Description My digital ink over the Late and Great John Buscema.  Original here www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPi…

Help!  I can't stop.  Found this "Buscema does Frazetta" type piece by John Buscema and just had to ink it over.  It's penciled and inked by John Buscema.  More detailed and varied in texture than what I expect of his work, but not as much as Frazetta.  The rendering is just what's necessary to make a sober, if aesthetically pleasing, statement - no unnecessary, or self-indulgent riffing to revel in the intoxicating feel the brush strokes.  LOL.  And it's neat, but not overly tight.  In fact, I'd call it loose, since the manner of rendering suggests details without actually drawing them in.  The details are suggested with patterns.

Didn't take long, did it?  Maybe because I feel an affinity for Buscema's rendering technique.  It's direct and well organized, so easy to predict.  What it comes down to is thinking clearly to begin with so that the method and expression follow suit.

This shows one pass, which is the limit of my patience and interest.  Sure, it would be good to go through it two or more times dicking over this and that to balance tones, heavy up the spots and tinker with line weight and, god forbid, details.  But is that really going to improve my drawing?  Or just make me a better copycat?  (Well probably both. ) But I'm not doing this to forge Buscemas or to become an real inker.  I'm doing it to get the mind set of a master so that I can incline my natural tendencies in his direction.  The payoff comes when I render my own pencils and they look GOOD.  So, little by little.  This is, after all, an exercise, not an end in itself.

BTW- on that first pass I couldn't restrain the impulse to make a teensy-weensy change of which Big John would surely approve, in principle.  I offset the shadow on the girl's neck because it formed a tangent with the jaw that flattened out space.  It's no big thing and just goes to show that some habits (critical observation) should NEVER go away, because no one is above correction.  No one.

High praise, Sir!
If I had respected my limits at the time I'd have waited a month or two to tackle it.  At the time I did it, it wow-ed me.  Now I'm just happy I had the balls to use it for practice, like the Frazetta pieces.  They stretched me and gave me confidence, and who can gripe about that?

Dude!  Long time.  Thanks very much.  All I did was ink over his work, though.  It's not as if I did it from scratch. Digital technology makes everything too easy. LOL.

Thanks.  Hehe.  Be careful what you wish for!

Life's been a bitch.  Just getting back into a daily exercise routine after I was mauled by a rottweiler in September.  Got my legs while I was bicycling and ripped the flesh from the bone.  Otherwise, pretty good.  Got back strength in my legs after they were paralyzed in 2016 from a spinal injury.  Went back to martial arts for four months over the summer in which time I got strong enough to replace the cane with a leg brace.  By August I was strong enough to start cycling hills, again.  It was going good until the dog attacked me.  Had to stop everything.  This week I went back to exercising.  We'll see how far I can press forward.  I'd like to get strong enough to get rid of this knee brace,  Details in the weekly journals.  (From April 7 to end of July I didn't do any artwork, just BJJ.  So, it was a martial arts blog.  Some good videos, if you're into it.)

How about you?

Dang. Seems like a stressful situation. Specially when things just started to get better. As far as my situation. I got laid off- my wife's brother was killed for hanging out with the wrong crowd- and I'm still not working my dream job...hahaha. But I guess its the way life goes. In a positive note. I got inspired to work on my art craft again.

Yes.  Often it seems as if life is a cruel test.  The beauty of being an artist, or writer, is that on one side it provides good material and on the other it provides the free time to work with it creatively.  So, win-win if you play that positive note for all it's worth!  Haha.

Of course it's of no consolation when one suffers the loss of a loved one.  I'm sure you're a great comfort to your wife, so be grateful that circumstance, as unpleasant as it is, enables you to be there for her.

Yes- that is true. Hopefully things balance out. But if they do not . At least art can be an escape.

And one man's escape can become reality for others.  (Or, their escape as well.)  I guess the nice thing is that while it seems to last forever, it doesn't.  I appreciate that, now.  Life is precious.

My first impression, before I open the image, was that Conan was were this nice lady is, and Captain América was the dude whit the shield.

Probably my bias. I remmember a story were the Cimerian goes to sec. XX, always imagined why they did that instead the opposite. Obviously in our time Conan could only be some sort of crime lord, much more interesting and hard to predict would be the destiny of Steve Rogers or Peter Parker (but not Logan, to him would be just too easy) fighting both Picts and civilized Aquilonians.

But that is the image I saw before I actually see the real image here. The real image here is gorgeous. Specially the big cat.

Haha.
John Buscema modelled his style after that of MichelAngelo - though his tiger looks more like something drawn by Rubens.  (BTW - I linked Buscema's original in artist's comments.)

Thanks! I appreciate it.

I had to use some digital tricks to prop it up - for example, duplicating the layers to make weak lines stronger.  Also, framed it with a heavy border to keep it contained so the parts could relate to each other better than in my first "finished" version.

I agree.  It stands on its own two legs.  There are some rough spots, but I'm not about to polish them. Every time I look at them they'll rub me the wrong way.  So, then, next time, I won't make the same mistakes.  Haha.

Thanks- probably will lose something when I remove the blue line and show just my lines.  LOL.  But this way you can see what I'm working on.  I think "Buscema does Frazetta" describes it well.  And I think Buscema's relative simplicity trumps Frazetta's gratuitous complexity as it concerns my patience and skill level.  haha.

I'd like to see that, Grant.  You can grab it at Comic Art Fans. If you go to the directory of artists you'll see JB listed right at the top.  Click his name to generate a showing of all his artwork on the site.  Or simply input the title in the search engine.

(P.s.  I think you replied to your own comment, this time.  Haha.)

dont stay on any artist that feels comfortable.
keep switching it up and pushing out of that  comfort zones.
AND, when it feels Uncomfortable, stop taking short cuts, and skimping on detail.  Take a deep breath stay focused, and push through it, keeping it consistent.

This is the Advice I can never follow my self, but I understand it.
