half:
She gets frustrated over making all of them different from each other since she usually doesn't have this much trouble. Barry thinks they should be able to come up with some kind of plan on how to share just one, which even Pepper agrees with. Eureka wonders why they're all different despite using the same building method. After some thinkering, she sees that she's using different parts, such as different kinds of bamboo. Yeah unwinding to think over your choices is normally a good thing. She's just too focused on what she thinks needs to be done in order to make people happy.
Eureka can't find anything, and Pepper finds rocks that look similar at a glance, but are different sizes. When Pepper thinks of squeezing it, Eureka thinks she can cut and carve it with an invention until they look exactly the same. She creates the Matchmaker, and puts sone sticks on the conveyor belt, and they look completely identical. So it looks like the problem is solved. If only that were the case. What Eureka is going to learn is that appearance doesn't always equate to quality. We get a reprise of "Inventing Your Inventions Twice" as she tries again and makes identical looking wheelasauruses. She and Pepper test them out. While they look the same, they don't ride the same since they respectively move slow and fast. Eureka is bummed out over not making identical looking wheelsauruses, and Barry says it's more important that she tried at all. I mean, she made a bunch of things in who knows how many hours. That's definitely effort worth acknowledging.
Cypress and Spruce come by, and she wants to hide the wheelasauruses. They come by, and she's sad over not having a gift for them, but they say how it's the thought that counts. The wheelasauruses roll out, and they like them despite how different they are. When she says how she tried to make them match perfectly since they're identical, they say how while they look alike, they like different things, such as Cypress liking pizza and Spruce liking star fruit. This is an outcome most can predict, yet it works well here. There's the emphasis on how she had the good intentions, but was too closed minded in thinking that looking alike means always liking the same things. She then asks if they would like wheelasauruses with different speeds, and Cypress and Spruce get the fast and slow ones respectively. At least this time she asked them instead of just assuming they'd like whatever she gave them. She gives the wheelasauruses to everyone, and we get a reprise of "Invent Your Invention Twice" as she learns to embrace what makes you different. That's a great way to end the episode.
