I am sad. This fact is shown clearly on my face.

I hate it when people cannot spell correctly.

Actually, "that" is still grammatically correct, as it refers to that statement, as in "I like that statement."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BleedLikeAGod In reply to GaioumonBatou [2010-10-01 13:07:07 +0000 UTC]

No, it requires a noun. "This" and "that" by themselves in that context are incorrect.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

mbrsart In reply to BleedLikeAGod [2010-10-01 22:40:02 +0000 UTC]

It's actually an understood noun. For instance, the sentence, "Go home," is complete because the subject is understood. The same is true for "I like this," or "I like that." The subject is "I" and the object is understood.

BleedLikeAGod In reply to mbrsart [2010-10-01 23:37:23 +0000 UTC]

The object must be present for the statement to be grammatically correct. Commands do not require a subject.

GaioumonBatou In reply to BleedLikeAGod [2010-10-01 17:38:10 +0000 UTC]

The subject noun was supplied in the form of the deviation itself, so the use of "that" as a demonstrative pronoun is still perfectly correct, grammatically.

BleedLikeAGod In reply to GaioumonBatou [2010-10-01 18:14:36 +0000 UTC]

No, the noun must be present in the sentence for it to be completely grammatically correct. I am going traditional on this one. I also removed all contractions.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GaioumonBatou In reply to BleedLikeAGod [2010-10-01 20:02:49 +0000 UTC]

Traditional is relative to (and therefore dependent on) context. If the noun has already been stated, it doesn't need to be referred to again, pronouns can be used in the noun's place. As the deviation itself is the start of the conversation (hence, commenting on the devation [also hence, commenting on it ]), the pronoun can be used in place of the noun itself.

BleedLikeAGod In reply to GaioumonBatou [2010-10-01 20:04:01 +0000 UTC]

The noun was not stated by the speaker. It is still not grammatically correct.

👍: 0 ⏩: 3

GaioumonBatou In reply to BleedLikeAGod [2010-10-01 23:29:20 +0000 UTC]

The noun doesn't have to be stated by the speaker. In the context of the work the comment is posted on, the pronoun can refer to the image itself, or the text on the image. There's not room for confusion. It's grammatically fine.

BleedLikeAGod In reply to GaioumonBatou [2010-10-01 23:39:43 +0000 UTC]

I disagree. It has occurred to me, however, that we may both be correct. We may have simply learned two different styles of English.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GaioumonBatou In reply to BleedLikeAGod [2010-10-01 23:55:20 +0000 UTC]

That is possible. In American English, the regular use of pronouns is pretty common. If you're from Jamaica like your page says, then I'd imagine the influence would be British English?

BleedLikeAGod In reply to GaioumonBatou [2010-10-01 23:57:48 +0000 UTC]

Wow, for some reason my post submitted while I was still typing.

Yes. For instance, I imagine that I would correct anyone who does not use an Oxford comma, but you might not.

GaioumonBatou In reply to BleedLikeAGod [2010-10-02 00:05:22 +0000 UTC]

I would, but that's because I love the Oxford comma. It's not standard here, though, so yeah, I'd imagine that's a teaching discrepancy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BleedLikeAGod In reply to GaioumonBatou [2010-10-02 00:07:51 +0000 UTC]

That is awesome! The Oxford comma is the one true comma rule. Screw Associated Press style.
