Description Ah, Bretheur the Brave! This was for sure one of my very first, and most beloved, characters of all time.
A powerful Sindar Elf warrior from Middle Earth, he was the first incarnation on one of my favorite archetypes: the kind-hearted, fair and noble, yet sad hero. In my gaming group of the time - which still gathers to play today - we coined an idiom for that: "the hero who remains aloof against the dying sun, the mantle fluttering in the wind". He was the very first Sad Hero - totally awesome in the composed behaviour with which he endured his personal tragedies. Of course Bretheur had all the possible cliches on him: he lost his true love, kidnapped by the Evil Sorcerer, only to later know her dead, and being not able to join her even in death, though he yearned it above all else, because he was sworn to help his companions in their quest until the end...
Anyhow: for this remake I tried to maintain the original look and outfit of the character, with the cuir bouilli armor and elegant elven spear and teardrop shield (which was later introduced in other illustrations). I am pretty happy how it turned out, I think the look upon his face captures the character's feelings well, and I like the sketchy quality of the image, didn't want to refine it more but preferred to leave it sort of unfinished, like it was something out of a dream, or an epic ballad...

He's awfully big and muscled for an elf. Do you intend this?

He's a Tolkien elf. Well over 7' tall and powerfully built as you can read in The Silmarillion and other fiction.
Elves in Tokien where of the Norse type: powerful superhuman creatures akin to demigods. Not the fey-type of celtic tradition that many games (D&D above all) mediated.
Plus, he's got a chestplate with fake muscles! He may be tall and wide but not so heavily muscled like this beneath the cloack, armor and loose clothes!

Oh, that's true. We're so used to emo elfs now that some of us (ME) forget they used to be like gods.
