Description
Don't worry - I don't know what I'm doing either.I've been a bit confused about my art lately. For the past year, year and a half, I've felt like I knew what kind of art I wanted to create. I might not have been able to paint as well as I wanted but I've felt like I knew where I wanted to go. Lately I don't feel like I have any idea about where I want to go anymore.
These are some small quick studies of the master Kazuo Oga - the amazing artist who has painted the backgrounds for Hayao Miyazaki's movies. I'm practising mixing and combining colors. I just love his paintings and hopefully I might pick up a trick or two.
I really want to go outside and do my own nature paintings but I feel like studying his work first might be the way to go. Maybe that's where I want to go with my art - painting magical and beautiful nature paintings? I don't know - maybe.
Materials:
- Watercolor
- Gouache
Getting to Know ColorsHello there - whoever might stumble across my profile!
I want to get to know colors better. I love colors! But I have to face it - I probably get a little too excited when I use them
Lately I've tried to either: use colors for the background and then black and white for my animals - or use black and white for the background and colors for my animals. It works better than overwhelming everything with too many colors - but I still feel like I'm not quite there with my color combinations.
That's why I've decided to try and really focus on the colors. First I'll start small. I heard somewhere someone say that beginners often choose too many colors too quickly and then they get overwhelmed. I think that's been my problem. So now I'm going to focus on only one color at the time. I'll try to really get to know the individual color. How I can blend them into different shades without just using black or wh

There was an artist somewhere that did something similar (Actually I think this is common practice for any artist so don't worry)
It's fantastic to do little "doodles" or practices like this. And I'm excited you are spreading your wings out and trying different things.. It will in the end teach you things and allow you to explore your colours. Something I should also do... although every painting you do will also allow this.
I really love the perspective on the powerline one! awesome shades as well.
Did you do this mixing your blue with like one other colour and finding different tints/temperatures? Nice work.
Sofie, we all hit those road-blocks in our art... not knowing where to go or what to do with it... feeling uninspired, feeling unmotivated.. I find looking at art, any and all art, photographs, explore your surroundings, imagine things you see drawn/painted, maybe reading books, quotes, using them as inspiration to concoct imagery... anything really.

I think almost every artist out there is inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's work somehow - and I really do understand why! I think I kind of got to the same thought. That I want to explore my colors but mainly focusing on that kind of took the spirit out of it.
Yes I did! I didn't go crazy and mix 5 different colors together. Mainly just 2 colors and adding more of one or the other to see how it transformed.
I do think I've finally found a way around that road-block and one thing that certainly helps me is to listen to audiobooks while painting!

Yeeees ! That one on the top left corner is super, super great !! ^^
You start to get the thing You can do pretty much every color out of for instance blue. It won't necessarily mean that you're painting a "world" that is blue only but a landscape with a blue ambiance. As if we were at night for instance ^^ We can clearly feel that in your study.
Keep getting inspiration from masters then ! For sure it should help

Thank you!
It's definitely the one I spent the most time on. After I finished it I felt like doing some quicker and more simple studies
I'm soooo happy to hear that you think I'm starting to get it! I feel like I'm snailing my way there - sort of One of the things that really has astonished me while working with blue is: mixing a blue with a brown and creating a beautiful greyish blue - I would never have thought it could change into that!
Thank you yet again for the support in my journey!

Yes, blue and brown can create some fantastic shades ^^
And you can use this mix later on with "multi-coloured" paintings, to create shadows for instance
And you're very welcome !!

These are wonderful I must say that painting among nature, especially now in spring with all these blooming flowers, is a particularly nice experience, I tried it recently for the first time and I wasn't dissapointed. There was no worrying about whether I would make the drawing perfect so it felt really relaxing and enjoyable. I hope you get to try it soon, and don't forget to enjoy it!
