This is the MK-I immersion PC I built for a university project. I had problems with the second hand hardware and had to scratch together some ancient hardware. At the time of writing it is running a quad core processor and 8800GTS video card. As pictured it is using a crusty old PIII LOL!
OS: Ubuntu Karmic Koala on an 8Gb USB stick, with XBMC installed for media duties. Media is stored on a remote portable drive.
Works well and am working on MKII at the moment. Yeah I know it looks like garbage but it was a rush job for uni.

With the right oil level, it's 100% silent! The operating system is on a USB thumb drive so no hard drive ramp-up noise or anything.
There's easier and cheaper media systems now (namely the Western Digital media system) but they are nowhere near as cool or interesting I think

Pure silence is worth the extra alone, the neat factor is a bonus.
Have you tested how hot the oil gets? I've heard these things can actually trap heat during really long runs.

Yes, the final version will run an oil cooler, I just haven't had the time to finish it as yet. Without the cooler it sits at 43 deg C all day except for the middle of summer where it will get up to 50 and trip an alarm after a couple of hours. With the cooler it should happily sit at a few degrees above ambient all day long.

Is it going to be a passive cooler to maintain the zero noise pollution? If so, that is going to be one awesome box.

it'll use an aquarium pump submerged in the oil to circulate it. Beacuse it doesn't need to pump onto the surface water for aeration like a fish tank it should still be dead quiet.
when I'm back from holidays I'll be able to finish it!

It's a medical oil called Ondina15. It has a high flash point and good electrical properties.
