Description
I'll be holding a giveaway soon. Check out my latest post to see one of the artworks (yes I said one of) you might win: giveaway part 1Not that long ago I arranged a trade regarding nine artist trading cards (ATCs). They've now been sent to other artists all over the world and I'm really looking forward to receiving their small artworks.
These are the ATCs I've created and I hope their owners have gotten them by now. I decided to do them in a theme: half of them green, the other half blue and a "joker". All of them have a background related to nature and it's created using the negative painting technique. The animals are either black or black and white except the "joker".
I did it like this because I wanted to push myself into exploring new ways of using the negative painting technique and practise painting black and white animals.
I drew lots to decide which card would go to which artist - so it was completely random.
I might arrange a trade like this again sometime in the future?
Materials:
- Gouache
- Watercolor

I love these, they're so cute! Great work.
If you don't mind me asking, would you explain your "negative painting" technique? I ask because I tried getting that sort of layered look using masking fluid once and it was kind of a disaster, haha.

Thank you so much!
Of course I can!
You make a base with a light watercolor wash. Then you draw the outline of a shape (raindrop, cloud, leaves, etc.). Instead of painting inside the outline as you normally would you paint outside the outline. Paint with a little more paint/darker color on this next layer. Make sure your layer fades into the rest of the background about 2cm from your shape - depending on how big your painting is of course. Then you just repeat that: draw a shape and paint outside the lines with a darker shade. Between every layer make sure the last wash is completely dry. You may see on some of my paintings that I've been a little impatient and the contrast between the two layers isn't that prominent but the line blurs a little - you don't want that
I hope that helps
