Description
Today's post is about another one of my favourite characters: Garth (aka Garthamir Aethelmar).Garth was a character I played during my MERP/Rolemaster/Middle Earth days. He was a Half-Dunedain/Half-Noldor Elf of gigantic frame and immense strenght.
He was trained as a Noble Warrior (a sort of Paladin, using mental discipline instead of divine magic) to become the guardian of the White Tower of Echtelion in Minas Anor (later Minas Tirith) during the Second Age, when the Faithful Dunedain had recently founded the Realms of Exile of Gondor, Cardolan and Eriador. At that time mixed marriages between Men and Elves were less uncommon (yet still very uncommon - but not completely unheard of) and Garth was the offspring of the union between a guard captain of Gondor and a fair Elven maiden. He was raised to protect and serve but at some time fell secretely in love with a scheming and deceitful young spy named Minathariel that bribed him in letting her past his guard into the secret rooms of the Kings. She stole some documents, and the heart and honor of Garth with them. He swore to expiate his guilt by voluntarily exiling himself in the still wild and unconquered lands of the North. There he sought adventure and glory and had his epiphany, promising himself one day to come back to his homeland to show himself again worthy of the task he had failed and the honor he had broken. And, he never stopped also looking for the beautiful Mina who had stolen his heart...
Retrospectively, Garth was quite a flat character, full of stereotypes, yet I liked his appearance and concept a lot.
He wielded the magical battle staff Unadamarth ("Inescapable Fate" in Sindarin, the tongue of Elves) and his elven fine features made a stark contrast with his mannish, powerfully muscled frame. He was a real giant, standing way over 7' tall, and possessed a prodigious strenght, but was also kind-hearted and had a somewhat naive attitude.
For this redesign, I tried keeping the look of the character largely unchanged. I still gave him his signature weapon and the unpractical breastplate with fake muscles over real muscles and the cloack. I tried to improved his face to make him look more elven than he previously looked. I'm pretty happy with the powerful hieratic pose, too. Hope you like this one as well!
