Description This is Tango-class submarine B-515, which served from 1976 until her retirement from the Russian Navy North Sea Fleet in 2001. She somehow made it to Hamburg, Germany, where she is now a museum sub to educate about Cold War espionage and submarine warfare. However, she also carries the number U-434, and my only guess why she carries this is that it honours the original U-boat that was sunk in on her first patrol in 1941.

It's amazing sub, the underwater warrior of the Cold War.

Kind of odd that she (or rather he, as the Russians like to refer to their vessels) carries that hull number.

Yes, I really have no idea why they have done this, though maybe it is some sort of memorial to the U-boat with the same number. Honestly I have no idea.

That was an interesting boat to visit, what did you think of it?

I've been on American and British submarines but the Soviet designs are different. Those small round hatches, while making it easier to quickly secure a flooding compartment, seemed like they would impede quick movement aboard the boat and be a pain in the ass on a day to day basis.

Well the Submarine is very interesting, to say the least! I understand your point, but the Soviets were not usually the type of people to grant lots of comfort in anything really, so I can see why they wanted to use as much as possible. After coming from the U-boat up in Bremerhaven it was a bit of a step up, though!

I noticed that about them. It's almost like they go out of their way to remind people how unimportant they are to the machine. The T-34 tank is the same way for tankers.

Yes, nothing but the bare essentials I suppose!
