Description
I USE A TABLETI don't know if this will be possible without it so I'm disclaiming now before anything happens. O.o
I'm sure that if you tried you could do this without a mouse but I have no idea.
Anyway...
This is just a simple tutorial that I created because someone asked me how I draw rocks and nature things.
It's a bit bland maybe.. but it gets the idea across I hope. O_O

Thanks for making this. I always have trouble getting the color of moss right. Now I have no problems and can start doing more "outdoorsy" drawings.

Awesome! *3* I'm so impatient with painting on the comp... now maybe I'll be more patient, seeing the steps like this. XD; Your rocks look re~ally cool. You win at nature colors, too.

I'm really happy with this tutorial. I'm horrible for getting lazy on backgrounds. It's one reason why I did this tutorial... so I'd be more apt to do proper backgrounds. >.<

Thanks! I suck at backgrounds, and avoid them as often as possible.. But I guess I'll have to try my hand at one some time soon.

I LOVE YOU!
No..seriously. I've been wanting a tutorial on this for a LONG time..
Wonderful job, really.. It's actually pretty easy, just from the images, to see what you did.

That makes me happy knowing that you understood the tutorial. ^^ I was sort of worried that it may have been a bit incomprehensible because it's not really in point form... just notes.

*nod* Of course, I am somewhat experianced with photoshop by now.. so I don't know how good it would be for a complete beginner, but for someone who's had it a while, and knows all the controls.. shouldn't be any problem. Now I feel an urge to paint a forest just..dripping with moss, or somewhat.. The cool, creepy kind that hangs from trees..
*plods off*

This is a very good tutorial and yes you can peform these techniques with just a mouse.
It just takes a bit more time, so you need not worry.

I had no idea if you could or not. o.O I haven't tried with a mouse because I actually don't have a mouse. ^_^ I use my pen and tablet for day-to-day usage along with sketching.

ParabolicPhoton In reply to Sotalean [2006-01-27 03:03:41 +0000 UTC]
I've had to use my tablet for day to day use from a while back. I use a wireless mouse and the charging base it gets put into when I'm done with it wasn't properly charging it. During that time, it wasn't reliable enough to use, it kept fading in and out. So my tablet became my newest best friend for navigation, until I solved the problem.
The tablet pen just gives more immediate control over denisty and size and such for the techniques you discussed in your tutorial.
All that a mouse user would have to do would be to take an additional few steps, of changing opacity and brush size and perhaps using the smudge tool, to achieve similar results.

Hmm.. I guess so. *shrugs*
But I'm honestly dense when it comes to coloring with a mouse.. I'm not good at it at all. O_o

no bother, it's not like you need to figure it out.
You're quite excellent with the use of the tablet pen. I say stick with that.
