hahaha! yeah, five.... six? years ago when i posted this, i was anyhow. i was always getting caught up in the next pro- or anti-this-or-that happening on here.

i only ever heard good things about gimp; never had any extensive experience with it on my own machine though. you'll probably really dig that program i knew a lot of artists who had their own grain/style and their work looked real good.

Gimp for life, god damn it. >;Y

I legitimately don't understand the fascination with photoshop. I really don't. I actually have tried it myself, and I utterly despised it. If other people can use it well, that's awesome. More power to them. For me personally, I'll stick with my tried and true Gimp.

Old stamp or not, calm down with the rage o__О.

You can not "fuck" these programs (Photoshop and Painter), because they are the best. Yes, I'm aware amazing art can be made with these programs you "wouldn't fuck"- but Photoshop (mainly it) offer far more variation and are in general... Almost better in every aspect.

Still not an excuse for shitty art, but seriously.

photoshop has quite a FEW features missing that, for instance, SAI has xD I go along with it anyway :I Im still pissed it doesn't have a curve tool for outlining though x'D
Too bad SAI doesn't work on Mac. :U

well that brings up the question, "why in fuck do ya have a mac!" why not cut your legs off and go around in a shiny, candy-buttoned wheelchair! that's what apple is, a wheelchair, of a computer. sure they have a universe of products all their own design that look real spiffy, but everything is so expensive and you can't do any service yourself (unless you're REALLY loaded) and all of the iconic devices they make are compatible with PC. only YOU can't use THEIR stuff, 'cuz you have a mac!

...was it a gift? i'd understand if it was a gift.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

That-Dodo In reply to sparkpenguin [2012-11-30 05:26:50 +0000 UTC]

Ha, no. No, actually, it wasn't a gift. xD It came to be because our PC photoshop file derped out and died on us, leaving us with a useless apple photoshop version. That was one of the reasons. The other reason to buy it is because it had a big screen, comfortable for drawing digitally.
And no, I don't give a shit for their fancy settings. They can go to hell for all i care, together with their endless design/program competition against PC. People get nothing but shit out of that.

Photoshop ain't all fuckery by the way. Sure, blending colors in is an absolute nightmare, but those filters are useful once in a while.

sparkpenguin In reply to That-Dodo [2012-12-03 03:08:34 +0000 UTC]

i got.... so many filters and functions and whatnots in my PSP! XD i don't hate photoshop for lack of functionality i hate how standardized the art that comes out of it appears to me. everyone reading the same tuts. drawing the same material. ho hum.

and yeah, the macs have such huuuuge screens, i'm like DAYUM! i draw really small though so... my small tablet and ordinary screen work fine for me.

That-Dodo In reply to sparkpenguin [2012-12-03 05:29:54 +0000 UTC]

I think it has about the same as photoshop heh. xD We had it at first. But it went up in flames about 2 years ago as well.
Damn right. Not much difference in the art, is there? :I There are exceptions, lots of great artists use it, but so many of them draw the same thing over and over again.

Yep, huge screens. But the shortcut keys are a real pain to get used to, after working with a PC my entire life.

I do like Photoshop, but lately I've been using GIMP more. I feel the tools for making lineart in GIMP are easier to understand and use than in Photoshop. Plus the program is more lightweight in comparison. Yes Photoshop has more options than GIMP, but I don't really need them. At this point, I wouldn't really care too much if I lost Photoshop; GIMP satisfies my needs just fine.

sparkpenguin In reply to Bluedramon [2012-07-03 05:37:33 +0000 UTC]

i prefer PSP to PS for a similar reason. it's a much more intuitive design, even though somehow the program handles so much more in terms of media and functions. PS is klunky and weird by comparison.

i also find a lot of the artwork i see coming out of PS looks the same. people blame everyone reading the same tuts but i'm not sure i buy that.

got nothing against GIMP, i've known a lot of really awesome artists who swear by it.

Bluedramon In reply to sparkpenguin [2012-07-03 11:53:22 +0000 UTC]

I've tried using PSP once years ago, but couldn't understand it. But then again, I didn't really put any effort into learning it; I kinda gave up quickly. I might give the program a chance someday to see if I like it. I heard it was a good program. I actually knew of it before I heard of PS.

sparkpenguin In reply to Bluedramon [2012-07-04 05:24:32 +0000 UTC]

i have 9; it's really easily laid out, you play with something once and "oh it does this." if you're not familiar with a certain arena of tools then it can seem monstrous, because it does so much. but if you know what you want to do, or take a moment trying things out, it's... superprogram. give it a shot again!

Bluedramon In reply to sparkpenguin [2012-07-04 23:01:44 +0000 UTC]

One thing I like about it better than Photoshop so far: the fact that it's $50 instead of $700.

