Description Don't worry. I don't know what I'm doing either.

I got so many great art supplies for my birthday!

I'm still really confused with my art. I don't know where I want to go with it. It's mostly my painting and drawing that confuses me. I know I want to paint and draw animals, plants - just nature in general - but HOW I want to execute this is frustrating me a whole lot.

Materials:
- Paper
- Foam board
- Glue
- LED-lights
- Shadow box

Measurements:
- 25cm x 25cm x 4,5cm

The detail is stunning and wonderful job with the reflection!

We are all confused....and if we weren't we'd be stuck in a rut reproducing the same thing over and over again. Exploring and developing your skills is part of the journey and fun. At least that's what I keep telling myself. x)

That's what I'm afraid of too! I don't want to get bored and do the same thing over and over again - but at the same time I want my art to be recognisable. That middle-thing is tricky!

Just don't focus on pleasing others. Please yourself. Everyone else will follow.

That's so fricking true! I actually wrote something like that the other day: "My ultimate goal is to create art that evoke feelings and pieces that I am proud of. It is easy to get caught up in just making your art look pretty and trying to construct artworks that others like. I do sometimes get sidetracked but this is my ideal aim."

Awww so lovely ! It has a home feeling, where I imagine here a landscape with snow gently falling ^^
I like that you went onto different kind of vegetation. This is more humble but it gives this calm and peaceful ambiance

And about your art, I know the feeling of wanting many things but not knowing where to settle !
But I would say that you should keep trying everything that you desire. Maybe you'll find a way you really love, maybe you'll love many things. I think it's good to have a main way to do things but I see nothing wrong in spreading your art to other techniques ^^

sofierimmer In reply to JustineF-Illustrator [2017-04-17 13:39:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!  It's actually suppose to be a kind of winter landscape - which was a little tricky. How do you portray snow when everything is white and you can't make snowflakes?

I'm glad you're saying that! Because I haven't found "my style" yet. I don't know what makes my art mine. I know a couple of things - that I love incorporating animals and nature in my art and that I've never found humans very interesting to draw. I love art with humans in it but not creating it myself. But that's kind of that. I don't know what the next step is and that's really frustrating. I'm using my sketchbook these days to try some different things and I think that's good but everything is still kind of a blur.

My biggest problem is probably that I don't want to disappoint anyone. That probably sounds a little dumb. But what if I find out I don't want to use watercolors in my artworks anymore - what about all the watercolor supplies I've gotten for my birthday and christmas? I don't think that's the case but I don't know if that thought keeps me from really exploring art.

JustineF-Illustrator In reply to sofierimmer [2017-04-21 07:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh well yes, to me you did very well at portraying a winter landscape ^^ These little holes in the sky are making the difference to me. Add to that what you did with the nature of the landscape and the ambience and we're definitely there
It's true that it can be hard to see your own style (while others would see it much better than you !), and it can be really subtle, like something that can be found in the sensibility or in the way of approaching your subjects that would be totally yours But don't give up, it can be harder and longer for some people to find a style of their own. Some even say that they are constantly looking for it, during all their lives.
And I understand your last point. I truly relate actually. But try not to think about it this way. What you got for your birthday is a contribution of your family for the search of your style precisely. I'm sure they would understand if some day you go onto something else
In other words, I know that we artists are always wondering about everything that's defining us, but it's only normal and you will see that, even if it takes long, you will find what you're looking for and everyone, including you, will be proud ^^

Thank you so much for your great reply!

I love the way you view the whole art-supplies-as-gifts as a helping hand to find your style. That's actually the reason why I've given a new approach a go! So thank you so much

Sillageuse [2017-04-16 18:11:37 +0000 UTC]

beautiful, again!
What are you worrying about? The business aspect of making art? Or are you looking for a "purpose"? If it's the latter, how about using your art to turn attention to environmental issues like pollution, climate change and threatened species? I think that can fill you with a feeling of purpose, maybe ^^

sofierimmer In reply to Sillageuse [2017-04-17 13:27:24 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much!

It's actually more that I don't know what to aim for anymore. I've always seen other artists and said "oh they're amazing I want to be able to do something like that" or "that's a cool way to use that media - I want to get the same feel to my art". Right now I don't know what my goal is. I know I'm no where near where I want to be with my art but where "that" is... I have no idea anymore. It just makes creating kind of hard too.

Sillageuse In reply to sofierimmer [2017-04-17 13:36:56 +0000 UTC]

Maybe that's a sign that you've come toe to toe with your favourite artists  Maybe try to expand by looking at other forms of art, like comics or video games or music and think about what you like in those and whether you can get the same feeling in your artworks? At least it's what I read as advice if lacking inspiration: look at different fields. Now I know your situation isn't about lacking inspiration, but maybe it can help too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sofierimmer In reply to Sillageuse [2017-04-17 13:52:11 +0000 UTC]

YES! That might help! THANK YOU! Now that you say it - I feel like my train of thought has gotten a little "boring" compared to what it usually is. Not that I'm not inspired but that my mind isn't as imaginative. I might get that back by reading some more books or listening to some new music. It's definitely worth a shot!

Glad if I could help Maybe make a poll and let people suggest totally non-mainstream music etc., so you can get out of the filter bubble

And thanks so much for the watch, that's so kind of you!
