Description
A scribe is seen in her dwelling, a cigarette in one hand and a pen in the other. She lives in an academic building known as an “Adhii’litaatxe’lyn,” which literally translates to “writing house.” It gets this name from those who inhabit the building, those being the scribes. The scribes are tasked with recording and transcribing information into journals, notes and books. The most common books a scribe is likely to transcribe are the holy books of their respective nation's religion, with scientific and artistic literature being secondary.
The Adhii’litaatxe’lyn itself is a decently large building, capable of holding around four hundred scribes. They are often found in large cities. Such institutions are built around a private out-door library, where books and writings of all kinds are kept, such as scriptures, encyclopedias, holy books, philosophical books, scientific and artistic literature, important documents and other such things. The library, to protect the books and documents it possesses, is fitted with a glass ceiling, which ensures rain cannot break through and ruin the writings.
The Adhii’litaatxe’lyn serves as both a place of residence and a place of work, and the scribes who dwell in the building are paid to be there, however they must pay back a certain amount for the cost of their dwelling, tools and literary lessons. They must also pay for their own food, and it isn’t uncommon to see scribes in the local area searching through the market stalls to find some food.
Like with most professions of such nature, scribes are all females, with no males being allowed to become scribes. When a female becomes a scribe, she must turn in her red robe and hat for a red shirt and cloth hat.
Inside the halls of the Adhii'litaatxe'lyn are the dwellings where scribes live. Dwellings are small and fit for one person, with their small room containing a desk, chair/bed and closet. Each room has two windows. But aside from being a place to live, a scribe may also take books to her dwelling to work in peace. However, many scribes tend to work in one of the two chambers at the side of the Adhii’litaatxe’lyn, where they work in peace as they quietly write and transcribe in the company of other scribes.
Because of their profession, Scribes are among the most literate of all the population, and often spend many months learning the grammar of their language and how their script works. In addition, scribes have some of the best handwriting, and scribes will spend a lot of time learning how to write as clearly as possible.
The common tools of the Shrith scribe are her pen and inkwell. The pen is made up of a very thin, hollowed-out wooden shaft where ink is stored. The ink in the pen itself is harvested from bivalve-like creatures who squirt ink out when they feel threatened. The ink of these creatures is mixed with another substance that thickens it enough so that it’s not super leaky or runny. But anyway, the pen must be held at a specific angle to ensure the ink does not accidentally leak out. When the pen is out of ink, a scribe will take a small inkwell and will carefully pour ink back into the pen, giving it a good shake before using it once more.