I'll see about downloading a trial sometime. A friend of mine loves Paintshop Pro. He may be able to help me with it.

photoshop is cost-inflated by the fact that it's forced down art students' throats. they've GOT the professional industry, so they can charge what they want.
"but if they were making that much money on it then wouldn't it be cheaper you're so stupid you photoshop hating person!"
anyone who says this, does not understand that something popular is going to cost more because your silly little ass wants it so much more! XD

I use Photoshop sometimes, but I agree with the stamp statement in sort of a way... PS was supposed to be a program that does "everything" instead of PS user, but as we all know, software which "will do everything for you, FUCKYEAH!" is big, fat lie
When I want to paint something digital I usually use Paint Tool Sai which was supposed to be, from the very beggining, a painting software and is more user friendly than almighty Photoshop

And btw, Photoshop CS5 sucks even more

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sparkpenguin In reply to slania [2011-03-14 05:46:25 +0000 UTC]

everything i see made with PTS looks good. and that's the only real unifying thing about it-- a lot of PS work looks the same mimicked style. but that's artists, not the program... donno where i was goin with that.

and really that bad? that's depressing to me somehow!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

slania In reply to sparkpenguin [2011-03-14 22:40:48 +0000 UTC]

well, I took my first steps with Photoshop 7, a really old one, where you needed to do everything manually. CS5 is so 'awesome' that it does everything instead of you which means no fun which you get from creating process... maybe I'm complaining without a reason, but to me it's crappy.

tools are there for you to use to do things. a lot of Photoshop (CS, Painter, Illustrator) features do a great deal of the work for you. a pencil doesn't auto-correct its lines in real life.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

FatalSyndrome In reply to sparkpenguin [2011-04-18 21:49:14 +0000 UTC]

Er, not to interject on a random comment but.. Photoshop does not autocorrect. Illustrator might as it is a vector program but not Photoshop.

Photoshop CS is just another version of Photoshop.

Painter belongs to Corel and it's literally digital paint, no "cheating" or anything.

When I work in photoshop for my own personal art I use it as strictly a painting tool. It allows me to make what I want to make without the mess of painting. I love painting but in my little house I just don't have the room to do it. So photoshop just helps me create. Yes photoshop can also auto correct but it can't make a painting for you.

sparkpenguin In reply to ArtRepresentsLife [2010-06-23 04:08:19 +0000 UTC]

the basic gripe i have with photoshop is that it's too cushy. i know it can't think and draw for you. but a lot of people can't do that for themselves; a lot of art that comes out of Adobe products are made under instruction of a few tutorials by artiosts who want something to look a popular style. that's my beef. it's the artists, as much as the program itself. in your situation (lol i did go and case your artwork) it's not the kind of thing that bugs me. you're not a cookie-cutter artist, and i can't assume you use all the lameass "training wheels" functions the program features.

oh, one more thing... really important... i DO use a digital program, a really really great one that is more powerful than anything Adobe ever put out (which is why they eventually bought them out to ice the competition) called Paintshop Pro. so i'm not barring the use of art programs in favor of traditional media, please don't take this that way.

just a greedy, monopolizing company that creates sub-par programs that nurture typically sub-par art.

ArtRepresentsLife In reply to sparkpenguin [2010-06-24 18:42:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh I agree with you on the fact that Adobe is all in it for the money. They always end up crushing the smaller photomanipulation companies and charge as much as they want for there software because of it. Adobe however is the "number one" for most graphic designers for the fact that you can open any adobe file no matter what kind of file it is in any other Adobe software besides Photoshop. Then again we aren't talkig about real graphic designers we're talking about as you put 'cookie cutter' artists that just easyly edit anything and call it art. I suppose one has to think of it as a double edge sword. If you know photoshop well enough that you can make your own art without the need of over editing with 'training wheel' functions then that's fantastic. I think its just the fact that to use Adobe products to there fullest you need training and some people just don't have that sort of training.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sparkpenguin In reply to ArtRepresentsLife [2010-06-25 06:18:54 +0000 UTC]

PSP can open any Adobe file also; it's not about functionability for Adobe, it's about having a stranglehold on the graphics education AND professional graphics industries (while holding hands with Apple who has the monopoly on public schools in my state.) sure it's #1; because it says it is, and schools and institutions gobble it up to stay competitively similar. which is a business thing-- not an art thing at all.

well ...see you kinda just did something thati hate MOST about Photoshop. it's not a verb for "using a computer to make or enhance art." it's just one relatively limited program that is way too embedded in the institution.

i am actually a vector artist. i start with pencil and paper and finish in Paint Shop Pro.

remember: a pencil is no less a tool than my computer is, so.... i guess... nyeh to your comment lol.
